AIBU to do my make up in the bathroom at work

When I get into work I often spend five mins in the ladies loo doing my make up.

A colleague told me the other day that “some people” feel uncomfortable using the loo when I am “standing around in there”. I think she meant because I am outside the cubicle doors standing at the basin/mirror.

I thought doing your make up at work was no more intrusive than washing your hands!

It’s not your problem that other people are so self conscious that they think you even acknowledge their bodily functions. Do your makeup. The space is for everyone to use.

I've got IBS. When I'm having a flare up I get loads of wind and the trots. It's not a case of being self-conscious, no-one wants to hear the loud, explosive farts that accompany the emptying bowels or smell the resultant odour.

And when I've got to go, I've not got the time to wait for Marjorie from accounts to finish applying her lipstick!

Aw bless you you’re very polite. But honestly babe you have as much right to fart up a storm as i do to put my makeup on. Go for it. If you’re not bothered i’m not. It’s expected to hear toileting noises and smell toileting smells in the toilet!

pilates · 16/11/2024 05:22

Patronising reply there. Obviously, she has a right to use the toilet as anyone else but with IBS you don’t have control of when you can go. The op feels uncomfortable and quite rightly so but obviously makeup person’s right trumps that.

It wasn’t intended to be patronising, i genuinely think its very sweet that anyone gives a fuck about the effects of their farts on other people in public bathrooms but if you’re determined to be arsey about it go for it 😂

your discomfort at other people sharing a public space doesn’t trump their right to also use that public space. Its none of your business what im doing in the bathroom and its none of mine what you’re doing. In fact, i’d go as far as saying its pretty fucking weird to be fixated on who else is there rather than just getting on with what you’re doing.

pilates · 16/11/2024 05:37

You don’t think it sweet you just don’t give a fuck let’s be honest.

I can both think that its sweet to worry about people hearing you fart and not give a fuck what anyone else is doing in the toilet. Its not anyone elses problem that you think too much about who else is in the bathroom rather than just shit and go.

Pumpkincozynights · 16/11/2024 06:18

It wouldn’t bother me as long as there was more than one mirror/sink.
Regarding doing it in works time, that also wouldn’t bother me as long as the work is being done.
We had a manager who insisted you stay at your desk until 5pm with your lap top switched on. We then had to log off, lock all our documents away. Take the key to this room to the safe in another room, open and then lock up the safe, lock this door. Switch everything in the building off and alarm and lock the premises all after 5pm when we had officially stopped working. Didn’t matter if you had completed all your work by 4.58pm you had to perform this rigmarole even on a Friday. I stopped working unpaid through my lunch which left work undone and made sure I logged off at 5pm. I think someone must have had a word with this manager, as people stated working to rule and leaving the building at lunchtime, and as a result doing less work. People also stopped working as soon as they arrived at work, and only stated working bang on 9am. Give and take goes a long, long way.

luckylavender · 16/11/2024 06:19

I don't think it's great tbh. And make always leaves residue.

LlynTegid · 16/11/2024 06:21

So you arrive at work without make up, why not keep it that way?

Because she wants to put makeup on?

Viviennemary · 16/11/2024 06:28

Yes. It's awful. Once in an Emergency situation is OK I suppose but every day. Just yuck.

Who are all these people waiting to get to work to do their morning poo? 😶‍🌫️

It's about an hour after they have finished their coffee

TheKoalaWhoCould · 16/11/2024 06:35

I put mine on in the car. Our hospital has a dank, dark multi-storey car park so actually it’s very nice - it’s a bit like being in an isolation tank for 5 mins. Very soothing! Grin

rwalker · 16/11/2024 06:37

A lot of people wouldn’t feel comfortable having you at the other side of the door
whilst there having a shit
you could hear every thud grunt and splash not to mention the smell

BackinBlack24 · 16/11/2024 06:39

I always found it weird people doing makeup at work also cheeky your in work on the clock any applying makeup, unless you haven't clocked in before you do your makeup? I always got up that bit earlier to do what I needed to do before I left the house .

LilacLilyBird · 16/11/2024 06:41

When I get to work I do my make up in the car

I started doing my makeup in the bathroom at work but yes I realivery quickly that of course it's uncomfortable

No one wants to wee or poo when someone's hanging around around in the bathroom

Also i bloody hate it if people chat in the bathroom at work whilst I'm wanting to take a massive shit

I like to take my shit in peace especially in a shared communal bathroom which I hate and try to avoid at all costs if I can

LilacLilyBird · 16/11/2024 06:44

Well you've been asked not to so why not just respect their wishes and people's privacy to wee and poo in peace

The same reason they cant respect her wishes to do her makeup in peace. If you want complete privacy poo at home.

Rasputin123 · 16/11/2024 06:51

I think you should get up earlier and get fully ready for work at home i.e. do you make up or whatever else at home in your own time.

Otherwise where do you draw the line. During lockdown we had people nipping away from desks to have a shower, get changed, do hair, make and eat breakfast, make a sandwich, eat a sandwich, go to the post office, collect a food shop, collect a perscription (then they still announced they were finishing work an hour early as they hadn’t had an hours lunch break etc.

You have a choice about make up. You don't in general and especially with certain conditions about needing a toilet.

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 16/11/2024 07:03

i lock myself in the cubicle if I have to do make up. Usually takes 10 mins and there’s no issue with loo availability. Maybe do the same thing? Would love to be more organised but not always possible

A lot of people have other responsibilities of a morning. She’s going in before her shift and getting ready, much like anyone who cycles to work or goes to the gym before work. We dont have to “draw the line” anywhere because its her time to do with as she pleases.

what you’re describing is people taking the piss. I have no issue with myself or someone in the team taking 10 min break in office - no different from bumping into someone in the kitchen or the million other distracting things in the office. It’s often the people who go on about rules who are often a) the biggest time wasters when it comes to the actual work, pointlessly proliferating or blocking work or not working at pace and b) don’t have good independent business judgment. They never left school and like rules even though they are grown ass people.

She’s not stopping anyone using the toilet. If someone chooses not to use the toilet because someone else is in the bathroom thats a choice they have made. Other people being embarrassed about their basic bodily functions isn’t a reasonable reason to ask someone else not to use a public space.

VanillaPlanifolia · 16/11/2024 07:11

I don't like it if someone has all their stuff out and is taking up loads of room by the sinks.

But if they want to do their make up while I have a morning wee then fine. I imagine people with bowel issues or who had a particularly pungent meal the night before might feel a bit uncomfortable but really they shouldn't you've chosen to stand there while they shit.
