To think that people under 50 don’t watch the king’s speech on Christmas Day?

Just that really. I’ve never watched it because I grew up in a household that wasn’t royalist. I don’t know any friends who make time to watch it. The only person I know who does watch it is my 82-year-old MiL.
So do you watch it? Are you under 50?

Since you no longer tend to have "The Big Film" on at 10 past 3 these days I think a lot of people simply aren't sitting down to watch TV at that time of the day.
I don't usually watch the speech because it's at an awkward time but I usually read about what was said or watch highlights online later in the day.
If the new Wallace and Gromit is on at 10 past 3 then this year I probably will watch the King because we will have put the TV on for Wallace and Gromit.

ElizaMulvil · 18/11/2024 19:59

Don't know anyone who watches it.

Americano75 · 18/11/2024 20:01

Never watched it, never will.

Wait- what?? Who’s doing Wallace’s voice?? Forget the king, this is much more important 🤣

I do, early 40s, family Christmas tradition.

Needmorelego · 18/11/2024 20:02

@AlertCat I think it's Peter Kaye......🤔

Cosycover · 18/11/2024 20:03

Couldn't give two fucks about what any of them have got to say.

Username917778 · 18/11/2024 20:03

I'm 32 and I have never watched it. I don't know anyone who would! Maybe my husbands family who are in England? (we are in Scotland)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 18/11/2024 20:03

Never watched it, my parents in their 70s have never watched it either. 3pm in our house is usually flame the pudding time

user2848502016 · 18/11/2024 20:03

I do, i'm not particularly royalist but I think it's a nice traditional part of the day

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/11/2024 20:04

Have always made a point of not watching it. Neither does anyone l know.

Im 61

TheDefiant · 18/11/2024 20:04

Under 50. Often watch. Always watched the Boss our Captain General (The Queen)

UBIQUE.

Needmorelego · 18/11/2024 20:05

@AlertCat I was wrong. It's Ben Whitehead as Wallace. Peter Kay does another character.
The adverts say Netflix but us Brits get it on the beeb on Xmas day !

dicdicnurse · 18/11/2024 20:05

Always watch it and remember doing so a child. It's part of the tradition of the day. I'm 48

tinytemper66 · 18/11/2024 20:05

I am 58 and have never watched it.

Tulipvase · 18/11/2024 20:06

49 and we didn’t watch it. Dinner was perfectly timed to clash. We also didn’t used to open presents till after dinner. Was good actually, kept the suspense going. I wish I’d done it with mine but we used to do our presents in the morning and then presents with my parents after dinner. Since they died that obvs doesn’t happen! If we didn’t have other family over for dinner every other year, I’d be tempted to try it.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 18/11/2024 20:06

My parents late 70s/80s and don't watch, I only watched one year when basically everyone was ill and we were having a super quiet day. We rarely have the TV on all day and certainly wouldn't be watching King Speech if we did.

icelollycraving · 18/11/2024 20:06

I watch. I’m 51. Dh and Ds have zero interest.

Allywill · 18/11/2024 19:55

i am also over 50 and have never watched it. don’t know how people have time to be honest, christmas day is really full on.

Ours isn’t. It’s a pretty normal day.

I’ve never watched a queen’s or king’s speech. Or Star Wars.

Cannotgetyou · 18/11/2024 20:07

We’re under 50 and watch it.

Always have.

sophiasnail · 18/11/2024 20:07

We always watch it, although sometimes it's delayed until after "lunch". I'm 43.

Onlyvisiting · 18/11/2024 20:07

38, never watched it even once. (Or the queen). Not even sure when it's on

Gillyyy · 18/11/2024 20:08

We’ve always sat down to watch the King’s/Queen’s speech with a cup of tea as a family, I’m 29. When I’ve been to my husbands family for Christmas I’ve watched it with his Granny. It would feel wrong to not watch it!

OregonPine · 18/11/2024 20:09

I'm under 50 and I've never watched it. I just don't see why you would. But each to their own!

Nicebloomers · 18/11/2024 20:10

Family of republicans going waaay back so never watched it and never will.
