To think that people under 50 don’t watch the king’s speech on Christmas Day?

Just that really. I’ve never watched it because I grew up in a household that wasn’t royalist. I don’t know any friends who make time to watch it. The only person I know who does watch it is my 82-year-old MiL.
So do you watch it? Are you under 50?

I'm 62- never watched it - even with the queen

Eraserbread · 18/11/2024 20:47

36, never watched it nor have my parents. Not remotely interested.

Redcrayons · 18/11/2024 20:48

I’m 52, wouldn’t say that I’ve never watched it, as I’m sure that’s it’s been on in the background.

I’ve never watched it on purpose though.

Also: can't open presents until after the speech!

Mid 30s, have always watched it, kids watch it too. Also agree with this! Presents after the speech!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/11/2024 20:49

Excuse me? I'm 46 and I've watched it every year for as long as I can remember. It's not a 'royalist' thing - it's just a lovely moment to me. I always enjoyed listening to The Queen for those 10 minutes and I'm sure that The King will continue to have a similarly calming voice in the midst of the craziness of Christmas Day.

cherry2727 · 18/11/2024 20:50

I'm mid 30s and never watched it!!

PetuniaK · 18/11/2024 20:51

Never watched it either. Middle aged 😂

heartsinvisiblefury · 18/11/2024 20:51

Never watched it and never will.

Soñando25 · 18/11/2024 20:52

Sixty plus and never watch it!

TheChosenTwo · 18/11/2024 20:53

I’m 40 and have never watched it, anti royalist so never plan on doing so either! Not even sure what it’s about tbh and definitely not interested in finding out 😂
we don’t have the telly on on Christmas Day anyway, house full of people and games and food, way better things to be doing!

irregularegular · 18/11/2024 20:54

Never watched it. Early 50s.

Shopgirl2 · 18/11/2024 20:55

No, and I'm definitely not feeling good will towards any speeches they could make in the wake of the news on their millions they make off of us for rent, charging the NHS for a garage for putting ambulances and for launching lifeboats and schools and playing fields etc etc .

MaryGreenhill · 18/11/2024 20:55

We watch it now but never did until we got older . I think we just change as we get older .

Appleandoranges · 18/11/2024 20:57

I don't think it's anything to do with age just preference!

Exactly, I don't know how he has the audacity to show his face in public. He should be ashamed of what he is doing. It's so hypocritical.

They should play the documentary right before the speech.

NecklessMumster · 18/11/2024 20:58

Mid 60s, never watched it and never will, nor did my parents. Nothing to do with age

StrawberryWater · 18/11/2024 20:59

Never watched it. My parents didn't either.

coxesorangepippin · 18/11/2024 20:59

I don't watch it

I'm under 50

Shhhthedogssleeping · 18/11/2024 20:59

I’m in my 60s and have never had any interest in watching it. My parents didn’t either. It just want anything we thought relevant or meaningfult to us. Adult DC mid to late 30s don’t watch it and as republican as past generations of family.

AuntieMarys · 18/11/2024 21:01

I'm 66 and never watched one. Never will

Fluufer · 18/11/2024 21:02

Never watched it in my life. Got no interest in anything they have to say.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 18/11/2024 21:03

I'm 68 and have never watched it. It just wasn't a thing in our house. My mother would watch it "while my dinner goes down" but it wasn't obligatory for anyone and my father wouldn't have dreamt of sitting down to watch it - he was too busy doing the washing up and smoking his pipe.

alibongo5 · 18/11/2024 21:04

I'm 62 and have never watched it. Moreover back in the 80s I had a pre-broadcast script on my desk weeks before Christmas (I worked at the BBC) and wasn't even bothered enough to read it.

AGoingConcern · 18/11/2024 21:08

I’m not originally British so unsurprisingly it’s not a must for me on Christmas, but neither my DH’s British family nor the British friends I spent some Christmas Days with when I was single ever sat down to watch it. Most years I end up seeing at least a few clips or quotes in the news, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt like I had missed something my social circle expected everyone to have seen.

I can see where it just makes things feel like Christmas to watch it if people grew up doing that, though. Most of us have those types of things.
