To use Hot Chocolate as my main drink instead of coffee?

DayInTheLifeOfaMum · 20/11/2024 18:25

For background I don’t like coffee, I can’t stand the taste of it unfortunately, I wish I liked coffee but I just don’t. Since being a mum I’ve ended up drinking Hot Chocolate in the same way that some people drink Coffee, multiple times a day, at both home and work. I feel like my hot chocolates make me more awake and more alert in the same way that coffee does that for some people, I just can’t stand the taste of coffee though. DH reckons I should stop drinking hot chocolate like this, but he drinks multiple coffees a day which is not much different as I’m using hot chocolate to feel more alert and more awake which is the same thing that he uses coffees for! AIBU to use hot chocolates as my main drink instead of coffees?

It doesn't matter what you drink but multiple times.a day is not doing you any good, far too sugary.

Why worry about not liking coffee? You can have tea or a soft drink - even water.

Sounds like a great way to get diabetes

saraclara · 20/11/2024 20:14

Hot chocolate is as unhealthy as it gets. It's full of sugar and saturated fat, which is the worst kind. Your basically eating a bar of chocolate when you have a hot chocolate.

Three medium Costa hot chocolates take you to 150% of your recommended daily intake of sugar and 120% of your saturated fats RDA - without any other food or drink being consumed all day.

So yes, you need to find another pick me up if you don't want diabetes and high cholesterol leading to furred up arteries.

Whatever works for you. People saying it’s high in sugar and fat- what about those who drink at least one of those Starbucks ‘coffees’ daily that are full of syrups, cream and what not, many over 3-400 cal per drink?

That's the point - a hot chocolate is the equivalent to one of those drinks and she's having multiple a day

And those stats are for a small/regular cost drink - the large ones are 500ml, so add another 30%

I often have hot chocolate made with just cocoa powder, a dash of salt, and water topped up with milk.

The salt makes all the difference and means that you don't feel the need for sugar.

Once you take sugar out of the equation, cocoa is a great coffee alternative. Not otherwise.

Baby adult doesn’t even make sense.

I hope there are no babies drinking hot chocolate anyway.
Maybe yours did.

As an adult you can drink and eat whatever you want and unless you’re drinking it out of a baby’s bottle, then it’s not babyish.

I wouldn’t drink hot chocolate all day because of the calories and it would make me feel sick but if I wanted to then I would.

Your attitude is the most childish thing on this thread.

Cacao powder in the purest form is great. Quite nutritious has a lot of good minerals in. I use organic cacao powder and milk and it is delicious. Proper hot chocolate I'd say is this, not that processed crap full of sugar. Although it's possibly still quite high in carbs so not that great for you in that respect.

SnowLeopard5 · 20/11/2024 20:19

Probably quite a lot of sugar like others have said. You could try wean yourself off needing it. Easier said than done I know but I weaned myself off coffee (just one a day now) and feel so much better for it, although it was hard initially. Your body will get used to not having the high amounts of sugar in it eventually and you may feel better for it. Drink lots of water and get some fresh air to feel awake if you can. If that fails maybe go see your GP about any deficiency if you're feeling as tired as you said you feel.

What is the difference between cacao powder and cocoa powder (other than the stonking price markup)?

Ah gotcha. The other couple are 2013

Def more interesting then 2021 couple

viques · 20/11/2024 20:21

Why do you feel you need to keep “awake and alert”, and need drinks to keep you feeling that way? Are you doing 15 hour shifts in a nuclear processing facility! You would be better off making sure you had enough sleep and taking regular short fresh air breaks to keep yourself awake and alert.

Again tea ? Don't think multiple hot chocolates is a good idea. Hot water and lemon ? Hot water and add some cordial (those little squeezy bottles you can carry about )

This - I don’t like tea or coffee. Hot squash is a decent alternative.

Blarn · 20/11/2024 20:25

Having multiple a day is a lot of sugar and calories (and I do not shy away from sugar!) I enjoy coffee but when dc were very little I added pro-plus into my day.

whynotwhatknot · 20/11/2024 20:29

i think its too much an im a chocoholic i feel bad if i have 2 bars of someting a day le alone drinking hot choolate multiple times a day

WimpoleHat · 20/11/2024 20:30

And also he says it’s apparently “different” to how he and other people have multiple coffees a day!

I agree with him (at least, I am if he’s talking about filter coffee rather than pumpkin spice latte with cream on top). Hot chocolate is very nice - but it contains a lot of sugar and calories. It’s the difference between several Diet Cokes and several ice cream milkshakes; they’re both drinks which aren’t the healthiest, but drinking one is going to make you put on a lot of weight.

Notcontent · 20/11/2024 20:30

DayInTheLifeOfaMum · 20/11/2024 18:33

For those asking what type of hot chocolates, I drink a mix of Costa hot chocolates, hot chocolates from other coffee shops. Instant hot chocolates at home/powder hot chocolates and hot chocolates from the machine that we have at work.

That’s a huge amount of sugar on a daily basis (and fat).

most people who drink coffee are not having multiple lattes with sugar.

With cacao the beans are sun dried not roasted, and the powder isn't dutched (alkaliser added) so they're considered a bit less processed.

Bloody hell, it’s hot chocolate, not cocaine! 🤣🤣 your post made me chuckle as it did sound like you were talking about something much naughtier. Yes it’s very sweet, but it won’t do you any more harm than a coffee with sugar in, which I’m sure many people have throughout the day. Drinking more than one or two coffees a day is bad for the hormones anyway, so it’s no worse as it has less caffeine.
I don’t have sweet tooth, but I must admit I’m becoming very partial to the Cadbury’s choc orange pods that you can get for the Tassimo. Try those, you won’t regret it! 😊

WinterBones · 20/11/2024 20:31

i used to LOATHE coffee, would drink tea but could take it or leave it (still the same now) but love hot chocolate.

I wouldn't recommend drinking it like you would coffee, the sugar/fat content in it isn't great.. if you use a high quality cocoa powder with semi skimmed milk it is a little better, but not much.

You'd be better off finding a tea you like the flavour of, like green tea, or a fruit tea. There's companies like Bird & Blend that do some lovely blends with chocolate and fruit flavours in!

My other go-to is i like blackcurrant, so i sometimes just drink hot ribena

I LOVE coffee now, i came to it by way of liking iced caramel latte, then trying hot caramel latte, then adjusting the syrup. I can now drink coffee black/no sugar but don't do it often i must admit!!

I don’t really like tea much either unfortunately.

You can get chocolate flavoured "teas", Pukka do one, they are nice with milk.

I treat hot chocolate more as a dessert than a drink so I would find it weird to drink more than one a day.

A hot chocolate has 8.5 times as much sugar in it than a tea with a spoon of sugar. So yes, it will do more harm.
