My cat is missing

My cat has gone missing and I’m not coping . She’s honestly the most gorgeous and special animal you could imagine. She’s so loving and friendly and playful. She was born the same time as my latest DC and they’ve been growing up together.

She went out last night and didn’t come back. Partner and I were up every hour looking for her. This morning we’ve texted all the neighbours, posted in local WhatsApp and fbk groups, called the vet, reporting her missing on her microchip, put little and dirty clothes, food outside… we are going to print some leaflets and posters .. anything else?

our neighbour said he saw her last night when his dog chased her round the corner 😡.

Please share your positive cat stories.

we love her so much. She’s DD1’s pride and joy.

My heart goes out to you. I know that horrible wrenching ache inside, where you can’t settle to anything and just want to know they are safe.
Just know that most cats do return; if you go the the litter tray page you will find lots of stories of returned cats.
Maybe go on google earth, look for everyone with a shed in their garden and knock on their doors, asking if you can check their garden and shed. Put a leaflet through doors asking people to check sheds and garages. Messages on local facebook pages of all kinds.
Hoping that you are reunited very soon 😘

Thank you all so much for your messages , it’s definitely given me some encouragement.
The difficulty is that we are in a city with lots of private gardens that we cant really see into. Thats where she likes to hang out . We’re trying to reach out to all the neighbours and asking them to check their garages/ sheds/ gardens . We’ve been out looking and calling so often. The thing that really worries me is she usually comes running to me if I call for her, or if she’s further away, and can’t get to me immediately , she’ll meow/ call back. But I’ve been out so many times and just nothing- no sign of her. :(

I’m sure someone has already suggested, but go out and call very early in the morning - whenever it’s very quiet. You’ll have the best chance of hearing her then, especially if she is trapped in a shed etc. Call door to door at the neighbours and give them your flyer as an image reference.

Ours has gone missing for a few days at a time. One time she came back in terrified, so not sure what had happened there. Another time she wandered in, devoured a bowl of food then slept for 2 days! She'd obviously had a wonderful adventure!

She is a prolific hunter though and hates people so we knew she was likely safe, just exploring and had gone a bit further afield.

It was a terrible worry though.

Our local lost pets group often will share tips that include leaving familiar scents outside, so litter tray, blankets and bedding, etc.

Knock on neighbours doors, or put notices through, asking them to check any sheds or outhouses they might have had open since your DCat was last seen.

You can report her as missing with the microchip company too, so if someone does scan her it will flag up.

Best time to search is late evening or early morning, when it's quiet.

If there's a sound that your cat normally comes running to or would be particularly familiar with, use that. In our case we have a metal tin that their food pouches are stored in and they come running every time they hear the handle.

Hang her blanket or something that smell of home on the washing line. It might help her find her way home.

WorldMap24 · 12/11/2024 17:55

Mine went missing for just over 24 hours the first night he was allowed out all night. It just happened to be DH birthday too. He went out about 11pm on the day before his birthday and came back at 12.10am the day after. It was an awful day, but he's (touch wood) never done it since

Hope your little one works her way back to you!

I think you really need to consider how your cats errant behaviour Is effecting your neighbours dog. It is likely distressed by your cat. Perhaps try a lead for the cat if it returns, that's what I do to prevent my ferrets getting into mischief.

If she’s had a fright and is bunkered down somewhere then she’s unlikely to come out even if she hears you ♥️ calling later in the evening might work as it will generally be less busy and she will feel more confident leaving a hiding place, if that’s where she is.

Good luck. I hate it when my girl is missing for ever a short time. I would be beside myself.

Friend of mine had a cat go missing. Sadly a body was found and funeral took place in the garden. As said funeral was happening they turned around to see their cat wondering what all the fuss was about!

Don't you keep your ferrets down your trousers?

Gimmeabreak2025 · 12/11/2024 20:18

My cat was missing for 3 months, had never been gone before, then walked in 6am one morning and followed me around shouting at me for days and wouldn’t let me out if his sight. He’s never gone missing again.

Minikievs · 12/11/2024 20:22

Mine went missing and I went and knocked on every single door in about a 1.5 mile radius. Took me ages and I think most people thought I was bonkers.
But she turned up as someone had accidentally locked her in their garage. The neighbour two doors up 🙄
Hope yours comes back soon Flowers

Maybe go on google earth, look for everyone with a shed in their garden and knock on their doors, asking if you can check their garden and shed. Maybe ask them if they can check their shed. "I'm looking for my cat" is the go-to excuse for local lowlifes when you find them poking around your garden.

@TheDowagerCountessofPembroke Have you posted that before? I've read it before on MN

How's a cat supposed to get any fun around here?? 🤭

Amusing derail there.

OP I'm looking forward to seeing your post saying the little toad has returned.

razattack · 12/11/2024 21:18

This is going to sound odd, but google 'playing this sound is suppose to make your cat come to you' and play it while out and about. Just playing it now in my house and my cat came to see what was going on. Hope you find her 🤞

Comingupriver · 12/11/2024 21:24

sending positive vibes.

imjusthereforAIBU · 12/11/2024 21:38

Our cat never wants to come in when we call for him - it's like he thinks he's in trouble. If calling doesn't work, you can also try sitting calmly somewhere they might be, smelling like "home" and see if they come to investigate.

Lolandwoody · 12/11/2024 21:50

My heart goes out to you, the week my cat went missing was awful. It can help to empty the contents of your hoover outside the house as they’ll smell of home. Got everything crossed for you that she comes home safely 🤞

ChicRaven · 12/11/2024 21:55

Colleagues cat went missing for 5 weeks then just wondered back home as though nothing had happened.
Another lady, a similar story but the cat had got himself locked into an unlived in flat. It's thought it ran in when the cleaner went in and then got itself locked in. When the cleaner returned after 2 weeks, the cat came running out.

Wishing you well x

nonevernotever · 12/11/2024 21:59

Don't give hope. My sister's cat was like yours -never went very far, always came when she was called etcetc until she didn't. Was away for five days and then just walking dusty, hungry and very tired. If she was chased by a dog I wonder if she's hiding up somewhere until she thinks it's safe to come back?

My friend had exactly the same thing happen to her

Someone knocked on her door, holding a body of her cat, (wrapped in a blanket) who had disappeared a few days earlier

She got her then dp to dig a hole in the garden, buried him (with the blanket) and while sobbing her eyes out, went inside to light a candle for bob

There, sat on her sofa was bob,who was wondering what all the tears where about and howling that he wanted to be fed!
