My cat is missing

My cat has gone missing and I’m not coping . She’s honestly the most gorgeous and special animal you could imagine. She’s so loving and friendly and playful. She was born the same time as my latest DC and they’ve been growing up together.

She went out last night and didn’t come back. Partner and I were up every hour looking for her. This morning we’ve texted all the neighbours, posted in local WhatsApp and fbk groups, called the vet, reporting her missing on her microchip, put little and dirty clothes, food outside… we are going to print some leaflets and posters .. anything else?

our neighbour said he saw her last night when his dog chased her round the corner 😡.

Please share your positive cat stories.

we love her so much. She’s DD1’s pride and joy.

One of mine went missing for five days then turned up, well but tired. Don't give up hope

FupaTrooper · 12/11/2024 15:49

My childhood cat went to sleep in someone's car and they didn't realise until they arrived at their destination which was over 2 hours north of where we lived. She jumped out of the car and we thought that was the end of that. So devastated!

She turned up at a vet about 20 mins from home a few months later. No idea how she had travelled back down on her own but something must have told her the tight direction and then someone took her to the vet when they saw her.

Miracles do happen.
Me and my 3 furry ginger boys are sending you our best wishes xx

Vast majority of missing cats turn up within a few days. Don't panic yet. Probably locked in an outbuilding so make sure you write on your lost notices to check those, and once you've made them put them through local doors so everyone gets the message.

niadainud · 12/11/2024 15:55

Is this very unusual for your cat? Disappearing for up to 24 hours is nothing out of the ordinary for mine and I really wouldn't worry too much yet.

Hope she turns up soon.

susiedaisy1912 · 12/11/2024 15:57

I know how hard it is to stay positive but don't panic too much just yet. They often just turn back up. Sending you positive vibes

PettyJelly · 12/11/2024 15:57

One of mine is often wandering of for a couple of days at a time. I’ve not seen him since yesterday morning but that’s normal for him.

It sounds like yours was spooked by the dog. She’s probably hiding somewhere nearby. Have you been out with a torch looking for eyes under sheds etc?

AgileGreenSeal · 12/11/2024 15:58

Happened to one of mine many years ago. Turned out she was accidentally locked in a neighbours garage. Neighbour had no idea she was in there. She will most likely turn up and you will never know where she’s been.

As a child my cat went missing for 3 weeks , I thought for sure he was dead but my brother found him and brought him home . I've had a cat travel 2 towns away in a delivery van whilst she was being taken care of by someone else she had info on her collar so was returned . Sometimes when cats get a fright like being chased they hide for a while but turn up again. Don't lose hope , the microchip is great , if she's picked up it'll get scanned

RoastPotatoConnoisseur · 12/11/2024 16:01

One of mine has been missing for a month. It is heartbreaking but I am hoping she will either find her way home or someone will take her to a vets to be scanned. Nobody has found her injured or squashed so I am taking that as good news.

I don't think there is much more you can do apart from keep going out and calling and then waiting to see if they turn up.

My cat went missing for 10 years, it was summer 2013 i took my children to school and sge was in the garden, and just didnt come back. Last dec i got a call saying she had been found.

This is obviously unusual, but they are resillient, never give up hope!

I’m so sorry OP - it’s so stressful when it happens!

My cat did the same thing a few years ago. It was SO unlike her to go missing, she never went further than the garden and was always home at night. She was gone for about 24 hours then eventually came home late in the evening when it was dark. I think she’d had a real fright and was lying low.

My parents’ cat was gone for four days then just wandered home, a bit skinny and muddy.

Keep looking and calling for her. Leave her litter tray or bed (something that smells of her) outside so she can get the scent. Check regularly with neighbours re sheds and garages.

Cats are very resourceful and resilient. She is most likely fine and is just waiting for dark and quiet to find her way home. The most likely outcome is she will come back ♥️

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/11/2024 16:11

Mine went missing (this is decades ago but cats are cats) for 48 hours and we feared the worst. Despite torrential rain, we prowled the streets calling his name and shaking the cat treat tin.

We'd just about decided he was lying dead somewhere when he came clattering in through the catflap. Despite the two days of rain, he was dry - but absolutely filthy. We decided he'd probably got shut in a garage or shed and spent the time trying to find a way out, getting very dusty into the bargain. He went on and on about it, as if it were our fault, for quite a long time.

Floralnomad · 12/11/2024 16:13

Hope she comes home soon . Don’t forget to ring round the local rescues , all the localish vets and also the council as they sometimes get called if an animal is deceased on the road , which is not nice to think about but probably preferable to not knowing if it has happened . 💐

Our friends cat arrived at their new house in the removal van. Crept in there when no one was looking! They could not find him before they left so all the neighbours were asked to keep an eye out and the new owners of the house. No need as it turned out.

potatocakesinprogress · 12/11/2024 16:27

Get neighbours to check sheds/garages/lockups and tucked away places. They often end up in them, especially if cold or sick.

When they come back, get a GPS tracker so you know where they are all the time.

Our cat came back after 6 months. Then we bought a tracker.

Omg I’m so so upset that we didn’t get a tracker. Why didn’t we think of that? 😢😢😢

I feel your pain op.
My sons lovely cat went missing. We did everything you have done but it was 7 weeks before he returned!! The thing that helped was putting posters up, as he had actually gone exploring in some woods about 1/4 mile away. He couldn't find his way back and the residents of the road near these woods got in touch with me. No one had been feeding him so he had survived 7 weeks independently. He was very skinny but only took a few weeks to get back to normal. Hang on in there... it's still very early days and I hope you have a happy ending

ladymalfoy45 · 12/11/2024 16:38

Childhood cat caught a lift with a delivery driver. She disembarked at a jewelers about five miles from home.
She was brought home by one of the sales assistants before we knew she was missing.
The woo thing is it was a jewelers my mum had worked at when she was only just married. So thirty years before cat rocked up to them.

ladymalfoy45 · 12/11/2024 16:39

And I think vets should be able to pop in a tracker like a chip.

backfromouterspace · 12/11/2024 16:39

Your cat won't be far. Most of them are never too far away. Ours went missing a year ago and we did everything you did and leafleted about 80 houses. We were due to go on holiday as well which was adding to the stress. Day five we received a call from a neighbour on our estate about 50 yards away (a house I had leafleted) and the cat was hiding under a car. Needless to say the cat was grounded.

Don't give up hope. Your cat will not be far away

Honestly our tracker is more trouble than it’s worth. Constantly running out of battery and doesn’t realise it’s home so keeps trying to find a signal indoors - again, running down the battery. It’s more stress inducing than not having one tbh.

An AirTag might work if you live in a town/city though.
