What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

Sweaty Betty, dry robes or long puffas, white socks with adidas sambas or Birkenstock bostons, Botox - Essex

This is so weird that people notice. Were in a tiny village school in the Midlands countryside and the variety is huge. I always wearing leggings, hoodie, sports socks and trainers/crocs with my duvet coat 🤣 I must say, I've never seen a grown woman around here in a pair of dungarees though. Age usually plays a part in what people wear, we have a lot of grandparents doing the school run.

came here to write this. Never noticed what anyone is wearing on the school run....as far as I'm aware all different things depending on where the person is going after.

I'm very conflicted with this one, I don't want to be a sheep but this look looks so comfortable especially for winter. I feel myself being drawn to it😄

I gave in and 100% recommend- I'm so comfy, warm and snuggly 😂😂

soberfabulous · 14/11/2024 16:15

I'm on my way to work so it's always corporate clothes: I am very much in the minority.

I couldn't be more judgemental about anyone who looks at or cares what someone wears on the school run, or who plans what to wear. themselves. PLANS clothes! For the school run!! Literally the most bland chore in your day!! The school run!! Where you meet people who are literally nothing to you, not your friends, family or colleagues! (Unless you are friends, in which case they won't care).

Any normal person would be wearing precisely. whatever they were wearing before - comfy stuff if wfh, office clothes if at work, a lovely frock if you'd just been to lunch...

It's like caring what you wear to nip to the corner shop or put the bins out. Someone who looks put together, on purpose, for the school run, and hasn't just come from somewhere else, must truly be the most tragic of persons, with the tiniest little life.

There, I've got that mean spiteful opinion off me chest :)

But on the days you go out looking ropey, you will run into YOUR ENEMY looking glamorous! Guaranteed.

I guess I learned what a dry robe is today. My mother would sometimes be in her coat over pyjamas when she dropped me off at school, LOL. In rural Lincolnshire….barbour jackets, jeans, jumpers, sturdy tall leather boots…have occasionally seen riding gear. Farmers’ wives have nice haircuts and manicures.

Cakegoddesss · 14/11/2024 16:16

No longer do school run but walk past school on way to tube station (West London).

I notice puffa jackets, with and without sleeves and leggings. That’s about it but must pay more attention. No-one wears dungarees or anything too kooky or trying to be unique that I’ve noticed.

Definitely dress differently to central London folk, even on a weekend.

I think she means the ones who wore gym gear but didn’t exercise?

Edited

How would she know they don't exercise? Even if they don't, some people just find it comfortable don't they? Not everyone drives everywhere. I walk all over, and wear sports leggings sometimes, if somebody judges me they can f* right off. I'm fit and active.

They wear clothes. And shoes. A coat if it's cold.

This 😄 they’re not one homogenous group so this is the only way to group them so.

Also how you can tell if someone exercises or works by what they wear at the school gates is quite the skill!

Maria1979 · 14/11/2024 16:33

I just realised I haven't noticed! But if my DH had done the school run he surely would have noticed because he's very observant and likes to dress well and also watches how other people dresses. I make sure I'm clean and proper but I tend to think practical: dress in the summer and jeans jumper rest of the time. Nothing that draws attention.

Maria1979 · 14/11/2024 16:36

Just looked up dry robe and I have never seen anyone in that, that's for sure! Would have noticed because I would have wondered if they were going out fishing.

No bra, neon visor, Barbour wellies and a pair of hot pants.

Mymanyellow · 14/11/2024 16:38

Stockings and suspenders. Pink cowboy hat.

BoudiccasBangles · 14/11/2024 16:43

Rab down jacket, jeans, wellies, or leggings, DMs and long gilet. Rural mid-Wales. Edited to add that I wear candy stripe or animal dungarees. They’re always commented on 😂

tfresh · 14/11/2024 16:44

Where are people still wearing dry robes? That was the biggest flash in the pan I can remember. Utterly awful things

Here is leggings (lululemon, alo, etc), designer sneakers or boots , cashmere/brand tops and nice jackets (moncler, Canada goose, etc). Hair varies- anything from messy buns to fresh blow dries

Very popular in beach areas - with swimmers, surfers.
Also great for dog walking, watching kids footie etc.
Nothing gets through them so gret if its really rainy/windy etc - & large rnough to go over any outfit you might have on.

They are practical clothing rather than a fashion item

mitogoshigg · 14/11/2024 16:49

Dry robes, helly Hanson sailing jackets or fleeces (any brand though Patagonia is popular) from my observations of the stay at home crowd however most parents are both working so if they are in the office it's office wear (whatever that means) if they are health care it's seasalt dress central and so on. My dc are adults but I'm a people watcher and help a neighbour out sometimes.

Huge mix here, but dry drobes are popular as is fitness wear with white socks pulled up over gym shark leggings with expensive trainers and a designer gilet!

mitogoshigg · 14/11/2024 16:50

Should add school is beside a marina and wild swimming is big!
