To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

You’re asking people with dogs to consider your feelings and avoid doing something they’re quite within their rights to do then insulting them. Do you not see why people aren’t that willing to change their plans for you?

Having your dog with you everywhere at all times is only a right if your dog is a medical service dog. Otherwise no, it isn’t a right, it’s just something you want to do.

Tapthisscreen · 11/11/2024 13:12

It’s absolutely fine to take your dogs places they are allowed to go.

TofuTart · 11/11/2024 13:17

YANBU.
Even worse at places that make "puppacinos" or sell pawsecco.
Fucking ridiculous lol

Everything is comprised of chemicals though, how on earth do you cope?
We breathe chemicals, we eat chemicals, we are chemicals.

Given that you are such a highly educated person, I would have expected that you would be fully aware of the fact that migraine can be triggered by artificial fragrances. Clearly this must be a fact that has somehow escaped you 😏.

That’s fine, I hope your brats enjoy the lights.

thanks, but I don’t have any brats

PontiacFirebird · 11/11/2024 13:56

In somewhere like the Lakes / Yorkshire Dales etc it's obvious there need to be sections where dogs can be taken in, as otherwise businesses would lose half of their customers
Well, I grew up in the Yorkshire dales and I don’t remember cafes or shops ever letting dogs in (aside from assistance dogs)
Old man pubs only ( no food) It was considered very unhygienic to have dogs in a place that sells food especially. You left your dog at home, or outside.
The point a pp made about the effect on assistance dogs is a very good one too. It’s very distracting to a dog trying to work, having other dogs around everywhere.

Eh?
Just stop now, you're embarrassing yourself.
Of course I'm aware that different chemicals can do a whole host of differebt things, my point was that referring to 'chemicals' as bad or thinking 'natural' is always better than 'synthetic' is essentially meaningless.

I don’t like the sound of babies crying, the smell of their milky puke, their trip hazard buggy’s or the incessant need for mothers to dominate conversations about their little darlings. Don’t get me started on dirty cafe tables covered in half eaten food and snotty tissues. Dogs are just important to some people as kids are to others.

Yet here you are on MUMSnet. Go set up a forum called DOGSnut and froth away to your heart's content.

Problem is that’s pretty much everywhere now.

Excellent, the more the better 🐕

I just Googled and found out they allow well-behaved dogs in Foyles.

This thread has opened my eyes to lots of new possibilities beyond just the bakery and the pub.🐕

So you don’t think there should be a more equal amount of dog-friendly and non dog-friendly spaces? To cater for those who want to avoid dogs due to allergies, phobias or just general
disliking?

brbg2g · 11/11/2024 14:43

Years ago our family GP used to have his dog in his office all the time. He had it with him every day until he retired. It was a huge dog and his office was only small. I took my ds for 6 week check and had to ask him to let the dog out of the room because it just didn't sit well with me and I didn't know how the dog would be with a tiny newborn. Seems bonkers thinking about it now.

Edited

Only when there are an equal number of places that don’t allow screaming, feral brats in them. In my experience, children are often more of a nuisance in shops and cafes than dogs. People with badly behaved dogs don’t tend to take them to these places

Bonkers that you were worried about a dog that would have been present for appointments with hundreds of other newborns, presumably without savaging many of them.

You said “the more the better” so those with allergies to dogs should have to struggle to find a suitable coffee shop, in your opinion, just because some people let their toddlers run around screaming? The two are not related. Make it make sense.

Yanbu I don't want dogs jumping up me and slobbering everywhere. No I don't think your dog is cute and I don't want to fuss over it. Taking a dog out into shops and cafes is 100% for the owners benefit and not for the dog. Dogs want to play, and run in open fields and beaches not dragged around crowded shops or squahed under tables at cafes.

What about the dogs that sit at home alone missing their owners though :-(

“Make it make sense” 🤣
Could you BE any more patronising?
The point is that children irritate some people but they are allowed in most public spaces. The same applies to dogs. That’s life.

My dog gets plenty of time to run free but she also likes coming with us for meals and snacks, often these are part of a long walk.

I don’t known anyone who has a medical condition eg allergy to kids though

The same doesn’t, therefore apply

Sorry if you feel patronised. It must be because you insist on saying allergy sufferers have to endure dogs everywhere because you have to endure children screaming sometimes. Once again they’re not comparable but I’ll leave it there.

People with allergies to dogs just have to avoid places where they hang out. It is the business owners decision whether they want to allow dogs in their premises.
