To use Hot Chocolate as my main drink instead of coffee?

For background I don’t like coffee, I can’t stand the taste of it unfortunately, I wish I liked coffee but I just don’t. Since being a mum I’ve ended up drinking Hot Chocolate in the same way that some people drink Coffee, multiple times a day, at both home and work. I feel like my hot chocolates make me more awake and more alert in the same way that coffee does that for some people, I just can’t stand the taste of coffee though. DH reckons I should stop drinking hot chocolate like this, but he drinks multiple coffees a day which is not much different as I’m using hot chocolate to feel more alert and more awake which is the same thing that he uses coffees for! AIBU to use hot chocolates as my main drink instead of coffees?

A lot of people put 2 spoons of sugar in their coffee so the sugar content would equal out with the hot chocolate. I’d say go for the least sugary hot chocolate you can find but not stop drinking it - you shouldn’t be dictated to as to what you drink.

I cannot stand coffee or tea. I love hot chocolate, but it’s a treat. I usually have them at night after I’ve eaten a bit like a dessert. It’s fully made from milk which is fatty, and the powder is a high percentage of sugar. I would feel awful drinking them all day.

Coffee isn’t too bad if he’s either drinking it black, or with a touch of milk. If he’s drinking big syrup filled lattes then his coffees are no better.

The instant ones are grim and I give those a swerve as best I can. They’re less milk so perhaps less fat, but still sugary. Unless they’re filled with vile sweeteners 🤮

you’re probably just getting a sugar rush from it. It’s only a problem if you’re concerned about the health impacts of drinking them. It’s up to you at the end of the day and none of his business unless he has serious health concerns for you. Not just because he doesn’t understand why you want it.

Because he doesn’t believe it helps keep me awake/alert like coffee does for him. And also he says it’s apparently “different” to how he and other people have multiple coffees a day!

It's not for him or anyone to dictate what you can and can't drink op.

I only drink water and hot chocolate. I don't like tea or coffee, don't drink alcohol and I don't like fizzy drinks or even juice.

To be honest I only have a hot chocolate once or twice a week in the cold weather and hardly ever in the summer - I have flakes or certain powders (whittard) sometimes with marshmallows but never with cream.

But that's my choice and you are perfectly entitled to drink what you like, I mean it's not like it's hurting anyone is it.

Why do you feel you need to keep “awake and alert”, and need drinks to keep you feeling that way? Are you doing 15 hour shifts in a nuclear processing facility! You would be better off making sure you had enough sleep and taking regular short fresh air breaks to keep yourself awake and alert.

I mean in an ideal world we'd all sleep well and feel fresh and perky for 17 hours but I tell you, until my kids sleep through, that ain't gonna happen. Until then I wish I could find something that would perk me up!

SleepingStandingUp · 22/11/2024 20:29

OP your DH sounds like an idiot / controlling.

You need to keep a check on your diet and if you're having too much sugar. Someone with a caffeine addiction doesn't get to judge you.
So flipping what if you're different to other people? Did he marry a homogenous entity that must conform with the consensus?
This is HIS issue if he's ashamed his wife doesn't like coffee

Red flag is your dh telling you what to drink or do

Londonrach1 · 22/11/2024 21:34

There's hot chocolate and there's hot chocolate ..which one. Re coffee...it smells nice but yet to understand why anyone likes it bitter nasty taste.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/11/2024 22:12

You sound just like my friend who loves hot chocolate and every time we have a hot drink she goes for that as she doesn't like the taste of coffee.
She says it's the same as coffee.
I don't mean to sound like a dick, but it isn't. A lot more sugar usually.
I mean it might be if the coffee is a mocha with cream, but if you're comparing filter coffee to hot chocolate they are pretty different in calories and sugar.

Can you cut down to one a day? Ultimately it's up to you what you drink (and eat) not your DH.

I also dont like coffee or white tea, i drink all sorts of other things instead, but i also love a hot chocolate especially the one from our works machine, now and then.
Green tea, soursop tea, spicy apple drink, turmeric and orange tea, lots of things out there to try you could mix into your daily drinks rather than just high sugar hot chocolates.
Have a go at trying other stuff hopefully you will find something else you enjoy
