AIBU to do my make up in the bathroom at work

When I get into work I often spend five mins in the ladies loo doing my make up.

A colleague told me the other day that “some people” feel uncomfortable using the loo when I am “standing around in there”. I think she meant because I am outside the cubicle doors standing at the basin/mirror.

I thought doing your make up at work was no more intrusive than washing your hands!

As ever, find the middle ground. Touching up concealer, powder or lipstick quickly: totally fine and normal, a full foundation/eyshadow/mascara/contouring routine is a bit self interested.

Do you have a hand dryer in your toilets?. If I’m ever fannying around at the sink ( putting lipstick on, brushing my teeth etc) I will stick the hand dryer on for anyone that’s gone into a cubicle. 20 seconds of noise - then I get out as quickly as possible.

That's so bad for the environment

OP if it's really just "five minutes" just do it at home. Or don't wear any!

Why? I do mine at work when in the office, why not? There is more than one handbasin so I’m not stopping anyone washing hands.

I keep a bag of work make up there. I’m not on a clock, and do more than what would be usual contracted hours, and often have to do meetings at unsociable hours such as 3am. The whole ‘it’s only 5mins’ is bunk. That can be the difference between getting a seat or not in transport and fucked if my head is coming off the pillow one minute earlier than absolutely necessary in the morning. I even go with bed hair and do it there with the make up, not like I’m going to be arrested on transport for bed hair! Have brekkie there as well.

If someone spoke to me about doing make up in the loo, I’d give them a Paddington bear stare, and clearly indicate it’s a ‘you problem’ not a ‘me problem’.

I worked in an office years ago and it was a commuting time thing for me- i started at 8 and the trains got me to work at 7.20 or 7.50. If i did my makeup at home and took the later train i would have to rush and felt flustered, if i got the earlier train i had plenty of time to pop on a quick face and have a coffee before my day started. Could i get up even earlier and do it at home? Sure, but then i’d be arsing around the office with nothing to do 20 minutes more tired than i had to be.

YANBU, there's nothing wrong with putting on makeup at work. Bathrooms aren't just for pooing in.

All the people saying YABU - do you not cycle in to work, or imagine what that might be like for a cyclist?

Do you never go out after work and need to put on a bit more makeup before you leave the office? And not want to do it at your desk, if it's an open plan office?

Honestly say I have never once got to work and thought ‘hmm I wonder if a cyclist has to top their make up when they get to work’ haha

A lot of them shower when they get to work. The vast majority at least get changed and freshen up.

Some people get 'stage fright' in public restrooms. If someone's washing their hands, it's usually noisy and fast, then they're gone. Someone quietly applying make-up will be more likely to overhear whatever's happening in the stalls. I'm not surprised some people don't like it, to tell the truth.

Agree with this to be honest.

Quick question, if it takes just five minutes.. how come you can’t do your make up before you get to work?

They might not know if they'll have time so rush to get in then they know they have time

I dont think poo particle migrate the three feet between the loo bowl, through the cubicle door and on to the basin surround where I set down my make up bag.😆 Also I do my make up at home in the bathroom where there is a loo. Are these poo particles everywhere in every bathroom??

I accept about 50% of MN thinks I am being unreasonable so I’ll compromise - half my office days I’ll do my make up in the loo and the shy poo-ers will just have to relax and half my office days I’ll expose my haggard skin to the world or perhaps scrape on some foundation before I leave the house (unlikely).

They can actually travel 9ft and yes there will be poo particles in your bathroom at home unless everyone using it puts the lid down to flush

Is there a disabled loo you could use in peace? That's what I used to do when I cycled in

Disabled toilets are for people who need them due to their disability, not for people too arse lazy to finish getting ready before they leave for work. Sadly I'm not surprised at this suggestion, the entitlement is becoming the norm these days.

Naturally you wouldn't think that in the course of everyday life - but you might in the context of this thread (and now you have!)

merriadock · 16/11/2024 08:08

I brush my teeth in the sink at work on arrival. After an early start and a long commute it makes me feel more ready for a long day of teaching. I do brush them before leaving the house but doing it again makes me feel better. If any of the kids catch me now they don’t think anything of it.

DoublePasta · 14/11/2024 20:55

Presumably it's because people don't like coming in and using the toilet whilst you are there for the duration of their visit. If you were washing your hands you would be gone by the time they came out of the cubicle.

This.
Also, some folk don't like seeing others do their make up.
Just do it at home.

What about cycling to work would you consider “arse lazy”?
If the toilet is unoccupied and not radar locked anyone can use it.

The whole idea is that only disabled folk use it though. 🫣

That is the very definition of “not anyone elses problem” 😂
why should anyone give a fuck if you “like” seeing them regardless of what they’re doing. What a weird thing to say.

YANBU

I used to do mine on the train because the lighting in my bathroom was horrendous at 5 am and I walked to the train station. By time I would get there, my face would be covered in condensation or sweat so anything I did was partially gone by time I sat down. I was usually the only one in the car so no one to bother and was done by the next stop.

I changed jobs and would do mine at work where there was a mirror for that reason in our back room. Again, someone who has to walk to commute to work.

It must be nice to be those who doesn’t sweat or get condensation on their face.

It’s a bathroom. People would moan if someone decided to do it at their desk and suggest, why not the bathroom? 🙄

If it takes just five minutes as they say it does, then get up five minutes earlier.

It’s not that difficult.

Imagine how busy the bathroom would be at work if we all chose to do this instead of doing our make up routine at home. 🙄

No it isn’t, nor has it ever been. Accessible bathrooms are just that-accessible. The vast majority of accessible bathrooms also double as changing places. There are a huge range of reasons someone would need access to a larger bathroom cubicle.

phoenixrosehere · 16/11/2024 08:20

It’s a public bathroom. How do they cope in other public bathrooms then when people apply their make-up? Do they avoid all public bathrooms and only go at home?

People also brush their teeth in public bathrooms (had colleagues that do this), would that be as bad, or is it just make-up?

drippingtapp · 16/11/2024 08:21

Nothing, but you know that.

If the toilet is unoccupied and not radar locked anyone can use it.

Thank you for demonstrating the entitlement.

I don’t want to get up five minutes earlier when I have plenty of time at work to do it. Luckily martyrs like you get up five minutes early so the bathroom isnt busy 🙄
