What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

North London where schools are mixed with a lot of different backgrounds there isn’t a set of uniform but I’ve noticed mums in Central London schools usually in black leggings or tights, jumper or polo shirt and long coats or canada goose parkas and expensive high knee boots or new balance trainers.

fiorentina · 14/11/2024 18:10

Adanola/Sweaty Betty/Lulemon leggings, sweatshirt, white socks and trainers. Puffer coat. But most aren’t exercising!

hashisucks · 14/11/2024 18:14

@Wrennie4 haha I know exactly where you are, I’m just slightly further out 😆

I8toys · 14/11/2024 18:14

Those massive long duvet coats/gilets, leggings and socks pulled up to their knees and trainers. Cockpoo/Labradoodle/Pugachiwawa (I made that one up) with a coat. North Yorkshire

Wigglywoowho · 14/11/2024 18:14

Pajamas or sportswear

tommyhoundmum · 14/11/2024 18:16

What is a dry robe please?

Lifeomars · 14/11/2024 18:17

I am in a poor inner city with a primary school at the end of my street, lots of Muslim mums in traditional dress, some white British mums in track suits and padded coats with a messy bun and Roma mums in long skirts, cork wedges, thick socks and cardigans. Kids all looking very well turned out in uniform

🙄 it’s the Style and Beauty topic.

No it isn't, it's AIBU.
Unroll those eyes.

babyproblems · 14/11/2024 18:20

Just wear what you like op. I can’t stand the leggings/uggs look. Or ‘nude’ toned cheap clothing. It looks horrific on everyone. Anything else is fine imo!

VegTrug · 14/11/2024 18:27

I live on the edge of the Yorkshire dales in North Yorkshire so it varies massively. A lot of farmers' wives in wellies/muck boots & gilets, but also we've had a massive wave of families with southern/London/Essex area accents (ie: bloody loud accents) over the past 3/4 years and they've brought their southern mum uniforms up! They really do look ridiculous and stand out like a sore thumb!

It is a posh town but in a slightly more refined way than wherever these people come from. So their designer labels being blasted all over their clothes like NEW BALANCE & COACH etc whilst walking round in trainers it just looks bloody awful and screams credit card.

Better that those in Sheffield who arrive in PJs lol

Nevermind91 · 14/11/2024 18:31

Here, it's either wellies, jeans and knitted cardigan, or trainers, those "sports" leggings (that look like they've been painted on) and baggy t-shirt.

Puzzled by mums who didn’t exercise? What based off the fact they didn’t wear gym clothes for school drop off?

how bizarre that you’ve decided they don’t exercise or would judge someone that may not be able to!!!

I think she means she is puzzled by Mums wearing gym gear without exercising.

peanutmother · 14/11/2024 18:36

Ours is:

Sweaty Betty leggings

Socks pulled up

Trainers - usually New Balance

Long line puffa coat

Thwre are a few dry robe / hiking boots types with dogs

Forgottenwhatitwas · 14/11/2024 18:45

I live in a very wealthy home counties area and everyone just rolls in wearing whatever, unbranded leggings/ jeans/joggers and a jumper/coat...so ordinary casual clothes 🤔 no idea what's going on in the city....or Yorkshire apparently.

East London -
sweaty Betty leggings, nike air max, full length puffer (Lululemon preferable but cos acceptable).
OR
Boden frock, ankle boots, sensible coat.

We tend to be creatives or legal / charity

laraitopbanana · 14/11/2024 18:52

I felt off the wagon style 🤣🤣

Wigglytails · 14/11/2024 18:54

Hilarious.

city - sambas with chunky knits and possible botox!
shires in the country - horsey boots / gilets and expensive looking earrings
dorset / Somerset / Devon - long flowy skirts on slender hips!
Scotland and Ireland - every mum loves a great scarf!

we’re all fabulous anyway so if a uniform makes us feel part of a tribe it’s okay. 👍🏻

Xmasxrackers · 14/11/2024 18:56

Sliders with Nike socks. Gilet over a sweatshirt, black leggings, Botox and filler

They wear clothes. And shoes. A coat if it's cold.

I find posts like this really fascinating, having had two children but never done 'school runs', I have also now stopped doing the occasional grandchild school run. Most of what I saw on the latter was normal clothes according to the weather/season, do people really study the type, make etc of other women's clothes and find it important? Don't they have lives to live?

When posters are saying dry robes do they actually mean this type of thing?

Yes.
