To use Hot Chocolate as my main drink instead of coffee?

DayInTheLifeOfaMum · 20/11/2024 18:25

For background I don’t like coffee, I can’t stand the taste of it unfortunately, I wish I liked coffee but I just don’t. Since being a mum I’ve ended up drinking Hot Chocolate in the same way that some people drink Coffee, multiple times a day, at both home and work. I feel like my hot chocolates make me more awake and more alert in the same way that coffee does that for some people, I just can’t stand the taste of coffee though. DH reckons I should stop drinking hot chocolate like this, but he drinks multiple coffees a day which is not much different as I’m using hot chocolate to feel more alert and more awake which is the same thing that he uses coffees for! AIBU to use hot chocolates as my main drink instead of coffees?

I need something to keep me awake/alert and hot chocolate seems to do that for me because I don’t like the taste of coffee.

Why do you need something to keep you awake/alert? What about doing the usual things like getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals and drinking water.

Because he doesn’t believe it helps keep me awake/alert like coffee does for him. And also he says it’s apparently “different” to how he and other people have multiple coffees a day!

Well it is different in that it's a sugar bomb!

BunnyLake · 20/11/2024 19:00

I like hot chocolate but only once a day as I find it very filling. I think if I was drinking it several times a day I’d research the best quality ones with the least amount of sugar.

OP may “need” it precisely because of the hot chocolate - she’ll be having a blood sugar crash a while after the hot choc and so will feel like she needs another as a pick me up.

ThePoshUns · 20/11/2024 19:02

Could you drink a diet coke instead if you need caffeine.
Hot chocolate is high in fat and sugar, if you're drinking it daily that's a lot of extra empty calories.

Onlyvisiting · 20/11/2024 19:02

Well it's not really his decision what yo7 eat or drink. So as far as that goes he is being unreasonable.
However unless you are drinking those disgusting options ones made with hot water only then that is more like the equivalent of eating a couple mars bars at a time, rather than an alternative to coffee. It's a massive sugar hit and even if you don't have a weight issue that amount of sugar isn't healthy.
I just looked on the Costa website, a take out hot chocolate Made with semi skimmed milk contains 277 calories (1 Mars bar) and 39g of sugar. That's nearly 8 teaspoons. Per drink.

Movinghouseatlast · 20/11/2024 19:02

It is different to coffee in that it's made with milk ( or milk powder in the powdered ones) and mostly contains a lot of sugar. So it's very different to having coffee.

Have you seen the mushroom hor chocolate? For example

Spacegoods Rainbow Dust - Chocolate Flavour Mushroom Powder Drink - Start The Day with Energy & Focus - Incl Lions Mane with Chaga, Cordyceps, Maca Root & Ashwagandha - Vegan & Gluten Free - 30 serves amzn.eu/d/a3ZkLRX

What has it got to do with your H what you drink, or anyone else for that matter? It is your life. Live it.

Hot chocolate is practically a dessert rather than a drink imo. By all means drink it if you like it, but a quick Google tells me that in Costa a regular Americano with milk has 30 calories and a regular hot chocolate has 361! If you're having several a day, that's a bloody lot of calories!

Wow that is isn’t it.

I also hate tea and coffee and drink a hot chocolate fairly often.

It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against say a caramel latte or something or coffee when someone has added 3 sugars..

Applesonthelawn · 20/11/2024 19:05

It's extremely calorific and I think generally drinks should not be calorific or they replace food. It's fine as a treat but if this is your main source of liquid as you imply, absolutely not. You could not drink 2 litres of this a day and be slim and healthy. Train yourself to like something different. Water is a good place to start.

TowerBallroom · 20/11/2024 19:05

Essentially 3 Costa hot chocolates are the equivalent of 6 Mars bars!
That's insane Op
Cut down to one per day
I had a friend addicted to coke, the full sugar version
Her teeth rotted and it destroyed her health
It's the same thing
I probably drink one a year, it's so sweet

Sounds like she has just had a baby.

I had the same thing. People saying they couldn’t survive the sleep deprivation without coffees. I had to as I hate coffee!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/11/2024 19:08

Previous posters are right to say that you don’t have to pay any attention to your husband, @DayInTheLifeOfaMum - you can tell him opinions are like arseholes - everyone has them. His way isn’t ‘right’ - it is simply his way. And the fact that more people do things his way than yours is, frankly, irrelevant.

But previous posters are also right to flag up the high calorie/high sugar in your chosen drink - if you are having several in the day, that could be your entire recommended daily allowance of calories, and vastly more than the RDA of sugar.

Plastictrees · 20/11/2024 19:08

Go for it OP! I’m also not a coffee drinker. Do you have a Velvetiser, I’m obsessed with mine. It may be a bit much for drinks throughout the day though!

FishPie2 · 20/11/2024 19:08

I hate tea and coffee and drink 39 cal hot chocolate. Say what you like about it I like it and use a frother machine to make it with water.
I drink ginger and lemon tea and sometimes green tea but 3 hot chocs a day is my usual.

JustinThyme · 20/11/2024 19:09

That’s a truckload of sugar giving you a (short lived) boost, not caffeine. Or a bunch of extremely unhealthy chemicals if you’re having the sugar free versions.

It’s not remotely comparable to having several coffees a day. You’ll have a cycle of peaks and crashes. It’s a really unhealthy choice.

CourgettesCarrots · 20/11/2024 19:11

I really want a hot chocolate now

Letsgotitans · 20/11/2024 19:11

I'm a mum to a newborn and also don't drink tea or coffee. Just plenty of water. If its very cold that will perk you up!

Wherethewildthingsfart · 20/11/2024 19:12

Are you overweight?
Do you have any dental issues?

If not then that’s your future.

You don’t have to drink coffee or hot chocolate. It’s not law.

I think you've got a bit of a sugar addiction - the high you're getting is from the sugar. Whats a typical day of eating like for you?

I'd focus on trying to keep your energy stable throughout the day - plenty of protein, regular meals, plenty of fibre and lower carbs / sugar. You'll likely feel better and not need to keep reaching for the sugar.

For those asking what type of hot chocolates, I drink a mix of Costa hot chocolates, hot chocolates from other coffee shops. Instant hot chocolates at home/powder hot chocolates and hot chocolates from the machine that we have at work.

Jakers all those takeaway drinks, that's got to be expensive. I'd be making a big flask of it for work. Cocoa oddly tastes better the longer it spends in a flask. The very best cocoa is made in a saucepan, but the microwave will do.
