I keep hearing this, and I'm wondering if in fact it's true that thin people are treated better than fat people?

I have noticed that people are nicer to me when I make an effort and dress up and look well turned-out etc.

I have never been overweight but I have absolutely no doubt that people get treated better when they are slimmer.

I have had my fair share of hurtful comments when I was very thin. I felt incredibly unattractive and embarrassed about my appearance, especially as my low weight was due to stress. However, I still think on balance it is much less of an issue in society than being bigger. Fatter people do get treated worse. Both as individuals, and also by the media, joked about, presumptions made etc.

Beezknees · 12/11/2024 17:09

I've been both and can't say I've noticed a difference in the way I'm treated. Currently fat.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 12/11/2024 17:11

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I do judge overweight people.

Why? Do you assume that all fat people are just lazy and sit on the sofa stuffing their faces all day?

JohnTheRevelator · 12/11/2024 17:15

I think you get treated better if you're slim. I was very overweight for years, then I lost 7 stone. I noticed a distinct difference in people's attitudes towards me. More willing to speak to me,not act as if I'm invisible,as if 'The Fatness' is contagious.

I think you're living in lala land if you think no-one's ever commented on what/how much a fat person eats!

She means to their face. People say what they want to a thin person, it’s rarely face to face with a fat person.

Honestly that says more about you than anything else. I'd rather be friends with a nice fat person than you.

I’m being honest, ok?

I assume they either have an underlying condition, or that they have a poor diet and don’t exercise.

It depends on their age to an extent.

Have you ever asked anyone who has lived with obesity if that is true? If they have rarely or ever had a comment made to their face about their weight, their body, their eating habits, exercise habits?

Anybody who thinks this is worth asking has never been very fat.
It is like asking if sexism or racism exists.

You are right

Berlinlover · 12/11/2024 17:20

I judged overweight women until I developed a massive stomach over the course of about eighteen months. I blamed the menopause initially but it got to the stage where I was eating very little and still gaining weight. It turned out I had stage three uterine cancer. Now when I see women with large stomachs I’m concerned for them.

Fair enough.

Perhaps it does.

Are you sure you’re 7st or is that a typo? That is the average weight of a 10yr old boy

Huge eye roll! How rude! She’s 5ft. 7st is a healthy weight at 5ft.

MMOC · 12/11/2024 14:20

I will say I’ve been treated much nicer since being fat than I ever was as a slim person.
People are a lot more friendly towards me now on a larger lady.

I prefer large size people although I'm medium size. Who and what they are is more important than their size, though.

I know what she means and, again, if you think people don't say rude/unpleasant/unhelpful things to fat people about what they eat you are mistaken (as I'm sure any fat person will tell you).

Goldenbear · 12/11/2024 18:34

I think it can be the case but I would argue good looking people tend to get the nose attention.

Goldenbear · 12/11/2024 18:35

Most not 'nose'

Shizzlestix · 12/11/2024 18:37

I’ve been both, currently slim, but I don’t think I’ve been treated differently as either. I had all my promotions as a very fat person.

Whitemale24 · 12/11/2024 18:44

I am inclined to agree, I think the general sentiment towards the nations fat folks such as myself is that we are a comedic laughing stock.

Once in Tesco's I lost my balance and fell, whilst struggling to get back up the local children started throwing celery at me saying cruel things like "lose weight fatty" not nice

AvalancheOfCheese · 12/11/2024 19:37

I gained 8 stone and lost 9.5 in just over 3 years and it most definitely is a thing in my experience.

As pp have said, quite shocking the difference in which I was treated in almost every aspect of my life when I was fat.

Yes, I've been both extremes and the difference is nuts. I'm the same person!
I can't imagine treating anyone differently based on appearance

That's a BMI of just over 19 and is classed within the healthy range.

In my experience, slim women are often treated better by men but worse by larger women. Unsure if those two things are connected.

coxesorangepippin · 13/11/2024 01:38

Is that your experience? How fat were you? It's not mine at all.
^

When I was a size 16 men barely acknowledged me. Women all wanted to be my friend and had a very sympathetic attitude towards me ( not sure why, I wasn't in need of it?!)

At a size ten men are very friendly, women are very distant and basically don't engage.

I'm the same person. The same mind, Outlook, feelings etc.
The difference is incredible.
