Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

1000 replies

Deadbeatex · 14/11/2024 18:30

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

You don’t have to like anything you don’t want to as long as you don’t go out of your way to hurt others or make offensive comments

Genuine question. Would it have been ok if when Barack Obama was elected and he was posing with his family if someone had said it was a "terribly black" scene?
I'm no fan of the royal family but how was saying about a family that it was a "terribly white balcony" in any way acceptable? Her comment was very offensive to many as if it wasn't acceptable for a family (in power) to be white. Everything else was incredibly reflective of our diverse society that day and rightly so but that was an abhorrent and ignorant thing to say. We really have become totally obsessed with race and it's saddening. The issue is it is causing divisions and resentment and we are actually going backwards in terms of inclusivity. So people aren't being racist when they are angry with the ad- they are angry with that woman and her offensive comment.

Unacceptable
Terribly white

Acceptable
"If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed."
"If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an airplane, or swims and is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it,"
“How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?”
“It looks as if it was put in by an Indian”

'that woman' was not wrong.

Yeah what a shocker, the British royal family are “terribly white”… in other news… the sheikhs of the UAE and Saudi Arabia are brown… the Japanese royal family are … Japanese.

Yes it is a staggeringly odd and irrelevant thing to comment on isn't it.

Santa Claus and Father Christmas are based on St Nicholas, a real person who is known for his secret gift giving
St Nicholas ( he wasn’t British ) is known as Sinterklaas and from that
Sinter = St and Klaas = Claus ……so Santa Claus

St Nicholas and hence Santa Claus have no connection to Christmas but their connection with gift giving meant there was and is a connection which is why we have him today.
Father Christmas is the father of Christs Mass and this has evolved over time and he is depicted in the same way as St Nicholas as a gift giver

Different countries use different names but all of the three above including St Nick are used as a guy visiting at Christmas with presents.

So basically, he was a real person

Oh crikey, you don’t want to be bringing up Sinterklass on this thread. The bishop who sails to the Netherlands from Spain with his white horse, and lots of ahem, helpers. Like elves, but supposedly covered in soot as they go up and down chimneys. That is why they are called black, allegedly. Children put their (empty) shoes in front of a fire place a few times a week in December, and if they are very good a ‘Zwarte Piet’ (one of the numerous ‘black Pete’ helpers) leave a little pressie therein. If a child is very bad, Sinterklass might pop them in a sack and bring them back with him to Spain. The ‘Zwarte Piets’ can be mischievous, and play tricks and get into trouble.

The arrival of Sinterklass’ ship is huge for children. Sinterklass arrives in different places, at different times, and is even covered on TV. Even adults exchange a Sinterklass pressie. Like a secret Santa, but with lots of thought of suitability, and apt poems/rhymes. It’s the thought and creativity, not the cost.

The whole Sinterklass story is most surely equally, if not even more believeable than the Santa counterpart.

Agree
Our German taught kids always put their shoes out at Christmas and the teachers put treats for when they arrived at school the next day.
Its a tradition we still do

Should people feel compelled to marry others with different coloured skin in order to comply and avoid name calling and racist comments.

Absolutely not. But that’s a lot of marrying relations…mind you, Harry tried someone not of his ‘class’ and not white and look what happened there

That’s a tricky one .
Im not condoning people who are rude to anyone but I am trying to work through how others may feel

many people are ‘offended by drag queens as they believe it makes a mockery of women’…..( I don’t agree but that’s my choice )
So to someone who believes someone is mocking them it’s probably difficult to be told they have to suck it up.

After all, mocking people is wrong.

Perhaps each ‘side’ need to steer clear of each other or at least respect each other’s opinion.

I agree especially as it's a more privileged and entitled group (men) mocking a very vulnerable one (women). Men have a lot of power and rights especially if they present as women. Women not so much. I completely see how it's the same as blackface. That said, I get that to some it's a light hearted entertainment . They're entitled to that view.

What I find weird is how it's considered problematic to not want to see drag on tv. It's an art form some enjoy and others don't . We don't consider it offensive if someone doesn't like opera ! I say that as a former trained classical mezzo soprano. If people don't like to see me warbling away in German or Italian, it's not discrimination. I'm not being abused or oppressed.

If someone isn't into drag, so what ? Some of us don't want to be an ally or a social justice warrior. Especially when no real injustice is being committed.

We thankfully live in a country where those who present as opposite sex are not denied their rights in any way shape or form.

Babush · 16/11/2024 20:51

I think the whole advert - from the actress chosen, the they/them pronouns and the drag queens - is just perceived as being a cacophony of wokeness, and wokeness is now under serious attack. The American election results have given more credibility to anti woke views.

This advert was probably planned last January. No retailer would go in with a very explicitly work advert in the current political climate.

Although I’m not aware anyone finds opera offensive or mocking to them personally, which some do of drag.
Although agree, it’s on TV just turn over,

Who thinks those comments are acceptable? They are disgusting. So because a dead person with a backwards attitude made vile remarks- she's allowed to say whatever she likes? Right ok then.
So all white families aren't ok and that's to be commented on is it?

Yeah it doesn't affect my life in any way. I hate Christmas adverts any way, they so lame. Oh I guess that's offensive too for some people but I'm not able bodied so it's ok for me to use that word!😁😂

Well, plenty of people did by their excusing away of it all.
I remember well comments like
"it's just banter"
"Ah, it's just the way he is, doesn't mean anything by it. Bless him" type comments at the time.

I still don't know what is wrong with the Boots advert. i will have to watch it again with a more critical eye.

I have re-watched on Youtube and still cannot see anything controversial. It's quite cheerful.

MirandaJH · 17/11/2024 00:58

ShinyOtter · 14/11/2024 18:42

That's different though. Drag queens aren't everybody's cup of tea, it's not comparable to racism or oppression.

How is transphobia or homophobia not comparable to racism? They are both forms of discrimination. People get killed for it everyday. Even in the U.K.
If you don’t like drag queens, don’t become one.

People may try to say they're not all comparable, but they are.
The arguments and "concerns" are identical for racism, homophobia and transphobia.
Whether it's by believing they're (they're being whichever bigotry you're subscribing to) colonising /taking over/coming for your kids - it's the exact same script and playbook.

@TofuTart I agree that the concerns are all similar.

The issue is that men (of any sexual persuasion or colour or race) turn out to be the dangerous ones.
So trans women ( as opposed to trans men) could be problematic given they are still men. I think the statistics also bear this out.
