Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

I don’t care enough to boycott Boots and didn’t know that the actress apparently made a racist comment, but I just found the advert a bit embarrassingly trying too hard to be woke and diverse in a way that doesn’t come across as natural.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2024 20:24

I think it might be useful to realise that most people's exasperation with this advert isn't rooted in bigotry though

You clearly aren't reading what is being said about it then if you think it's only a minority that are bigots.

The vast majority of people don't give a shiny shit what she said about the royal family either.

I'm not boycotting but Boots could have found someone else

Omg that’s very them that is how anyone would say about what someone likes I have heard that expressed that way before don’t think that has anything to do with pronouns as in trans etc

She says it straigth after "Oh she'll love that" so I guess we are suppose to infer that she is referring to somebody who identifies as non-binary.

Is the drag queen the one pulling the weird face holding the gift in the cover image? they are very shriekey and annoying and I thought they would turn out to be a villain character trying to ruin christmas

Littlemissgobby · 14/11/2024 20:25

Raquelos · 14/11/2024 20:22

Sure, you can feel that way if you want.

I think it might be useful to realise that most people's exasperation with this advert isn't rooted in bigotry though, and using that word to justify your response is problematic imo.

It's far too easy to just write off opinions we disagree with as bigotry without considering why people hold them. The world is so much more nuanced than "them bad" and, "me good" and throwing labels like bigot around allows us to justify shouting people down and labelling them as "to be ignored". It is surely much more constructive to listen to their reasons and consider why they feel that way than to assume it is because they are racist or anti drag queen.

I might possibly be channelling my distress at how this kind of tribal kneejerk response has fed into the shitshow in the US.

Well if you are going to be offended over a black woman and possibly drag queens I don’t care what the nuance is there is no reason to be particularly in the UK maybe not like the USA but the UK has a long history of drag queens in our entertainment so really it’s not like anything is New

Maybe instead of the stupid advert they could have better spent the money on getting some staff in their shops.

Quite! And now all those branches closing. Poor old Boots, they used to be a great shop. Infact - just remembered! - I worked for them in almost my first job. Saturdays in the baby department when I was doing my A levels. I remember it as being clean and calm and well organised, but now every branch feels a little bit dismal and the shelves and tills are filthy.

dawngreen · 14/11/2024 20:25

Its a John Lewis advert with some trans ppl, and coloured actors . They are getting Santa Claus job done, while he sleeps. People are saying its too woke that they are saying white guy is lazy.

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 20:22

What a complete non argument, what the actress said was racist.A white woman saying a black royal family was too black would be vilified and rightly so.

That is not what she said though:

“We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony,” she said in a conversation with presenters Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham.

JeIIyIegs · 14/11/2024 20:25

PandoraSox · 14/11/2024 20:19

Can you tell me in what way she was racist?

She said the Royal Family is too white. Can you imagine if a white person said the African Royal family was too black?

Is it really because of racists though? There are black people in other Christmas adverts? Or is it because it’s a rubbish advert?
I couldn’t care less about the people in it, their race or pronouns, I just think it’s boring for what Boots tend to do. I wouldn’t boycott over it, but I wouldn’t get my knickers in a twist over the opinions of others either.

Well, that’s not what she said. She was making out because they got rid of Megan which they did. It stopped being as diverse as it once was when Megan got married which is perfectly acceptable to say.

JassyRadlett · 14/11/2024 20:27

Mumofthreealldifferent · 14/11/2024 20:18

Why is it ‘right’ to say that a white family is too white? Would it be right to say that a black family is too black?

Can you point to the bit of the quote where she said those words?

Edited

You're going to need be here all night repeating this aren't you 😅

Lifeomars · 14/11/2024 20:27

I saw some bizarre nonsense about it on Twitter/X which I only skim read as I hardly bother with that cess pit these days, then saw the actual ad a few days ago and really liked it. Fast paced, stylish and great production. I have no idea what was supposedly offensive about it, I don't tend to shop in Boots but the ad made me think I might go in for a browse which surely is a testament to its skill

suburburban · 14/11/2024 20:27

It was fine. Yes I recycle with Boots and have ordered some items this week

Firms pay for adverts to sell things. It's not a public service to entertain us. If an advert doesn't sell things it's a failure. But why should we be offended if they waste their money? It's not for our benefit anyway, and I can't see why it's anyone's business but Boots if their advert is no good. Why on earth should anyone be annoyed with them if they miss their mark?

Personally, I generally record and fast-forward programmes anyway.

dawngreen · 14/11/2024 20:28

Oh its boots

Soukmyfalafel · 14/11/2024 20:28

ColinOfficeTrolley · 14/11/2024 18:39

It's because the black woman who is in the advert, said that the royal balcony at one of their many tax payer shindigs, was too white.

Tommy Robinson type supporters got very offended by this, so are boycotting boots because this black woman is in the advert.

Pretty fucking pathetic when she was only stating the obvious.

Oh well, I'm sure the men boycotting have no need for condoms anyway.

OK,so change white to black,said by a white woman."Terribly black" doesn't sound great,does it?

Tina159 · 14/11/2024 20:29

I think AA is fabulous in it but the advert is drearily woke, 'oh that's very them' really?? Stop indulging the attention seeking nonsense.
I'm not going to boycott Boots over a silly advert.

Oakcupboard · 14/11/2024 20:29

Just went to watch it, what on earth is wrong with it? I really like the ad

As someone who's aunt is very much sharing hundreds of posts. It's very much race related

edwinbear · 14/11/2024 20:30

To add, that whilst I don’t work in marketing, I’d be fairly certain that if it has caused such a stir that #boycottboots is trending on Twitter/X, it’s got its own MN thread, media are discussing it etc. The marketing teams work is done. All publicity is good publicity etc. Be interesting to know how many Google hits ‘Boots Christmas ads’ has on Google. I’ll bet it’s more than John Lewis.
