Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

If you were just using an example you would have said "an African Royal Family (for example, King Mohammed VI)"

You said The African Family and gave the name. No where did you even hint to it being one example.

Yes,sorry about that, forgive me not saying the obvious 😒 I forget how clarified I need to be with some people.

BluebirdBoogie · 14/11/2024 20:54

The ad doesn't bother me but I boycott Boots anyway because they're yet another company that doesn't pay their proper UK taxes.

Men have the right to wear dresses or use whatever pronouns they like. Everyone else has the right to go along with it or not. As long as no one is actually harmed (and using or not using pronouns don't kill or harm) who cares? I'm more concerned about racism which does and has caused harm.

Occasionalsnaccident · 14/11/2024 20:55

It took me about 10 seconds to find and start playing on YouTube. I can’t believe you bothered to start a thread but not to watch it.

I’ve watched it twice to check if I could find anything to be offended about and still no. It’s a great ad.

I already wrote it upthread but nobody read it,so I wrote in capitals.

I thought she said something 'in the advert' and have seen it and was wracking my brain as to what she said that was so bad.

edwinbear · 14/11/2024 20:38

Nailed it. I’m far too busy this time of year to be looking for offensive in Christmas ads. My initial reaction was thank fuck Boots ‘gets it’ for the women, who are inadvertently doing the majority of the Christmas shopping.

I like an argument as much as the next anti woke person ( if not more) but this was just a glitzy Christmassy ad like any other.

If I was an older black woman I might be pissed off my demographic was stereotyped in the same box as other " misunderstood women" like the highly characterised trans/drag men.

Nikitaspearlearring · 14/11/2024 19:11

You'd need to ask Mrs Claus about that 😉

Perhaps they are in what used to be known as a “lavender marriage”?

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 20:46

Not being silly, merely observing the people who are having problems with the advert and their reasons for this.

"Too many black people on TV". Ok.

Who said too many black people? Not me. I said it was silly to say the reason people were boycotting Boots was due to having a woman of colour in the advert. I would say a very large percentage of adverts have people of colour in them, yet you’re saying people are targeting Boots for doing what most other companies are already doing with their TV adverts? It doesn’t make sense.

Jacopo · 14/11/2024 20:58
Kitty Demure nailed the drag queen issue. There is no good reason to normalise drag in tv adverts.

It's a bit cringey but not offensive at all. Those Twitter twits need to lighten up!

So if kate Winslet said the African royal family (king Mohammed vi) fir example were terribly black,it would be OK? Answer honestly.

The king of Morocco? Morocco with it's French colonial past?

This is why I'm saying it's a false equivalency.

You said "The amout of people of colour in adverts is way over the representative majority race in the UK.". How should this be interpreted if not 'too many black people on TV'?

Yes one is a historically oppressed minority and the other is a highly privileged group. Mostly neurodivergent and middle class. I'm neurodivergent and yes it has its own challenges for sure but I would call myself part of an oppressed group. And black comprises various different heritages and cultures. It's not something one can put on or take off like transvestitism or use of pronouns.

If your parents want to throw you out for being trans that is wrong but you have the option of waiting until age 18 to move out and dress how you want. If you're a victim of racism then you not only face physical abuse and harassment (which can happens if you're trans to be fair) but you can face discrimination in jobs, housing etc

Flumoxed · 14/11/2024 21:01

ColinOfficeTrolley · 14/11/2024 18:39

It's because the black woman who is in the advert, said that the royal balcony at one of their many tax payer shindigs, was too white.

Tommy Robinson type supporters got very offended by this, so are boycotting boots because this black woman is in the advert.

Pretty fucking pathetic when she was only stating the obvious.

I can't imagine Boots being too worried about losing out on Tommy Robinson's makeup order.

I think the people getting het up about black women and drag queens are more than likely old middle aged men who probably don't actually do much Christmas shopping in Boots anyway - will Boots really notice their boycott?

He's black though, yes? Answer the question,if kate Winslet said his family were "terribly black" it would be OK? Do you really believe that she wouldn't be cancelled in 3 seconds flat?

WhatterySquash · 14/11/2024 21:02

She said "terribly white" which is actually slightly ambiguous - for some posh people "terribly" isn't negative, as in "this is terribly good cake darling!"

But it can also mean it's a bad thing and tbh it did come across that way because she said it as if the previous setting's diversity was good and the balcony whiteness wasn't OK. I am no fan of the royals but I do find that pretty dim. It's a family, they're a white family, it's kind of what you would expect from the British royal family and it's not some kind of failing.

It was rude at best. But the trans shite is what pisses me off most. It's harmful nonsense and I'm sick of it. It's not because I con't cope with the fact that drag queens exist. It's because the same ideology that promotes all the they/themming and males taking over from women in ads is the same one that's promoting lying to and harming children and men invading women's sports and spaces. Just no, just stop pretending this is some kind of lovely wholesome progressiveness that is oh so cool and we all love.

If you don't get or can't see why gender ideology is causing harm then that's not because it's harmless, it's because you've fallen for the bullshit.

You said "The amout of people of colour in adverts is way over the representative majority race in the UK.". How should this be interpreted if not 'too many black people on TV'?

It says what it means - factually the amount of people of colour on adverts is way over the representation of the percentage in the UK overall. Still can’t see how that interprets as ‘there are too many black people on TV’….just pointing out in that context how silly it is to say people are boycotting Boots because there’s a woman of colour in their advert…..

SableOrGules · 14/11/2024 18:53

Are you allowed to boycott it not on the content of the advert but that Christmas is still weeks away and it's far too early?

😂 it's literally in next month, people are shopping for Christmas now. Kinda makes sense

PonkyPonky · 14/11/2024 21:06

I saw the advert just before I saw this thread and I thought it must be because Mrs Claus is wearing navy blue instead of red… it irked me but I think boycotting is a bit much 🤣

Who is keeping a tally of the number of black people in adverts, and why?

IdylicDay · 14/11/2024 21:09

BeatriceAndLottie · 14/11/2024 18:45

There’s a big difference in ‘not your cup of tea’ and getting openly offended by them appearing in an advert. From experience, the vast majority of drag queen haters also turn out to be casually homophobic

The vast overwhelming majority of drag queen haters are FEMINISTS who don't support misogyny and womanface.

Probably Tommy Robinson supporters just to stir the shit and whinge about too many black people on tv

If she said it about the King of Morocco then it would be offensive, because Moroccans on the whole don't regard themselves as black but Arabs. It would demonstrate the said actress's crass ignorance and thoughtlessness rather than racism.

Sawlt · 14/11/2024 21:11

JackieGoodman · 14/11/2024 18:36

Have googled, being boycotted as "Mrs Claus" is black so nope, will definitely not be boycotting

She’s the announcer who called the Royal family “terribly white” at Coronation …. it’s a fact yes. But calling another family
terribly black/brown/Jewish/lgbtq … would offensive to many as well.

She is controversial for that reason and of course the stereotypes of overly glam trans women

plenty of ire-causing crap for everyone to be offended
