currently stuck in a career I’m not happy in. Would love to find something I love and leave the corporate world for good.

If you love your job what is it that you do?

OP posts:

Nurse

Polyp0 · 12/11/2024 21:01

I teach

woulducouldushouldu · 12/11/2024 21:03

Head of tax (financial services)

May not be the most PC career but always changing, technically stimulating and as a HoT I get to sit at the negotiating table with the commercial guys.

marriednotdead · 12/11/2024 21:07

Bra fitter. Always used to do finance related stuff but fell into this over 15 years ago and still love it. Retail so the money is lousy but I don’t care.

JustBeach · 12/11/2024 21:08

Social Worker , wouldn't do anything else!

Suchavirgo · 12/11/2024 21:12

Photographer / videography - genuinely love my job and can’t imagine doing anything else

Interesting the number of accountants saying they love their work!

I'm a copy editor for a newspaper. Great job, so interesting, well paid and I don't have to write anything unlike the journos

Interesting you say you’re well paid… when I was a sub editor in newspapers the pay was shocking. I went to “the dark side” of PR and get paid far better.

I make new cancer therapies (biotech company), some of which go into clinical trials and hopefully into the clinic in the longer term. It's amazing. I work with brilliant, talented people.

olivo · 12/11/2024 21:14

I also teach. 25+ years and I still love it.

missymousey · 12/11/2024 21:14

Gardener. So happy being outside and I love the flexibility of being self employed (after years chained to a desk)

I like my job ( Finance manager), I love my Employer ( Commercial Landlord). I wfh and don't have a lot to do on a day to day maybe 1-2hrs but regular tasks every week to keep on top of, invoicing, vat runs, cashflow forecasts, payroll and payment runs. My work/life balance is excellent. I'm usually done by 1pm. My boss has nothing further for me to do, I've asked repeatedly for 7yrs. He's never been bothered that we're not 100% flat out as long as our work is done and we're on hand to get stuff done for him when needed.
So for me, it's about the organisation rather than job.

Electrical design engineer - I love my job. Stressful and high pressure at times but I love that each project is different and that at times I get to see what I've worked hard on put onto the distribution network

Yeah, it isn't normally, but it's an American newspaper

NHS consultant here, won’t say what specialty as too identifiable, but I love my job nearly every day. The ‘junior’ docs, students, the wider team (physios, nurses etc) and most importantly the patients are usually delightful. One colleague likened our job to crack cocaine. It gives such a buzz..

Crack cocaine makes me think ED, ITU or prehospital care.

Op I'm a scientist in the NHS

nyxel · 12/11/2024 21:33

Data scientist/analyst. I've also done teaching and scientific research, both of which I hated. Teaching - suffered with really bad performance anxiety which never went away, and scientific research was too slow & painstaking, it suits a perfectionist, which I am not. I'd got to the point where I assumed I just didn't like working TBH, so I'm amazed I've dropped on this - it heavy on problem solving in a scientific way, but also close to the business end of a business, so very fast paced. Projects change every week and I learn something new every day. Work life balance is great, 100% WFH, lovely work colleagues.

I'm a manager for a safeguarding team in a substance misuse service. We help educate parents around how their substance misuse may impact themselves, children, partner and wider family. We work very closely with social care. It's chaotic, emotionally draining at times, frustrating and stressful but so so rewarding.

Middlemarch123 · 12/11/2024 21:35

Left working in Education after twenty years.
Semi-retired, now have my own dog walking business, absolutely love it. Except for a little Westie today who rolled in fox poo so needed a bath and blow dry before his owners got home. Better than all the politics of school life though 😀

BulbousFrog · 12/11/2024 21:36

Very niche area of high tech law. Absolutely love it but it's very nerdy and only a handful of people in the UK do my job!

Boofoof · 12/11/2024 21:38

University lecturer/ tutor and NHS Consultant- I love both jobs!

Queenfreak · 12/11/2024 21:40

I work as a carer/PA for children/young adults with complex needs. Not terribly well paid, but I absolutely love it. Moved to this from nannying when I started my own family.

IfAManHadPostedThis · 12/11/2024 21:41

I'm a university lecturer and I absolutely love it. Did have to go to school for about 8 years, though!

Charlize43 · 12/11/2024 21:41

I have a casual job as an events assistant & events hostess in the arts that I love. It is basically meet & greet, guest lists, pouring wine and smiling and making small talk about art, at private views and corporate private hires (I've worked with Event Organisers, I've done London Fashion Week, but Visual Arts is my field).

I call it my Belle du Jour job as at times it can feel like a fantasy like when I've been invited to work at rich peoples residences in Mayfair on behalf of an Art Gallery, there are several that call me for work. It's a total role I play; everything from the three black long sleeve sheer top dresses that I use, to my black suede heels to treating each evening as an exercise in charm: Sometimes, I pretend I'm an ambassador's wife in the 1950s, other times a Miss Moneypenny type. I have it almost down to an actress playing a role, along with certain rituals like removing any nail polish, not wearing any jewellery... Sometimes, it's not so glamorous and you feel like a housekeeper/maid, getting glasses, getting people's coats, mopping spillages, etc. I come from an Arts History background and I enjoy meeting people, so it is easy money (it is not very well paid). Often your are stuck talking to some old banker (the majority of patrons of art institutions are corporate wealth managers) and making sure they have a nice evening. I'm a reasonably looking 57 year old (my style icon is Isabelle Huppert) so there is little chance of being seen as a potential pick up! At the end of the night, I love the free taxi ride home from Mayfair to South London (ha!).

My other/real life is anything but glamorous! There were times after Covid that I was getting two buses to get to central London because my budget was so tight that £1.50 was all I could afford, and then entering this world of great wealth. Quite bizarre to have spent the evening chatting to Mr No.9 on the Sunday Times Rich list and then going home to a freezing cold house and bursting into tears. I also do office temping during the day to eke out a living.

I quite enjoy working and after being made redundant during Covid, would like my final 10 years to be as interesting as possible.
