Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

But the actress was racist. Towards white people. That's still racist! Any race can be racist, not just white people!

How was she racist?

Tryonemoretime · 14/11/2024 20:42

Anyway - personally, I think it's a really boring advert! It doesn't ring any (sleigh) bells for me and it hasn't made me want to shop there. I prefer our local Superdrug.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 18:34

As far as I can tell, people are upset because there's a black woman in it.

Don’t b3 silly. I would say the majority of TV adverts have people of colour in them, and people aren’t boycotting their advertised products. The amout of people of colour in adverts is way over the representative majority race in the UK.

So if kate Winslet said the African royal family (king Mohammed vi) fir example were terribly black,it would be OK? Answer honestly.

This tells me a lot about you. Africa is a continent. King Mohammed VI is not the King of Africa.

Hadn’t seen it so just watched it…

The main character is fabulous - great look, great skin, great hair…unfortunately that’s all let down by juxtaposing her with the pantomime dame element.

It certainly makes me think less of Boots as a brand. If they can’t celebrate their core demographic without misogynistic mimicry then I will go elsewhere.

It’s not a hardship though - their shops are run down and their website is so crap it’s virtually unusable.

Fully agree with all of this.

I was in Boots a couple of weeks ago and bought a no. 7 foundation. I couldn't believe the price of it! It had increased by around £6 from a year and a half ago. I'm going to spend my advantage points and then find a different brand from now on.

CaptainCallisto · 14/11/2024 20:43

Her original comment was taken completely out of context and misinterpreted. I don't think she was ever saying the Royal family were too white; she made the comment that there had been a lot of racial diversity in the Abbey and the parades, so the all-white balcony stood out in contrast. I interpreted it as a positive comment on the fact we've moved to a place in society where big royal events actually aren't all-white.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 14/11/2024 20:44

Apparently the actress in it said the royal family were all white. Or too white. Or something.
Which is a pretty accurate observation…..

I thought people were boycotting due the drag queen's. Men in dresses aren't everyone's cup of tea and it's always forced. The saying is go woke go broke, I think. Trans, drag etc on everything when the actual number of them is fairly small feels forced on everyone.

I guess it's a personal choice if you like it or not.

Not being silly, merely observing the people who are having problems with the advert and their reasons for this.

"Too many black people on TV". Ok.

Why the insult?

sommerjade · 14/11/2024 20:47

I like boots as they're always doing offers that appeal to me eg. 20% off online premium makeup brands.

But I've just learnt that boots are also tax dodgers like the daily mail, Amazon & Dyson which is very disappointing.

As for the Xmas ad.. well I don't even watch tv and if I did basically Mrs Claus is: A Fictional Character.!! So could be any colour skin. As are Santa & the elves.

I think there are dramatically more than three monarchies in Africa! There's probably about a 100 in Nigeria alone!

People on this site seem to love conflating drag/transvestisim with transgenderism Hmm

Does the difference matter though ? I can see the racism issue is a real thing that's a serious prejudice. Not liking trans people in tv is not the same thing. There hasn't needed to be a civil rights campaign for men who enjoy wearing dresses because it's not who they are. Anymore than liking crochet or rock climbing is an identity thing.

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 20:49

Nope,just using an example

If you were just using an example you would have said "an African Royal Family (for example, King Mohammed VI)"

You said The African Family and gave the name. No where did you even hint to it being one example.

Beaverbridge · 14/11/2024 20:51

I'm boycotting it on price. More expensive for everything. Savers for me. Clinique Aromatic Elixir, £30. Boots £92!!!!.

Exactly . It's not a human rights issue. Unlike racism.

I can't see an issue. Anyone who does, needs to get their head examined.
