Am I unreasonable to not get outside at this time of year?
I feel like it’s not healthy. But I’m struggling to go for a walk or run in the dark.
what do you do if you wfh and children old enough to take themselves to and from school.

There are walking exercises on YT.

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/11/2024 21:12

@MiddleAgedDread because it's cold, dark, miserable and I have a lot of fatigue so need to get up as late as possible

I exercise after work as I'm more of a night owl so finish work then go on the peloton or lift weights before cooking etc

Washingupdone · 21/11/2024 21:13

It’s not good for anyone mentally nor physically if they don’t walk every day for at least half an hour. If you don’t use it you lose it.

Why does it have to be walking though? Low impact cardio at home, spinning, step... all get your HR up and are weight bearing

Lovemycat2023 · 21/11/2024 21:15

I make myself leave for a 20 min walk round the block, even if that’s after work in the dark. I’ve been borrowing audio books to listen to. It’s tough though and if it was very wet and windy I would struggle.

ChiaraRimini · 21/11/2024 21:24

I had 30 years of adult life getting up early to commute/do the school run, during many of those years I was absolutely knackered. So now I can work from home, I don't give a stuff if I don't leave the house all day!

whydoieven · 21/11/2024 21:32

Thank you @notedbiscuits. I have seen them before. I would love one but it's bit unaffordable , unfortunately.

SlugsWon · 21/11/2024 18:59

Don't you wind up feeling sluggish and rubbish if you don't get some fresh air and exercise each day?

Nope not at all. I have to get out for a long run twice a week but today was a rest day and it was absolute bliss not going out into 2 degree temperatures at any point.

The best thing about WFH is not having to leave the house in unreasonable weather.

AngryBookworm · 21/11/2024 21:37

I try to get outside in my lunch break just to be outside in the daylight (and if I go for a run I might need a bit more than an hour, which I can make up for by working late - I know not everyone can do that). But if it doesn't affect you it's not morally wrong not to go outside! There are home workouts and things you can do, or cleaning to get your heart rate up - it is good to do something physical and get out of the chair for a little bit.

GreenMarigold · 21/11/2024 21:37

I go for a 30 min walk before work and then another 45 min walk on my
lunch break or in the evening. With general moving around the house as well that gets me to around 10k steps most days.

I go even it is pouring with rain as I know I feel better for it.

TheChosenTwo · 21/11/2024 21:38

I’d really like a walking pad for my desk at home but I don’t think I’d be able to type and walk at the same time, I could definitely see disasters occurring 😂
And for the most part I am typing or dealing with intricate data. I don’t often have meetings that I’m doing nothing in, I’m usually presenting - I just don’t see one in my future which is quite sad as I’m not very good at sitting still so I bought myself a standing desk and it’s sort of helpful but I would love to be doing something with my legs!

This might be true if you don't do any other exercise but if you have a decent weekly fitness routine, a day of doing nothing will do no harm at all.

You certainly don't need to leave the house - on days I don't run I do resistance work at home.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 21/11/2024 21:40

Try to get out for a walk before work and/or go swimming at night

doodleschnoodle · 21/11/2024 21:42

@Em1ly2023 Mine is the WalkingPad Z1 I think. I really like it, it works well, it's pretty quiet and it has an app that links with your step data and stuff.

Hedjwitch · 21/11/2024 21:44

Walking is boring, unless a proper country hike.

A 30 minute forced plod round the local streets in the pissing rain or cold is utterly tedious and just makes me miserable.

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/11/2024 21:15

I’m not against that. OP gave the impression that they were doing nothing really physical.

doodleschnoodle · 21/11/2024 21:46

I can type fine on the 2.5 speed setting, but it's trickier with the faster ones. I save the faster speeds for reading stuff or meetings where I don't need my camera on Grin

I always go out in the daylight, every day. I'd be worried about a slippery slope towards agoraphobia, amongst other things.

Agoraphobia isn’t developed from staying indoors too long, so don’t worry about that. It’s more of a panic disorder that stems from traumatic events.

ForGreyKoala · 21/11/2024 20:23

This. I leave my flat every day, unless the weather is really bad, or I'm sick. I would go stark raving mad if I stayed at home all day every day. Fresh air and exercise are necessary for everyone - whether they believe that or not.

I must say I had never realised so many people loved staying at home all the time until I got onto MN.

Yes it's odd
Staying inside all the time? Weird.

muckandmerriment · 21/11/2024 21:54

Every day I'm WFH I go for a 5k walk in the morning once the DCs have gone to school, then to the gym at lunch for a 45 minute class. All year round. I'd go insane sitting around inside all day.

Newmumburnout · 21/11/2024 21:57

Try listening to a podcast while you walk at lunch time. I am listening to the lady vanishes and I look forward to walking to listen to the next episode

Depends on your job though and what you enjoy
I don't get that long for lunch and I don't have flexible hours so have to be at my desk for a full shift

I really enjoy exercise after work because it marks the end of work and the start of "home"
Exercise in the early evening also seems to help my sleep whereas if I do it in the morning I want to sleep by 2pm!

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 21/11/2024 22:00

6am gym session - home 7.10 to get teen DC out to school then a 30-45min walk at during the day to keep me sane. I only do some contractual work so pretty flexible but DH joins me for walks on his WFH days too.

Ursulla · 21/11/2024 22:02

It always feels tempting at this time of year but my mood really starts to dip after even one day. You would probably be happier overall, for going out, even just for twenty minutes.
