What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

London is weird

leia24 · 14/11/2024 14:29

Um my mum uniform at primary school was always office wear with a coat because I was going to work

Very different here in Greater Manchester 😂 most of the mums at DS school gates are in either black leggings, dry robes and New Balance or a Shein two piece set.

Today I’m in a grey sweatshirt, black straight leg jeans and Birkenstock Boston’s though might have to put my DMs on for pick up as it’s chilly this afternoon!

minipie · 14/11/2024 14:30

Much more what you describe as Highgate style here, Wandsworth. Lots of exercise gear too (whether actually exercising or not).

The Finchley version is what people would wear for Prize Day or similar, or if they’ve been at work - but wouldn’t be a floral dress if work.

DieStrassensindimmernass · 14/11/2024 14:31

There's no mum uniform here, folk just wear what works for them.

Sound London suburb mum here. All in long puffa coat eg the football coach look. Plain boots from M&S. no make up and messy bun.
its not a glamorous look which is nice as no pressure

ladygindiva · 14/11/2024 14:33

dm ankle chelsea boots, leggings or mom style jeans and a jumper. Occasional dry robe ( Cornwall)

Toomanysquishmallows · 14/11/2024 14:33

North east London , shein sets and track suits or jeans and stripy tops . I also see. Fair bit of gym wear .

comedycentral · 14/11/2024 14:33

Not really, it's a mix of parents on the school run. I see work outfits, gym wear, it's generally pretty casual. Is it mostly mums dropping off at your school? We have a mix of parents and grandparents where I am.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 14/11/2024 14:33

Hahaha, I don't live in either but have friends in both and what you describe is what I imagine it to be 😂

Huge mix at DSs (state) school in the Home Counties. Lots of Adanola and Lululemon currently (as well as cheaper leggings/sweatshirt looks) lots of giant 'Football mum' coats and long sporty socks with trainers.

WaveChaser · 14/11/2024 14:34

My children have gone onto secondary now, but there was a big group of Mums (who were all friends) who wore gym wear everyday in primary. I was always a little puzzled by the ones who didn't exercise.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/11/2024 14:35

Very very tight workout leggings
New balance trainers in pale/nude colours
Long duvet coats
Dry robes
Office wear

I am by far one of the scruffiest mums as I have usually walked a muddy Labrador twice and worked from home all day by the time I pick up from school. Dh does the morning drop off.

@LittleRedRidingHoody Interesting, any theories why?

Puzzled by mums who didn’t exercise? What based off the fact they didn’t wear gym clothes for school drop off?

how bizarre that you’ve decided they don’t exercise or would judge someone that may not be able to!!!

Lola247 · 14/11/2024 14:41

When posters are saying dry robes do they actually mean this type of thing?

I think she means the ones who wore gym gear but didn’t exercise?

I think that’s what people mean, although there are some very expensive brands.

I’ve only seen people (in London) wearing them around Hampstead Heath / Tufnell Park, although pretty sure they’re not actually going for a swim in the ponds which are now heaving with tourists anyway - more just that they want that, I do wild swimming, look

Nice Manchester suburb and its a real mix! Mostly smart casual though and v few leggings or Shein sets! We are a crunchy area so lots of people on electric bikes etc!

Lola247 · 14/11/2024 14:50

Also want to know how I can identify a shein set?

Planesmistakenforstars · 14/11/2024 14:50

Pyjamas, dry robes, pit bull accessories.
