Thanks so much - I asked for the post to be deleted as my name change didn't go through and the post was really identifying - anyone who knows my 5 year old will know his art style and pictures as it's all he does at school, on the train, in the park, at sports matches - doodling with an art pad and pen in hand.
I think those dismissing how to draw videos should really give it a try. It's a fun way for kids to draw pictures they are satisfied with at an early stage - and stops them from giving up on art too easily thinking they can't draw in the early days because their pictures don't look like what they were trying to draw in their head. The creative kids will move on from those videos but will have a solid base of techniques to draw from. The less creative kids might still engage with art and continue using how to draw videos and books - which is still a great skill and relaxing pastime.
We get asked a lot by other parents how he learnt to draw - and we tell them that he started off copying how to draw videos on youtube. He has since progressed to copying still images and objects such as his toys and drawing from his imagination, and now does a mixture of all of them but mainly draws freehand.
