To not leave the house when wfh?

museumum · 21/11/2024 18:47

Am I unreasonable to not get outside at this time of year?
I feel like it’s not healthy. But I’m struggling to go for a walk or run in the dark.
what do you do if you wfh and children old enough to take themselves to and from school.

1hr lunch - throw on trainers and coat for 30/40min walk, then home to eat a pre prepared lunch. I have a few well timed routes but also have flexibility so could finish lunch if I stop to chat etc.

I only get half an hour.

MidnightMeltdown · 22/11/2024 00:34

I try to get out for a run a couple of times a week when wfh, but I wouldn't just go out and walk around if I didn't have anywhere specific to go. Mainly because I would resent using the time when I could be doing something more productive during my breaks (like housework).

The day I would rather do housework than go out for a walk then you might as well shoot me! I would spend the time resenting the fact that I was doing housework instead of something far more interesting (like going for a walk).

Goodness! I wouldn't deal with this well!

It's funny to think there are people out there who would enjoy house arrest. Takes all sorts, I suppose!

I once did 22 days straight not going out it was bliss. I'm on holiday this week and went out to Sainsbury's yesterday other than that indoors for ten days. I love being home

Sounds perfect

Namechangeforthis88 · 22/11/2024 07:26

I can enjoy the odd lazy day, but regular exercise now is an investment in your long term health prospects.

Massive rise in strokes in people in their fifties in recent times.

You need weight bearing exercise to keep your bones strong and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

With some of the perils of aging, by the time it hits you, it's too late to make a big difference to the outcome.

EmpressaurusKitty · 22/11/2024 08:20

Following my gym workout I’m sitting in the coffee shop, & I’ll be home & ready to start work for 9.

All good, and at the moment I often get to admire the moon & assorted stars during my walk in.

pumpkinpillow · 21/11/2024 23:43

YANBU to do whatever you want, but it's not clear whether you actually want to go out or not.

You recognise that it's not very healthy to get any fresh air and exercise all day.

I sometimes don't go out during the day (maybe to the local shop), but I do exercise most evenings. I don't mind heading out for a run with my head torch though and love a walk around the fields in the dark with my music.

In the summer yes but I absolutely refute the idea that this week's fresh air (two degrees, sets off both my Raynaud's and my crap sinuses something awful as well as just being miserably uncomfortable) does anything positive for either my physical or mental health. If I had a treadmill I would happily do all my exercise indoors in the winter.

xILikeJamx · 22/11/2024 08:25

Go for a walk at lunch time

DancingLions · 22/11/2024 08:36

I can stay home for days, I love it. I have a treadmill that I use daily while watching an episode of something. Also do some yoga. I sleep with my window wide open all night, year round (joys of peri), so I figure I'm getting plenty of "fresh air" while I'm sleeping. But I also have a garden that needs a fair bit of maintenance so I'll be out there some days.

I do think you need to do some form of exercise though. There are at home options.

Fair enough. I don't know if I have Raynaud's but I certainly get that corpse finger thing. Once it's started it's hard to stop, so when I go out I make sure I am warm before I leave the house. It's usually OK when I'm running, but if it's really cold it'll kick in when I get back home. I don't get it badly, just the white fingers and tingling, no pain so whatever it is, it's not that problematic.
Exercise for me is way more than the physical aspect. I'm fortunate I can get outside because I know I wouldn't do it if I had to do it from home.

@Em1ly2023 Mine is the WalkingPad Z1 I think. I really like it, it works well, it's pretty quiet and it has an app that links with your step data and stuff.

Brilliant, thanks so much :)

To be honest the sinuses are worse. Running while your sinuses are trying to prevent you breathing is awful. Trying to blow your nose with Raynaud's fingers adds an extra layer of awful. I miss my summer runs!

Holy crap, that's my idea of hell.
I'm only home long enough to eat and sleep each eve!

Yeah.....I can see that. I don't suffer with sinus problems but it sound very uncomfortable.

You still have to go out. It's not meant to be fun but you need daylight and activity. Get a litter picker or something.
I walk to the supermarket before work on my WFH days and again for an errand at the end of the day. Sometimes a little run.

I don’t have to do anything. I go out when I want to or if I need to go somewhere. If there’s a day where it turns out I’m wfh and don’t need to leave in the evening, then I won’t. As pointed out, no amount of UK daylight at this time of year is actually doing anything beneficial for anyone. I enjoy going out at the weekends. Though that said, sometimes they’re TOO hectic, so after a few busy weekends I like a chilled Saturday or Sunday at home 😍

I think it also depends where you live. If you live in a city in a flat, or if you’re in a small, dark house then I can see why it’s depressing to stay in. I lived in London for a couple of years in a flat and it’s not a good quality of life.

All the rest of my life I’ve lived by the sea, currently in a reasonable sized semi 200m from the beach. So I get plenty of fresh air and seaside waking simply by living where I do. I don’t have to go out there every single day.

Reugny · 22/11/2024 11:52

Singleandproud · 21/11/2024 20:13

@Reugny in the rain being blown by the icy wind off the North Sea? You betcha - I have no wish to go back to work wet and bedraggled even if at home.

I wear different clothes to work in and to go for walks in/exercise in.

Reugny · 22/11/2024 11:52

Me too. I tend to put on workout clothes in the morning with a decent long sleeve top for any online meeting. Takes no time to change when home later.

IjustbelieveinMe · 22/11/2024 11:58

I am out for a walk 3 times a day, once in the morning before work, once at lunch and once after work. I try to get at least 12000
steps in.

Mirabai · 22/11/2024 19:42

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/11/2024 22:44

@Mirabai I think it depends what you have access to at home
I have a peloton bike, resistance bands, adjustable weights that go pretty heavy (a few sets), yoga blocks, a push up board. Plus the peloton classes so weights, cardio, spin and all the programmes plus the power zone challenges etc

I'm not slim but never have been but happily do a 60-90 min spin class

Sorry that was a typo my post was supposed to say I wonder how people who are not exercising at home stay fit and slim.

I have a treadmill at home so it’s perfectly possible to do plenty of exercise indoors. Although I still want to get out of it for some fresh air. I’d take that any day over gym equipment which is really only for when it’s bucketing down.

ThinWomansBrain · 22/11/2024 19:47

I rent a hot desk office space when WFH - all of 800 steps to get there, so unless I go for additional walks not great on the exercise front, but I like the community, I'm more focussed on work than I would be at home and I don't have to fight the cat for access to my laptop.

I’d rather use the weights at the gym than have to store them in my flat, & I usually meet at least one person I know there to chat to, plus quite possibly bumping into someone on the walk there or back.

Freda999 · 22/11/2024 20:13

I WFH today. Finished at 3.30pm. Have had a terrible cough/cold thing for the past week or so and today has been the first day I've felt up to a proper walk.
Wrapped up warm, dog has his light up collar. Over the farmers fields and watched the changing colours in the sky. Dog loving having a good run and sniff. Listened to the crows and was lucky enough to spot a family of 4 deer, watched them for ages until they passed through.
Better than any medicine. Please enjoy my crap deer photo.

To not leave the house when wfh?

I do get sinus problems. Horrible. Imagine someone kicking a pair of glasses into your face.

Currently have sinus problems along with a runny nose.

notedbiscuits · 22/11/2024 22:28

Only got 2kg dumbbells which don't take much room at all. I have a gap between drawers and wall, they slip in there.
