That the current laundry storage systems on the market are all a bit crap and inflexible?

Why can’t they sell a vertical laundry solution which enables me to sort the laundry into different washes, so that I can quickly put a load on? Or different colours? Why can’t it be modular and go upwards rather than have the big old laundry hampers which take up space?

Why can’t they be modular and the modules have wheels so that I can wheel around?

The traditional style laundry baskets are heavy and awkward and not particularly mobile. There will be people with impairments who find them awkward etc.

it’s about time something more innovative was designed!

Maybe it's a topple risk for small kids

NotColdNotFrozen · 18/11/2024 12:38

IKEA sell a tall skinny unit but apparently you cannot clean out the containers..

But that could be resolved by design couldn’t it?

Could you use these?

Kallax. One wide, four high. Different coloured boxes. Sort as you go. Full box = load of laundry.

We used the stackable Ikea recycling bins in our laundry room. I think they are called Sortera or something like that. Not very pretty though.

WisteriaSister · 18/11/2024 12:46

I agree, couldn’t find any suitable “laundry” solution so I use a nice chest of drawers.

Havalona · 18/11/2024 12:46

Sortera used here also.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/11/2024 12:51

Do a Google search for 'Rolling laundry sorter'. Quite a few options came up for me, both horizontal and vertical. They aren't things of beauty though.

Eg Wayfair

Or maybe they just didn’t think about it because there is a lack of diversity in the design role. The people who design things are often men.. Men who are not single parents with a big pile of laundry at home, caring responsibilities and their full time job on top.

I agree OP. What I’d like is a laundry chute into a basement where a robot does it all for me.

DiscoBeat · 18/11/2024 12:57

I have this, it's so simple. Just empty everyone's laundry baskets into it each morning into Whites, Darks, Lights and Hot Wash. Each full one is a load.

Another sortera user here. Its a shame it doesnt come in other colours. The white gets very dirty in our farm utility room.

StickyStones · 18/11/2024 13:01

It's practical @DiscoBeat but man is it ugly! I'm also at a loss regarding laundry, I've searched high and low and nothing fits the bill. My laundry basket is on our landing and I want it to look nice,.

I guess it's not very lovely but then it's in the laundry room which is a functional room.

We got one built into our kitchen from diy kitchens...love it as so easy to use. No idea why other places don't do the same thing. There are two large containers with handles on that can be removed...it's hidden behind a door and has a shelf. It's difficult to explain but it literally works! Ils right next to the washing machine too...I have a small kitchen too but this laundry cupboard works and space saving

Bangwam1 · 18/11/2024 13:08

Good idea! You’re right about the solutions not being ideal for the environment. We’re still using furniture and storage made for big houses when we should be adapting to more Japanese design in everything.

Resisterance · 18/11/2024 13:12

That's the nicest so far but it doesn't have the sorting function by the looks of things

Merrow · 18/11/2024 13:16

We use a trofast one with 3 boxes, I think you can get higher ones for people who sort things better than we do! I agree it's odd though, this was our temporary solution until we found a better one, and 3 years later it remains the best option for our space.

OrchestralRemoversInTheDark · 18/11/2024 13:23

I've got IKEA Jonaxel precursor in the utility room for sorting clothes after they've been washed - each person has a tray including the house itself for towels etc.

But to collect it I've just got 3 bags with handles which take 1-2 loads for whites/colours/sheets.

DysmalRadius · 18/11/2024 13:26

I have recently decided to never sort laundry again! Each member of the household has their own laundry hamper and it gets done when they have a full load. No more fishing around in mixed bags of everyone's stuff - each load is processed and back to its owner to put away. And because the boring bit has been eliminated, the kids don't mind doing it themselves - win/win!
