That the current laundry storage systems on the market are all a bit crap and inflexible?

Why can’t they sell a vertical laundry solution which enables me to sort the laundry into different washes, so that I can quickly put a load on? Or different colours? Why can’t it be modular and go upwards rather than have the big old laundry hampers which take up space?

Why can’t they be modular and the modules have wheels so that I can wheel around?

@Meanwhile33 how do you find the capacity of the josephjoseph one? It doesn't look like it would be big enough for my family of 4.

OregonPine · 18/11/2024 13:29

I'd argue that you're trying to solve the wrong problem. 😉 I just bung everything in the washing machine together, no sorting required.

Meanwhile33 · 18/11/2024 13:33

@StickyStones a full bag is a full load in our machine, it’s not crammed full in the machine but worth putting on. There are 3 of us and they fill up pretty quickly.

I can't see how the triple version would work, it’s the same size overall so each bag in that ones must be less than a full load.

I guess it's not very lovely but then it's in the laundry room which is a functional room.

A laundry room - nice. I'm jealous! It would be perfect in a laundry room.

Anycrispsleft · 18/11/2024 13:41

What I would like is like cotton bags in a cube shape that take about a load of washing, and 2 frames that you could hang them off - one with 2 spaces that goes outside the bedrooms for us to drop dirty washing in, and then one down the stairs with 4 spaces that I could use to sort everyone's clothes into a bag each and then they could just take the bag up the stairs and put it in their drawers at their own pace (or in DD2's and my case they could just live from bag to bag with none of it ever seeing the inside of a drawer).

StickyStones · 18/11/2024 13:46

@Meanwhile33 yeah I agree, I noticed that the capacity was the same for both the 2-bag and 3-bag versions, i can't see the point of the 3 compartments.

I could put a small laundry basket in my room and then leave a larger one on the landing...

NotColdNotFrozen · 18/11/2024 14:20

Resisterance · 18/11/2024 13:12

That's the nicest so far but it doesn't have the sorting function by the looks of things

Looks lovely but I bet when you fill it with dirty washing it’s also a brute to carry.

What I do is any laundry produced downstairs is put straight into the machine. 11 year old has a hip basket in his room and we have a curver hamper in our room, we don't separate and once a full 10kg load can be done, if gets done

I just don't sort it. Other than whites, and that's really only term time as our only white items are school tops. Everything else goes in together. Life's too short to sort laundry.

Cartwrightandson · 18/11/2024 15:12

Curver hamper also comes I different colors

Am I missing something? Is this a normal laundry hamper?

Perhaps it's because a laundry hamper works just fine, I carry it to the kitchen and empty onto the floor, load the dark or light stuff and put the rest back in. It's over 25 years old so see no need to replace

GodspeedJune · 18/11/2024 15:43

I would love a solution to this too. I have a three compartment sorter laundry hamper bought from JL a few years ago but it’s wide, not very tall and still needs emptying into a basket to take the washing to the machine.

LoveSandbanks · 18/11/2024 15:45

DysmalRadius · 18/11/2024 13:26

I have recently decided to never sort laundry again! Each member of the household has their own laundry hamper and it gets done when they have a full load. No more fishing around in mixed bags of everyone's stuff - each load is processed and back to its owner to put away. And because the boring bit has been eliminated, the kids don't mind doing it themselves - win/win!

This is what I now do. Don’t even fold the laundry anymore!

soupfiend · 18/11/2024 16:05

The trouble is most people have laundry baskets in their bedrooms, the landing or the bathroom
That means they have to be of a design that doesnt look too utilitarian but also that you can transport downstairs easily
We dont have a perfect solution, we have some silly little storage baskets that all loll all over the floor, because OH puts things on top rather than in them, but he prefers them because they're easier to carry down stairs, he didnt like the big tall ones we had because you couldnt get a grip of them and they were quite big to manovoure.

So our landing looks a state

I agree OP. What I’d like is a laundry chute into a basement where a robot does it all for me.

I have fantasies about one of these!
My neighbours have an upstairs laundry room.

EvilMama · 18/11/2024 16:32

We have similar to what @Cartwrightandson posted. If it's a similar size, it takes two loads so I carry it down when it's full. I have four, one bedding/underwear, one dark, one colours & whites and one for sports kit. Dc have been trained to sort it into the correct hamper when they take it off. They will both put on a dark or bedding washing asked as they don't need to sort it or change the default program.

Wendysfriend · 18/11/2024 16:44

This has been the biggest pain in my arse for years, that and a place/yoke for hanging coats up !!

With 7 people here, there's tons of washing, everyone has their own basket but I end up tipping them over the banisters to get the clothes downstairs because they're too heavy ! 90 % of laundry baskets are too deep, I nearly fall in trying to reach the bottom ! Then the ones that do look a little useful after too small and only good for holding about 5 items of clothing !

unsync · 18/11/2024 17:05

Joseph Joseph do a triple bin. 25% off coming up for Black Friday.

EssentiallyItsTrue · 18/11/2024 17:12

We just use curver boxes. They go to and fro the bedrooms and they stack on top of each other with clothes in or stack inside each other when they are empty. They are easy to clean and cheap.

I would like a laundry bag that hangs over a stair bannister for one of my kids houses as they have a very small bathroom. Something which is a bag with some way of hooking it on to the bannister rail.

smooththecat · 18/11/2024 17:51

If you don’t have a utility room, the only good looking solution is a normal cupboard or drawers, e.g. inside the wardrobe, inside a kitchen drawer. Laundry baskets are horrible.

Edit. I would need at least four compartments, darks, lights, sheets and towels, handwashing.
