What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

I live in one of the two areas you mention OP, and don’t recognise this at all. It’s a really eclectic mix of people at our school (state school, lots of different cultural backgrounds too). Are your kids at a private school or something? I can’t imagine why you’d have such a homogeneous bunch at the gate!

The first one is how I dress 😂
But most of the mums I see are wearing active wear! Can't stand active wear unless you are at the gym

Edited

Most moms in our area go to gym/ for a hike/ tennis after drop off so pretty much everyone is in leggings etc.

Weird that dry robes are actual clothes now? Used to see them a lot in Portobello because people were swimming in the sea. Seems like a weird choice for a coat otherwise.

I have just been bought one for my birthday, mainly for standing on the side lines watching DS play rugby as it always seems to be wet and windy!
They are very warm and wind/waterproof so I think that's why they are making their way over to general coat wear as they are actually quite versatile. Haven't worn mine on the school run yet but can't guarantee it won't happen!

Affluent area round here and everyone is wearing

New balance trainers with pulled up socks
Gym leggings
Longline puffs coats
And I'm increasingly seeing the dry robe coats, usually the camo prints one. I really not into these coats, but they do look warm and comfy.

Same here. Affluent city suburb. Also huge lips and a dog seem to be obligatory.

VanillaPlanifolia · 14/11/2024 16:55

Office wear or tracky bottoms

OP interested in your observation! I'm in Highgate and agree with the description of the mum uniform...however, I dress much more like a Finchley mum going on your description 😂

It's not the clothes. It's the strange tribes, and the bizarre level of conformity to those tribes.

I've lived in London most of my adult life and have never noticed this - it's the sort of thing I used to read about periodically in the ES magazine and think it was a load of bollocks.

Gothamcity · 14/11/2024 17:03

Huge mix of actual clothing here at our hook gates in the S.W, but the general consensus for footwear is Crocs. There's a sea of brightly coloured rubbery clogs as far as the eye can see at pick up. I fucking love it... Makes it look like we're part of some weird cult.
And before you knock them, I used to be a Croc hater, but once you slide your feet into that little spongey cushion of heaven, you'll never wear a normal shoe again.

One of us... One of us...

Also people checking out other people's clothing and commenting on it is by no means restricted to London.

Also I would say in Highgate, a LOT of lulumelon leggings/gymwear even for those who are not exercising - which (whisper it) personally I find very unstylish and dull!

Agree that the dry robe coats are more of a Dartmouth Park thing - probably because of ponds...

Blarn · 14/11/2024 17:08

A mix of smart office wear; jeans and a warm coat and unshowy trainer or pair o docs; those fabric sock trainers, leggings and a long puffer coat minus sleeves. Bit of a mixed area in Birmingham.

OneTC · 14/11/2024 17:08

There's a mix of gorpcore (posh ones) and gym/sports wear (unposh ones)

DonnaSummet · 14/11/2024 17:08

Swetty Betty leggings or Mom Jean and sweatshirt combo... long duvet coat, highlighted hair.. minimal make up, a permanently harassed look and driving a fuck off car.

Lellamir · 14/11/2024 15:21

Ha. I was just as just about to Google that!

Glad I'm not the only one who had to Google a few of these😅

Shittyproblem · 14/11/2024 17:18

Some Mums turn up at our village school (H.C.) in PJs, dressing gowns & hair in rollers.
Not a good look.

Cherrysoup · 14/11/2024 17:23

Leggings/hoodie/sweatshirt/trainers, north London suburb/commuter area.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 14/11/2024 17:27

Too old for the school run now but I still have my dark yellow Joules raincoat and a selection of quirky scarves!
I reckon one day when we were at the Zoo I must have seen a dozen women wearing similar coloured coats.

I still wear the coat, the scarves not so much!

terriblyangryattimes · 14/11/2024 17:29

Here (school is just off the beach and bloody cold 6 months of the year) it's long jumpers, leggings, socks on top and generally boots as the lanes are muddy and we all have to walk to the gate. Mostly long coats, dry robes and a grim expression. Lots of horsey types in yard wear and a few in gym stuff.

MovingDilema · 14/11/2024 17:30

Genuine question, what’s a shein set???

Scrimt · 14/11/2024 17:33

Thefaceofboe · 14/11/2024 15:46

My kids aren’t school age yet but the theme in our local school is pjs and dressing gowns. Absolutely baffles me why they can’t just chuck leggings and a hoody on

pyjamas and dressing gowns?? 😂😂

Heavens to Betsy!

SunQueen24 · 14/11/2024 17:36

I fit in perfectly with my gym leggings and Nike new balance. I do only wear gym stuff though when I’m going to the gym - although that’s everyday and I WFH so I wear my gym gear all the time.

I’ve noticed alot of cycle shorts recently. On some larger women, I get they’re comfy but they’re not very flattering.

Some dry robes too but they’re so practical I can see the appeal.

bookworm60 · 14/11/2024 17:39

A gran here in a village in Warwickshire - couldn’t tell you what I was wearing for the school run most days never mind about anyone else! (As long as it’s clean and suitable for the prevailing weather)

OneTC · 14/11/2024 17:08

My direct debit to the gym is over £400
PCM with PT sessions and the kids membership. Can’t believe I don’t qualify as posh. Outraged.
