What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

It take it to mean a co-ord set something like this

Mums at my DD's primary school can be seen in pyjamas, leggings with fluffy slippers, sweater dress and full makeup, tunic from their care job/Home Bargains job, smart casual for a professional office, running gear because they are going for a run on the way home.

Mumlife871 · 14/11/2024 17:41

black gym leggings, sports socks over the leggings, new balance trainers, oversized adanola hoodie and a long puffer coat!

state school - rainbows, reds or dyed black … v few natural, v few blonds

In our area, very woke neighbourhood in the Southside of Glasgow, the majority of parents look like they have been vomited out of the second hand shop in mismatched clothes, ankle length baggy trousers, dirty trainers and usually a bright beanie. Their kids look the same and don't know what a hairbrush looks like.

Thursdaygirl · 14/11/2024 17:44

I should probably know this but: how is ‘Shein’ pronounced? Is it Shine or Sheen? Or something totally different?

pyjamas and dressing gowns?? 😂😂

Heavens to Betsy!

There's one near me that did swimsuit and flip flops, walking to school, pushing baby in pram. Wouldn't mind if we were in Padstow... but ummm... Greater Manchester...🙄

CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair · 14/11/2024 17:46

In Liverpool there seems to be a trend of very casual clothes (workout gear that’s very tight, leggings and hoodies, tracksuits, occasional PJs) but full makeup, hair beautifully done or in rollers and about half of the women I see have obscenely overfilled lips and huge lashes.

walking along the streets of suburban manchester in just her swimsuit?! I'd have done a double, triple, quadruple take at that!

RareMaker · 14/11/2024 17:48

Rural suffolk:

Lots of skinny jeans still
Work uniform (supermarkets/care work)
Suits
Joggers

A real mix

Greeneyegirl · 14/11/2024 17:49

A lot of workout leggings, socks, chunky trainers and sweatshirts
OR
wide leg/straight leg jeans, tight tops, cardies/jumpers with sambas

BlackberrySky · 14/11/2024 17:51

SW London - Sweaty Betty leggings and a gilet, or slim fit jeans and a North Face puffer. Long hair, worn down. Unnecessary wearing of sunglasses!

myladybelle · 14/11/2024 17:52

Leggings and t-shirt if warm; leggings and sports sweater if cold. Leggings and puffer jackets if very cold. Literally 90% of mums.

Someone said "ooooh you look smart" when I wore super standard work pants and a cotton top from m&s.

MogTheSillyCat · 14/11/2024 17:52

In the NW. The primary school is in an affluent area, if that makes a difference.

It’s a mixed bag here. Some mums in work uniforms, quite a few work for the nhs. Some smart, office type outfits. Also lots in active wear, leggings, hoodies, really long or cropped puffer type jackets and trainers.

I’m not sure what the aversion is to people wearing gym gear though?
It’s very comfy & practical. Lots of people walk to school round here, me included (20 min walk)
I sometimes wear jeans but it’s way more comfortable wearing my gym leggings.
I do a fast walk on the way home from pick up with toddler dc in the buggy…do I get a pass to wear gym leggings?🤨

Not suburban Manchester; sort of a "village" in the Greater Manchester area...But most people are either sporty or horsey here, it's generally either leggings or jeans even in summer, so it was a shocker, yeah. She had the flicky hair pouty lips thing going. Probably a hot tub in the garden...

Didimum · 14/11/2024 14:54

They wear clothes. And shoes. A coat if it's cold.

🙄 it’s the Style and Beauty topic.

ChaosHol1 · 14/11/2024 18:00

No I wouldn't say there is here it's a total mix what people wear and defo haven't noticed a "uniform".

usunderthemoon · 14/11/2024 18:02

I haven’t noticed a uniform by me either really. Lots of mums with leggings and jumpers but also mums with jeans and shirts, it doesn’t seem dissimilar to the general population.

We are in an area with a very mixed bag of families - we don't have the Country Set (the school down the road has children that own ponies!) but we have the woke and the actual working families. The families on NMW brush their children's hair and put in lovely bows and the children wear clean white socks. The woke do not, and often don't send their children to school (I assume it's interfering with their little psyches to get up in the morning) but instead attend forest home ed school with twigs pre-applied to their hair.

superplumb · 14/11/2024 18:02

Very mixed where I am. Some obviously have money but very understated, some wearing dirty tracksuits with a fag out their mouth, some heavy make up and wither very dark dyed hair or very light almost white and not forgetting the bright yellow boden coats

APurpleSquirrel · 14/11/2024 18:02

Rural Somerset at a very tiny rural village primary school- no 'uniform'. We have farmers in mud splattered clothes & wellies, through casual leggings & jeans, to corporate office wear, & sports/gym clothes. Various ages & occupations.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/11/2024 18:04

Most kids get the bus to school so I’ve no idea what other people wear.

Kentucky83 · 14/11/2024 18:05

I wouldn't have a clue! I couldn't tell you a single thing about what other parents wear when I see them on school drop off or pick up but it seems that this is really a thing?

Bear2014 · 14/11/2024 18:08

SE London here. I hope people aren't paying too much attention to what I'm wearing as I WFH and look like a bag lady most of the time.

Plenty of Sweaty Betty, leggings, puffer coats, also mum jeans and some dungarees. A few dry robes as we have a lido nearby. Sausage dogs seem the dog of choice for our particular school!
