What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

Well here in suburban West London I no longer do the school run, they’ve been walking themselves for 3 years, but I really can not remember any details whatssoever of what mums wore at the school gate! And I’m pretty sure if you asked me 4 years ago the answer would be the same. Do they really all wear the same? We had such a mix, ages 25 to 55, muslim dress, leggings, jeans, smart suits, work uniforms, maybe pyjamas according to the newspapers!

SugarIsHardtoAvoid · 14/11/2024 15:15

Whatever I am wearing to work that day. There definitely isn’t a mum uniform I’ve noticed.

Scutterbug · 14/11/2024 15:15

Warwickshire here and anything seems to go!

mynameiscalypso · 14/11/2024 15:15

West London. Probably about half athleisure-ware but 'nice' stuff. The rest is a mix between workwear, often quite smart, and a pretty relaxed vibe. Cropped wide leg jeans + boots + cashmere is a fairly typical outfit and, indeed, what I wore to drop off DS this morning. Even in gym stuff, most people are on the smarter side of casual.

MrsSunshine2b · 14/11/2024 15:16

SD's school in Bucks, full of older yummy mummies. Hunter wellies, Barbour jackets, jeans, Range Rover, giant diamond next to wedding ring. I was at least 15 years younger than most of them and do not own any of those items.

Round here, they all seem to be around 21 and wear leggings and giant hoodies.

NewNameNoelle · 14/11/2024 15:18

It’s mixed at my school:

The country ones are: F and F knee boots, tucked in jeans or short skirts with tights, cashmere jumper, tweedy fitted jacket, blow dry or nice messy bun.

The gym gear ladies: usually bright colours, usually lulu lemon

The going to the office ladies: wide legged trousers, silk blouses or cashmere, proper wool coat, nice bag

Others: mostly jeans (wide leg), cashmere jumper, adidas suede trainers in a coord colour, wool coat. Very occasionally; flowery dress, oversized jumper, ankle boot, messy hair.

Cool city mums: all black usually with jeans, black DM style boots, sharp haircut which is then roughed up a little.

dads: usually chinos or jeans, smart trainers or boots, shirt, jumper, jacket or proper coat

No pyjamas, track suits, puffers, black leggings, dungarees, boxy quilted coats, walking or outdoor clothes, fleeces, lounge wear.

An oldie but a goodie - hope this is OK to post. My DS is well into secondary now but I remember having friends who were genuinely puzzled by the number of mums in their active wear back in primary 😂

I’m rural and many of the mums are from the farming community so mostly practical clothes with muddy wellies or boots.

We don’t care about pointless things like keeping up with the Jones’s around here. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

What's a Shein Set? Is it a track suit type of thing?

usernother · 14/11/2024 15:21

There is no mum uniform here. Everyone wears what they want to. I wonder why Londoners are so conformist.

Ha. I was just as just about to Google that!

Weali · 14/11/2024 15:22

Just normal mix of clothes, jeans, trackies, suits/workwear etc and warm coats.

70sShmeventies · 14/11/2024 15:23

It’s a mixture here:

Lucy and yak/straight/wide leg jeans/paragonia/carharrt/Barbour/vivo barefoot/DMs/merry people

Shein/leggings with hoodies and tube socks/longline puffers/new balance

white stuff/mountain warehouse/insert other practical and inexpensive clothing brand

no one looks too ‘done’ though; heaven forbid.

London is weird

Haha first comment has it.

GroovyChick87 · 14/11/2024 15:24

Dry Robe, leggings and Crocs with sports socks pulled up high over the hem of the leggings. Awful. That's North West.

ttcat37 · 14/11/2024 15:25

Locals generally in work wear or country daily clothes (jeans, wellies, fleece), townies who have moved into the village seem to favour dressing like fishermen

Isitfridayyetsophie · 14/11/2024 15:25

Another West London. So much Anine Bing. All pushing bugaboos with the odd babyzen yoyo. I recognise a fair few wyse shirts too, in this weather the collars are poking out of the knitwear. Fair amount of athleisure. I still see quite a few people golden gooses around, which is surprising. Loads of adidas sambas. The dads are all in Patagonia. These parents are often found in babboe style cargo bikes.

I love handbags so I’m always eyeing them up and a few of the mums at nursery have mini balenciaga city bags, its own microtrend and it’s made me want one!

Recent influx of women carrying the lulu Guinness Waitrose shopper.

Aberentian · 14/11/2024 15:25

Weird that dry robes are actual clothes now? Used to see them a lot in Portobello because people were swimming in the sea. Seems like a weird choice for a coat otherwise.

Clearingaspace · 14/11/2024 15:26

My kids are at second now but we live very close to a primary and everyone wears what they want. This is in London!

Mizztikle · 14/11/2024 15:26

Not just a mom thing but in my area there seems to be a mild obsession with North Face jackets, there everywhere.

That is hilarious!

Blundstones are the best - accept no sneers!

Swimsuits and Dryrobes around here (Kent coast)

in visible swimsuits? Thats nuts, takes no effort to throw trackies over the top.

Also want to know how I can identify a shein set?

I just googled it as i didn't know either.
When i did school runs i just wore clothes but I've just realised that my utter lack of interest in fashion is fairly unusual. It genuinely doesn't occur to me to look at what other people are wearing.

Caerulea · 14/11/2024 15:28

crackofdoom · 14/11/2024 14:54

I literally came on to say that EVERY fucker including me wears DM Chelsea boots at the school gates in Cornwall 😆

Chunky Fly biker style boots for me, so pretty much the same thing. It's all about comfort at the school gates in Cornwall, I don't think ppl give much of toss about dressing up for it & I'm thankful for that!

ThianWinter · 14/11/2024 15:30

I live by the coast and the only Dryrobe wearers are the wild swimmers, surfers and paddle boarders. Do people seriously wear them as coats? I thought they were a changing gown/towel combo for the sea loving crowd.
