To think that people under 50 don’t watch the king’s speech on Christmas Day?

Just that really. I’ve never watched it because I grew up in a household that wasn’t royalist. I don’t know any friends who make time to watch it. The only person I know who does watch it is my 82-year-old MiL.
So do you watch it? Are you under 50?

I’m 53 & never watched it never given it much of a thought, no one I have ever spent Christmas Day with has ever mentioned watching it either.

RockyRogue1001 · 18/11/2024 20:11

Over 50.
Never seen it

MumOfOneAllAlone · 18/11/2024 20:12

I randomly started watching it in the pandemic year

But I didn't grow up watching it and if i miss it, I'm not arsed to go hunting about for it on the iplayer x

Puddings and Presents (none Santa ones!) after the queens speech when we were little and it's continued, now my DH and I always watch and raise a toast to 'the boss' - he's ex-military although it was more meaningful when the queen was alive

Heatherbell1978 · 18/11/2024 20:13

I'm under 50 and always make a point of watching it. Have done since as long as I can remember. Sorry!

Stretchedresources · 18/11/2024 20:13

I'm 50 and always watch it. Food around 2pm then the speech at 3.

LizzoBennett · 18/11/2024 20:14

Everyone I know that watches it is 50+

MumChp · 18/11/2024 20:14

We watch it. Also before we were 50.

woffley · 18/11/2024 20:14

66 and may have watched it as a child but not since. Nor did my parents who would have been in their 90s if still alive.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 18/11/2024 20:14

Have watched it every year. Under 50.

roastiepotato · 18/11/2024 20:15

I watch it purely to give everyone a chance to sit still!!!!

LostTheMarble · 18/11/2024 20:15

Never watched it, but another growing up in a non-royalty loving family and also not English (not saying the UK outside of England aren’t royalist but it’s certainly more of a divide).

If the new Wallace and Gromit is on at 10 past 3 then this year I probably will watch the King because we will have put the TV on for Wallace and Gromit.

Wait- what?? Who’s doing Wallace’s voice?? Forget the king, this is much more important 🤣

Oh god no, Wallace & Grommit yawn 🥱

Comedycook · 18/11/2024 20:16

Every year I plan to watch it and every year I forget!

Needmorelego · 18/11/2024 20:17

All those saying you've NEVER watched it - did you not as children in the 80s watch "The Big Film" that was on at 3.10? BBC1 and ITV would always have a premier showing of a big blockbuster film. Back then it you missed a film at the cinema you missed it ! This would often be the first chance to see a popular film and it would always be a big family debate to which film to watch, which to record to watch later. Everyone I know watched the films.
Most families watched the Queen simply because the TV would be going on for the film and you put it on 10 minutes before because "We might as well see what the Queen has to say" as my Dad would put it.

BraOffPjsOn · 18/11/2024 20:17

Never watched it but I also grew up thinking that the Match Of the Day theme tune was our national anthem! So royalist I am not!

Needmorelego · 18/11/2024 20:17

@allthegoodusernameshavegone what's wrong with Wallace and Gromit?

Redflagsabounded · 18/11/2024 20:17

I'm nearly 60 and never watched it. Nor my parents.

The only person I know who does, is in her 40s and from a family of royalists so grew up with it.

Maybe more to do with that than age?

AlertCat · 18/11/2024 20:18

@Needmorelego thanks! Not sure about that although I do love W&G 😬

back on topic!
maybe I just don’t know enough royalists to have a balanced view of the speech. I’m quite surprised at the number of people who watch it tbh.

It caused big arguments when I was a teenager and I refused to watch the then Queen's speech -despite being a socialist my father was a staunch royalist.
So since then I have never watched a Queen's speech and will never watch a King's speech. I'm 72 now.

LaineyCee · 18/11/2024 20:18

Republican family. Back in the days of limited TV channels, we used to have a Christmas Day sweepstake on what colour dress the Queen would be wearing. Charles doesn’t even offer that limited entertainment prospect. I don’t know anyone under 150 who’ll be watching.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/11/2024 20:19

I'm 62 and never knowingly watched the royal speech on Christmas day.

user1469770863 · 18/11/2024 20:20
  1. Never watched it, never will.
Feelinadequate23 · 18/11/2024 20:20

Late 30s, watch it every year. Family tradition started by grandmas. We always toast the monarch with a glass of champagne so it’s something we look forward to!

BiscottiToffee · 18/11/2024 20:23

Mid 30s, watched all my life. DH never watched. First Christmas at my mum's he was told in absolutely no uncertain terms that it was non negotiable in our household.

I don't know if it's different for us because my mum was an immigrant, had to pledge allegiance to the monarchy, and so we were raised with the deepest respect for the royals.
