Heard the one about Racist Dogs in Wales

Horrace · 14/11/2024 13:11

Been trying to copy links from the Telegraph and various other news outlets but failing miserably with my phone so any help much appreciated.

Anyway, it seems the Welsh Labour government are trying to create dog free zones to make Wales less racist or something along those lines.
The more I read it, the less sense it makes. Not that it made any sense to begin with.
Any Welsh mumsnetters with racist dogs?
Could you send your dog on a course to be less racist like we have to in our places of work.

See this is the sort of thing that pisses me off. Non white = not a monolith.

I JUST got back from a break with the dogs in Anglesey ironically. Many people in my family (British Indian Sikhs) have dogs.

We are in the UK. We are an animal loving country. For goodness sake! I didn’t go to Dubai and get upset I couldn’t get a bacon sarnie. Or wear shorts in the 45c temperature.

Edited

Read the fucking article- it has nothing to do with Muslims having an issue with dogs or how well you do respecting other cultures.

Staffy's are very middle-class dogs these days.

The gammonati have moved on to bigger status dogs.

Yes, the best-behaved dogs in my neighbourhood are the staffies. Lovely dogs.

It's cane corsos and those Belgian shepherds you have to be wary of around here. Oh, and the very many savage middle-class sausage dogs that always seem to be spoiling for a fight!

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 14/11/2024 13:40

Dog free areas sound like a very good idea, but I don't see what race has to do with it.

stickygotstuck · 14/11/2024 13:41

Eraserbread · 14/11/2024 13:32

Well yes, so why didn't they just set up some dog-free zones instead of making it about race? It's just going to inflame the types who are most likely to be racist anyway, no?

Quite. That is exactly my point.

Dog free zones = good
Relating it to race = not good

Simonjt · 14/11/2024 13:43

Ah, so angry racist tiktokers wil now be boycotting both boots and Wales, I’m sure Welsh people are extremely upset that there will be fewer racists at tourist attractions.

where do I directly say anything about this scheme being in connection to Muslims?

My example of not eating bacon sarnies in Dubai relates to the point that individuals should respect and accept the cultural norms of a country.

Exactly!

They should probably be very careful about which places they make dog-free too. Our local beach was made dog-free and the decision was very quickly reversed when the local businesses started losing money (dog walkers are there in all weathers), and so many of the locals complained!

Horrace · 14/11/2024 13:48

Do u think they were stoned when they came up with the idea.

Why on earth didn't someone with half a brain say "come on now lads, good effort but go home, have a sleep on it and come sober and try again"

My dog is Welsh and can be a bit breedist. She is not a fan of a chihuahua.

What's happening at Boots? I've clearly missed something. I know they're closing stores.

It's because of their dreadful Christmas advert.

EdgyDreamer · 14/11/2024 13:54

https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1975825/labour-told-ban-dogs-wales-racism

The report, put together by Climate Cymru BAME, suggested setting up “dog-free areas in local green spaces” as a way to help achieve these goals.
The proposal is part of a broader set of recommendations but does not clarify how dog-free zones would help address racism.

....
In addition to Climate Cymru BAME, the North Wales Africa Society also called for dog-free areas, claiming that some ethnic minority residents feel uneasy around dogs.
During focus group sessions, one Black African woman reportedly expressed feeling unsafe in areas with dogs.

...
The report also identified other barriers to enjoying outdoor spaces, such as the lack of public transport to rural areas, poor air quality in cities, and perceptions that gardening and allotment spaces are dominated by “middle-aged white women.”
Other comments from ethnic minority participants included feeling apprehensive about visiting the countryside due to their racial or religious identity.

I'm all for improving public transport to rural locations in Wales - it is an issue we've had living in Wales and I'm all for looking at anything that makes anyone feel unwelcome in countryside as well - and very in favour of improving air quality in cities especially welsh city I live in.

Not sure though that the local allotments are dominated by white middle class women - seems to be more retried men here.

While I'm not against dog restricted areas but really would like an explanation on how they'll help and how that would be monitored for effectiveness before making it harder for a section of population to enjoy green spaces and countryside.

Labour told to ban dogs from parts of UK to rid country of racism

Conservatives called the proposals "completely out of touch" and said Labour is "stuck on yesterday's thinking".

So the Welsh government has been advised to do this. They’re not necessarily going to.

Some racists are having a big strop because the main ‘star’ in the xmas advert is Adjoa Andoh and because the advert also says women generally are the magic of christmas because they’re generally the ones making it happen.

This is just an anti Welsh article disguised as real news.
They do it a lot in the DM/Telegraph ... misleading headlines and articles where the real message is "look how silly the Welsh are, much better if they were back under English control"

Does it matter.
The point is, it is silly.

I get this when Amazon deliver now - I get a text asking me to secure my dogs (they always are, they are spaniels and not in the least bit dangerous), but it is always asian delivery guys.

Half my family (adoptive father’s side) are muslim/Asian and none have dogs. I think most see them as frightening, feral or harbingers of dirt - which in their country of origin (or rather that of their parents as they are all British Asians) I can understand. It is very clear that people from other cultures do not appreciate dogs the way we Brits/Europeans do. I hate to say they are wrong and that we shouldn’t show some understanding, especially when we have bully XL stories in the news every day and people unfamiliar with dogs have no idea whether which are the more dangerous dogs. That said, my white, Midlands MiL with her OCD and anxieties has always feared dogs, and though she has come around to ours because we have taken care to socialise them properly and segregate them when she first met them, she has never expected the world to adjust to her phobia/dislike of them.

I guess the solution is to have dog free areas and dogs welcome areas, perhaps extending that to kid-free and kid friendly too!

the total opposite of cultural integration then

unless it’s brits integrating into an Islamic society which seems to be the general direction of travel

Hold on a minute!

Why are we bringing Islam into this?

"one black African female stated that she feels unsafe with the presence of dogs"

At no point does it state anywhere in the article that the African woman feels Wales is a racist country because dogs are allowed to roam freely in green spaces.

At no point does it state anywhere in the article that the African woman feels that creating dog free areas is fundamental to her ability to access green spaces, nor that it would reduce racism.

This is the Welsh Government's take, so haw you managed to get form A to B whilst going via Z is breathtaking!

I think this might be my fault. I asked if it was due to that because it was the only possible reason I could think of, and the first story I looked at made no mention of the African woman.

Agapornis · 14/11/2024 14:27

Fwiw they're consulting on the creation of dog free zones in Tower Hamlets too. There are a lot of antisocial dog owners who leave shit everywhere - it's mostly aimed at them. Easier to ban dogs altogether than do some consistent enforcement 🙄 It's billed as a dog-control public spaces protection order (PSPO).

I get that text from one or two specific drivers every time. They also send them to neighbours who don't have dogs (we don't either now, we lost ours recently).

It's a standard Amazon text message that drivers have the option to send once they get close to your location. They send it so that if you're in you're ready to answer the door and they can work their rounds faster, or make up time if they're running behind. They don't know (or care) whether you have a dog or not. If it's the Asian guys with you, it's because they're the ones working their rounds the fastest. With us it's one Polish woman driver and one Eastern European male driver that always do it.

Asking for dogs to be secured is a reasonable request whoever the delivery person happens to be.

Nellieinthebarn · 14/11/2024 14:34

No matter what the motivation behind in creating dog free outdoor spaces, (fair enough, some parks and gardens have always been 'No Dogs') linking this to racism is going to lead to more resentment and islamophobia.

The right are going to use this as an example of 'two tier society', and racism against the white population and indigenous culture. They will be taking their dogs into the prohibited zone as an act of rebellion.

The left are going to kick off at the perceived insulting behaviour of the right towards minorities. Conflict will ensue, the police will have their time wasted sorting it out, the courts will be even more swamped.

UsernameNameUser · 14/11/2024 14:36

That’s… actually hysterically stupid. Dogs are racist now, are they? Come to think of it, I did know a golden retriever who did not like black people 🤔🤣
