To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

Calling bullshit. There are plenty of places not dog friendly and it's not hard to find them. Much harder to avoid horrific and strong perfumes and aftershaves.

Fenwicks being dog friendly is interesting though, I've never seen a dog in one.

It’s not bullshit. Come to Tunbridge Wells and see for yourself!

How is it a fact? My dog doesn’t moult and literally doesn’t smell! I accept some dogs do smell and I know that smell!

I can assure you your dog smells. You are just inured to it. Your house reeks too. Again, you are just used to it.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 11/11/2024 10:14

I'm not fussed by it as long as they're well behaved. People with poorly behaved dogs infuriate me though.

I saw a dog in a trolley in TK Maxx today.
🙄

My 3 year old son doesn't like dogs and I can pinpoint exactly what caused this.

We were leaving a pub one Saturday afternoon after having lunch. As we walked to the door we walked past a table of two adults and a dog on the floor. I guided my son past the dog, ensuring he knew it was there and didn't accidentally kick it as it was underfoot and pre-schoolers don't really look where they are going.

My son went past the dog and then walked ahead of me towards the door. A second dog then jumped up from the other side of the table and stood right in his face. The dog was taller than my son. I can honestly see why it was terrifying. The owners had it on a lead, but it had enough slack that the dog could get up and approach my son.

Obviously the dog owner said the inevitable 'he won't hurt you' tinklebollocks. As I left with my clearly terrified son I said 'OK, but it really scared him' and gave her a serious look. I think dog owners expect a 'ha ha/smile/silly me OF COURSE THE DOG IS RIGHT IN ALL SITUATIONS/smile/nod reaction but I was so pissed off on behalf of my son that I wanted the owners to bloody know it.

And now here we are, about 5 months later and my son will tell me 'I'm scared of the dogs' when we are on a walk and he's 50 meters away from going past two little poodley whatsits.

Please please complain to TKMaxx. I have done, and HQ don't want dogs in their stores. Sadly, the head security guard at my local TKMaxx doesn't care (dog owner himself).

We were in a lovely pub for lunch last month while on a trip away. A couple came in with two little dogs and sat close by to us in the No Dogs area. The dogs kept yelping / barking/ snapping at each other. Our toddler was upset by the continual loud barking and we had to wolf the remainder of our lunches to get out.

Yesterday we had similar but luckily they weren't as close to us, so we could distract.

In somewhere like the Lakes / Yorkshire Dales etc it's obvious there need to be sections where dogs can be taken in, as otherwise businesses would lose half of their customers. In town centres it is absolutely not necessary.

mamajong · 11/11/2024 10:16

Yanbu I'm not a fan either. Too many dog owners have poor control and I'm tired of being pawed, sniffed etc by dogs I have no interest in or hearing the constant barking. I like dogs but I choose not to have one and I don't always want to engage. Well behaved dogs I'm OK with but it seems fewer and fewer owners can keep their dogs under control and just sort of smile and laugh helplessly and say shit like 'he won't hurt you' when actually the issue isn't fear but not wanting to have muddy paws and dog hair all over me!

amymel2016, flipping hate that term !!!

KookyOliveLemur · 11/11/2024 10:17

I don’t like the sound of babies crying, the smell of their milky puke, their trip hazard buggy’s or the incessant need for mothers to dominate conversations about their little darlings. Don’t get me started on dirty cafe tables covered in half eaten food and snotty tissues. Dogs are just important to some people as kids are to others.

Tapthisscreen · 11/11/2024 10:28

You’re asking people with dogs to consider your feelings and avoid doing something they’re quite within their rights to do then insulting them. Do you not see why people aren’t that willing to change their plans for you?

bloodredfeaturewall · 11/11/2024 10:29

dogs will not pay your pension or care for you when you need it

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 11/11/2024 10:30

I like dogs in that I'll give them a quick hello/clap but my partner is allergic to dogs and they are indeed everywhere now, most poorly trained. There's no need to have them in shops and restaurants so now I’m getting increasingly anti-dog.

It's all very well saying 'just go to dog free cafe/restaurants' but I can't be assed trailing round asking if they allow dogs. It used to be the assumption was dogs weren't allowed in, now it's the other way around. My local area is saturated.

I was dismayed to see that my local Cafe Andaluz (tapas chain restaurant) now allows dogs?! The only one out of all their restaurants. Just why?

And yes your house does smell of dog.

Same logic applies to dog owners and fireworks - they are asking everyone to avoid doing something that they are quite within their rights to do ie enjoy celebrating divali or bonfire night with legal fireworks.
Dog owners cannot have everything arranged to suit their mutts

GiantHornets · 11/11/2024 10:41

BTW, when I google “dog free cafe” with my town’s name, I only get a list of dog friendly places or ideas for great doggie days out

LonelyInDville · 11/11/2024 11:13

I adore dogs but there are certain places they shouldn’t be unless they are true service dogs.

IceSkates · 11/11/2024 11:23

I live in a town that has slowly become more dogcentric. Lots of dog walkers & people visiting for the weekend etc, so I think for business owners, especially cafes/pubs, it makes sense to be dog friendly or they’d potentially lose out on a lot of custom.

I think there should always be designated area though.
Not everyone likes dogs or wants them near their kids etc, some people are allergic, some people are genuinely scared of them. (I used to work with a woman who was bit as a child & still very fearful of them)
Those things should be taken into consideration.

I don’t mind dogs but I’ve lost track of the amount of times a dog has bounded up to me or my young dcs. The owners usually just laugh and say ‘oh, he/she is friendly’
I’m sure they are. Most dogs are, but they shouldn’t be doing that, don’t assume everyone is ok with it. Lots of people are too polite to say they don’t like it.

Nobody can change my mind on the silliness of dogs being in clothes or food shops though (Except service dogs obviously)

Next they’ll be letting cats, gerbils and pet rats come in….

So your sole reason for people having kids is so they can look after you when you're old? Nice.

Are you saying yuck because you disliked my sarcasm, at the people who use those terms or because you thought j was being serious?

Sort of all 3!
I wasn't sure whether you were being sarcastic or serious, but just in case you WERE being serious I felt I had to make a comment!
But yuck definitely refers to phrases like "dog moms" as they would say in America ☹️

See it's all relative. I couldn't be in the same room as you for more than 5 minutes without getting migraine from your scented products that are laden with chemicals.

Everything is comprised of chemicals though, how on earth do you cope?
We breathe chemicals, we eat chemicals, we are chemicals.

There’s a difference between the naturally occurring g chemicals we are made of and synthetic chemical compounds, which is what most artificial fragrances are made of.

Naturally occuring is definitely not always better than synthetic though.
Tell me more about chemicals which I didn't learn in my Uni lectures, I'm intrigued. 🫣

My only hope is that should any of these cafes collapse, nobody sends in dogs to search the rubble. Imagine the uproar.

That’s fine, I hope your brats enjoy the lights.

A lady had a massive Bernese mountain dog in our pharmacy the other day! It was well behaved but it did feel a bit odd seeing it there panting away next to the vaccination waiting area!
