That the current laundry storage systems on the market are all a bit crap and inflexible?

Why can’t they sell a vertical laundry solution which enables me to sort the laundry into different washes, so that I can quickly put a load on? Or different colours? Why can’t it be modular and go upwards rather than have the big old laundry hampers which take up space?

Why can’t they be modular and the modules have wheels so that I can wheel around?

I think recycling storage needs a redesign too. It's still not caught up.

coffeeandteav · 18/11/2024 19:35

Do people carry the basket downstairs?

I just get a bundle in my arms and carry it.

My mum used to have a separate plastic basket to carry it but I don't want to store one.

amoreoamicizia · 18/11/2024 19:48

Rather than a basket I have a laundry bag for carrying it. it's like a very oversized duffle bag. I find it's easier to carry than a basket as I sometimes have to hold onto the stairs handrail if I've been having low blood pressure!

NotColdNotFrozen · 18/11/2024 19:56

I’ve resorted to ikea bags for carrying it around but not everyone will like that and for my mum in her seventies for instance, it makes sense to have a wheely contraption

I'd argue that you're trying to solve the wrong problem. 😉 I just bung everything in the washing machine together, no sorting required.

How is this even possible ?
I am at the other extreme, I sort by colour group as well as whites and blacks, plus wools, silks, and sheets.

kaos2 · 18/11/2024 19:57

There is a Joseph Joseph one that you take out the insert to carry downstairs .

Very true.

Hopefully some day we will chuckle and say “Do you remember those old style laundry baskets?”

With the expense should come some innovation.

I think I could add kitchen bins to this list of stuff which isn’t well designed. I once spent in excess of £120 and it was rubbish. Almost like the designer had never had to use a bin before.

People are sorting laundry???? 🤣

Onlyvisiting · 18/11/2024 20:06

I guess I do my bedsheets separately. But that's because they are a full load and I wash and dry all together then back on the bed.
I sometimes lob a dog coat or toy in the main wash. Everything still comes out clean. 🤷‍♀️

JedwardScissorhandz · 18/11/2024 20:13

I have the Joseph one, it's fabulous, but there are only two of us.

EmmaStone · 18/11/2024 20:18

I haven't got the solution for you, but am happy with my arrangement. We have one of those rectangular laundry baskets in each bedroom (ours lives in an empty blanket chest at the foot of our bed, the kids' lives in their wardrobes). I only get the chance to wash a couple of times a week, so everyone be brings their baskets down on those days, I empty them on the floor and sort into darks and whites, then wash. Out of the machine into the baskets and sorted for tumble drying/air drying, and then once dry, folded into appropriate basket for each room, and each person takes their basket upstairs, puts clothes away and basket is empty again.

RomeoRivers · 18/11/2024 20:19

We have this, I love it!

hamsandyams · 18/11/2024 20:34

Another vote for JosephJoseph. Each basket holds one full load so when it's full it needs to go on.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 18/11/2024 22:09

I've got a nylon bag, it's like an oversized school PE bag with a draw string. I empty the contents of the laundry basket into it, then lob it down the stairs.
I got it from IKEA and I tried to get more but it's discontinued. Sheets and towels get bundles up and lobbed downstairs too.
Sadly, I still have to go down and put it all in the machine.

So do I and as I live in a town house I have lots of steps and always lose a few items on the way down.

SLRUS · 18/11/2024 23:23

I'm adding a third vote for the Joseph Joseph one. It's so perfect that everyone has one in their room here. Bags super light to carry down the stairs and easy to do.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/joseph-joseph-tota-trio-easy-empty-laundry-basket-90l/ecru/p6385302?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

JedwardScissorhandz · 18/11/2024 23:43

TK Maxx has been having the Joseph ones in store, so maybe try there and homesense as well as Joseph stuff is usually a lot cheaper there.

AmusedFish · 19/11/2024 02:37

i just use Aldi bags

Pinkmoonshine · 19/11/2024 03:30

I just use small light ikea baskets which I can actually put on top of each other! Baskets not boxes - plastic ones but narrow

EssentiallyItsTrue · 19/11/2024 08:52

I used to have a house with a laundry chute (not uk) it was amazing
