To think my friend should not use her tumble dryer on lovely warm dry days.

My friend is lovely, she's supportive, considerate and fun to be around, but one thing that I cannot agree with is the fact that she uses her tumble dryer 365 days a year.

It's on most of the day. She says she uses it to cut down on ironing. I have tried to pursuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.

I know it's none of my business but it bugs me, that she can be so ignorant about it.

Would it annoy anyone else, or is the problem mine?

YABU - what's it to you how she dries her washing?

I have a dishwasher and a tumble drier and use both. I am gazing out of the window at yet another wet and gray Belgian day, so there is no hope of getting anything dry outside.

I do have an airer in the cellar, so use that for ds's tops, and our underwear, but we are in a hard water area, and if I do that it means ironing, whereas tumbling and folding means no ironing (the tops, not the underwear).

I loathe denim that is line dried and do all my jeans in the drier and all my towels too.

Idobelieveinfairies · 28/04/2008 10:29

YABU

I have a dishwasher and i did have a dryer up until a week ago when it died. Can't affored another one just yet and i miss it sooo much.

I do dry the clothes that can't be tumbled on the airer on the baclcony, but i just have too much washing to go without a dryer.

Dryers do cut down on the ironing, but i find the towels that i have had to dry outside are very stiff and scratchy, prefer tumbled ones.

Flibbertyjibbet · 28/04/2008 10:33

We don't have a tumble dryer or disshwasher, line dry in decent weather and on the rack if wet out.
2 adults full time WOH, 2ds's, cloth nappies including 2bums in them for a 12 month period.
I can't bear washing dried on the radiators. When pg with ds1, DP hung one of those old rope and pulley washing racks in the high ceiling void over the stairs. I lean over the landing rail to hang out the washing, all the warm air floats up there and everything dry within 24 hours. I am just in a routine of washing machine on, sort washing, hang up more washing, almost every night. Its so high up I can hang sheets etc on and they are still out of the way.
Perhaps living in a very soft water area makes my outdoor washing less crunchy? Everything seems so much cleaner and fresher when its been outside.

Kewcumber · 28/04/2008 10:33

you aren't being unreasonable to think, you are being unreasonable to bug her about it.

I shouldn't use my tumble dryer when its sunny but I do. If any of my friedns decided to start scloding me about it I'd tell them to fuck off. (Because I'm bloody tired and its easier to use the tumbledryer)

chunkychips · 28/04/2008 10:34

Just watched 'an inconvenient truth' so no I don't think she should be.

A typical tumble dryer will use about 3kW every hour it's used. A typical iron uses about 0.75kW every hour.

So you can do about 4 hours ironing for the same amount of electricity as 1 hours tumble drying.

josta · 28/04/2008 11:46

Kewcumber, I have not scolded her fgs. Just merely pointed out that we all need to do our bit for our world and on a nice warm sunny day maybe she could hang her clothes out.

Maybe if I had put this question in the eco living section I may have had a different response, eh?

It depends on what your tone of voice was I would think. I loathe having people preach at me. It puts my back right up. If one of my friends rocked up and asked me that, they'd get short shrift I'm afraid. She's an adult, she knows what she's doing, let her get on with it.

Kewcumber · 28/04/2008 12:08

it might have sounds like "merely pointing out" to you but trust me it sounded like scolding to her. She sounds like me - she's probably well aware that its more eco-friendly to hang out but she choses not to.

By all means ask in eco-living if you want like-minded people to agree with you.

If you read my reply properly you will see that I said that I didn't think you were being unreasonable to "think" she should hang her washing out but you are being unreasonable if you continue to tell her. Do you run after people in cars shouting at them to walk instead? It probably feels the same to her - ie none of your business, once you're stated your views once.

I would just be glad to have such a good friend

Kewcumber · 28/04/2008 12:11

I am so pig-headed I would probably make a point of loading the tumble dryer every time you came round

Wags · 28/04/2008 12:15

Chances are your friend is 'lovely, supportive, considerate and fun to be around' because she is not spending all day lugging bloody washing from the machine to the line, then back again when it rains, then back again to the line to finish drying it, then folding it then ironing nearly all of it cos its all stiff and creased. Simple job, machine, dryer, fold, put away, then time to be a lovely friend to you. She can obviously afford the bills so leave her alone YABU!

Wags · 28/04/2008 12:17

Ooh, so would I Kew. I would probably pop 2 teatowels in there, click on button and away it goes

PrincessConsualaBananaHammock · 28/04/2008 12:29

Hi I am always using my dryer come rain or shine. I do use the line in the summer more as in the winter i get a lot of spiddy's on it and cannot stand them. sometimes I use both

josta · 28/04/2008 12:43

Ok dear friends just for the record.....

I did not go round scolding, preaching or use any other form or condescending manner.

We have been good mates for 20 odd years and been through alot together. I've helped her out many times and vice versa. I think it's a sad state of affairs when a mate can't say in a light hearted way to hang the bloody washing outside!

scaryteacher · 28/04/2008 12:54

'I have tried to persuade her to hang it outside on many occasions but she just laughs it off. I think the more I mention it the more she digs her heels in.'

A bit more than a light hearted comment methinks - more like a constant irritating nag, and your mate is displaying exactly the reaction I would.

Furthermore, she may not believe in climate change, so she may not be 'ignorant' as you phrase it, but waiting to be convinced on the evidence.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 28/04/2008 12:56

cor i'd love to line dry, not allowed lines here (to do with special nature of area / resulting lease conditions)

besides with 4 dc and 2 in nappies......

PuppyMonkey · 28/04/2008 13:00

Dries much quicker on the line on a bright windy day. That'll do for me...

Has to be a proper straight line though. Can't STAND those poxy rotary jobbies...

barnstaple · 28/04/2008 13:03

(Not read the thread)

You sound like my MIL. It's none of your business. Leave her alone.

ThingOne · 28/04/2008 13:23

Snorkle, those figures are great, thank you. My aim is only to tumble enough to soften and avoid ironing (about 15 mins per load), rather than dry completely so I reckon I'm on evens energy wise. (admits to being a crap ironer and hating it as it takes so long)

I have a really ugly straight washing line in my new garden and I love it! Catches the wind far better than a rotary drier but I can't fit quite a much on.

Can't wait until we've finished mending/painting walls and I can put up a pulley airer. I hate washing on radiators.

onepieceoflollipop · 28/04/2008 13:58

That's what I do ThingOne - a few minutes in the drier then hang up straight away.

RubberDuck · 28/04/2008 14:20

So is it better (in terms of crunchiness in towels) to give the blast of tumble for a little bit before hanging it out, or after it's almost dry on the line just to finish it off?

Trying for better habits...

CilC · 28/04/2008 14:20

Sorry can not believe we are judging people on their use of dishwashers and tumble driers. I use both most days... and the thought of hand washing my dishes has never entered my mind. However having said that we have an electric car and recycle. But even if we did not have these, I would still use my helpers.
I do not understand where people get the time to hand wash and put washing on the line? I am just grateful the drier allows me to wash and dry at night.
