Just curious!

How old would you say the DC is who drew this?

Anywhere from about 5/6 to about 8/9.

Artistic skill is hugely variable & its not predictive of general intelligence/other skills, especially where copying images or doing art hub videos.

One of my DC is extremely academically able but poorer at drawing than this aged 8. Just doesn't see visually the relative sizes of things etc, even copying it all goes wonky.

Same DC has a friend who drew fantastic pictures even in reception.

Thunderpants88 · 11/11/2024 23:28

Aw so cute! I would have guessed 6/7

Tryingtogetonwithit · 11/11/2024 23:30

Based on my own children one would have done detailed "copy" drawings like this aged 4, one would have been shed 8ish another would have struggled to ever produce this.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/11/2024 23:30

I think that is very good for a 5 year old (judging by my son's efforts at that age anyway)

Chan9eusername · 11/11/2024 23:32

Wow wow you can see he's already developing a distinctive art style too - incredible!

His drawing skills are good but the style is very very copied from you tube videos

Why are there so many threads like this? I feel like there is one every week. Is being good at drawing at a young a sign of genius or something?

I think things like arthub with simple step by step videos means lots of kids have learned how to draw & paint very easily recognisable pictures. My niece and her friends all seem to draw much better than kids did when i was her age.

However i do think there's a loss of creativity. Lots of their pictures have a very generic look of things copied off the Internet

My guess would have been around 5 or 6 years old.

It's a great drawing but the tell-tale signs for me that it was a younger child were that:
a) it's a copied picture
b) the colouring-in is outside the lines
c) the drawn lines are wobbly and Pikachu's front legs (paws?) don't have any features - older children tend to start adding more detailed features like fingers, claws etc

None of that is negative - it's what you'd expect to see in a drawing from a younger child. At first glance it does look as if it's been done by an older child, but the signs are there that it's been done by someone younger who's good at art.

I want to emphasise she's clearly really good for a 5-year old and she loves it, which is even more important! Keep encouraging her OP - creative activities are wonderful for the developing brain and it's a great passion for children to have.

You can tell your DD from us OP that we all think that she's drawn a lovely picture!

I mean those harry potter pictures you can see exactly the inspiration for if you google "easy harry potter drawing".

Mine could have done that at around 6 months old ☺️

Pah! Mine arrived out of the womb clutching a full portfolio of similar sketches

User28473 · 11/11/2024 23:40

I would have guessed 6-10. My 7 year old can draw a lot better than that but my 11 year old is not much better. I have a very talented 19 year old doing an art degree, and she used to love drawing Pokémon, I just found this photo she did at 5. It is more immature than your daughter's, but she was definitely better than most of her peers at that age. However, I think my 7 year old is better at basic drawing than his older siblings at the same age because there are so many popular drawing tutorials on YouTube, and they seem to teach art more formally in primary now and have moved away from free expression.

How old would you say the DC is who drew this?
SummerSnowstorm · 11/11/2024 23:42

One of ours would've copied this at 3, another would've probably made scruffier lines at around 10 still. Art's more talent than age I think, very different to academics.

pollyglot · 11/11/2024 23:44

The details of the hat and ears strongly suggest copying...having the "tail" of the hat falling behind the ear is a concept too sophisticated for a young child's imagination.

maras2 · 11/11/2024 23:46

I'm 71 and couldn't do half as good a job as this. Smile

GettingStuffed · 11/11/2024 23:48

60 as it's better than I could draw

It looks like something my grandson would draw and he's 7 and a better artist than me

RickiRaccoon · 11/11/2024 23:50

It's good. 7 or 8.

Kitkatcatflap · 12/11/2024 00:07

Don't get over excited. At 4 I was drawing like an accomplished 8 year old. I would draw at every opportunity. Family had high hopes for my artistic ability but I peaked early. I turned 60 this year and still draw like an 8 year old.

My sons pretty good at drawing and was doing similar to this at about age 4. It makes you feel so proud!! He still does a lot of copying pictures but now he’s six he is starting to freehand and use imagination! He loves it an will draw for hours! I however can’t draw a thing 😂
Harry Potter is his new drawing phase x

That's really good for 6! You've a talented kid!

Clauz · 12/11/2024 00:14

8!

HildaHosmede · 12/11/2024 00:16

I'd say 8.

x2boys · 12/11/2024 00:17

Well I'm 51 and I don't think I could do any better .

UnrealRita · 12/11/2024 00:19

tilypu · 11/11/2024 22:57

Based on my own artistic talents, I'd say about 53 😂

I was going to say, I couldn't draw that now!

That's really good, OP.

Just curious!

  1. But to be fair at 45 I could not draw anything like it cause I'm horrible at drawing do it could be an older kid as well. Or younger, artistic.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/11/2024 00:24

The way the legs are and stuff looks quite advanced if it was off the top of their head, but it seems like it's copied. Also the colouring is a bit scruffy. So an older child would have a bit more control of that. I'd say maybe 5-6.
It would be different if you showed a pic where they were just told 'draw a made up animal/monster' from scratch then it would easier to judge the age. I could be wrong of course? It's a cute picture either way.
