To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

I agree and also shops. Like clothes shops. I don't want my new clothes covered in dog hairs.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 10/11/2024 21:38

Ideally I’d have places where no kids or pets were allowed. Just adults having quiet conversations over a nice coffee.

Children and pets should be banned from public spaces between the hours of 10-4 on a Saturday and Sunday. Let us enjoy our lattes in peace

YABU for starting yet another bloody post about dogs!
It needs it own AIBU section. FFS.

Its great they are making money
Just Hope there are good places nearby for those who have allergies, phobias etc and can’t be near dogs.
Those people are losing out whilst others find it nice they can take their dogs everywhere.

Do you think they care about allergies or people who don't want dogs near them for whatever reason? They're a business, out to make money and that's it.

That would also be banning, in the main, women of child bearing or child rearing age.

Never going to happen.

Between 9am and 11pm would suit me better. No pets no children. No gatherings of more than 3 pensioners at a time. In any cafe,
coffee shop, or pub.

I’d also ban all posts on locally SM grps about ‘missing’ cats. Jeff, that cat will either be back by morning or has fucked off to another family, that’s what they do.

They might not care but as far as allergies are concerned, one would presume the law might make them think otherwise.

wastingtimeonhere · 10/11/2024 21:43

The problem with 'assistance' dogs as an exemption is that there is no legal verification for them, growing up the only assistance dogs were for the blind. Distinguishable and extremely well trained.
Now, there are dogs for multiple purposes, properly trained, they are great. This adds to numbers allowed. We then come to 'emotional support dogs' who need no training. Anyone can buy 'assistance/ emotional support' dogs jackets on Ebay/Amazon. Many places won't turn away people as they then scream discrimination. Easier to be open to all than have some leave reviews that they were discriminated against.

Cosyblankets · 10/11/2024 21:44

We just went away for the weekend. Took the dog in a pub for lunch. He sat next to us. Didn't make any noise. I always prefer to sit a bit out of the way but at least 4 different people came over to fuss him. He was happy to oblige.

MrsHemswoth · 10/11/2024 21:45

I agree! I love dogs but I really don't want so many in the cafes I go to, it's become really trendy in My area too!

A good friend of mine has a child with anaphylaxis to dog fur, which is a problem. Some of the dogs are enormous too! It's gone a bit too far I'm afraid!

SwordToFlamethrower · 10/11/2024 21:48

I hate it. Disgusting and unhygienic

Get off your high horse! Your tone and attitude makes me think I don’t care about your allergy you sound like an arse!

Stating facts that you don't happen to like doesn't make someone 'an arse'.

Yeah but then he'll have to go back in the bath so I win!
It's the mildest shampoo I can find because he is such a sensitive soul.
The human and dog relationship has been in place for 30,000 years + so I am always bemused by the attitude on here. Sure if you don't like them that's ok too and generally you can avoid them. Just check out whether a cafe or pub is dog friendly and avoid it.

Are you saying this to me or just in general? Dunno... We used to bath ours in Lavender shampoo 😁

Well that’s told me! Consider me dismounted from my high horse and on the way to the nearest dog shelter.

p.s. bet your house smells of dog

I saw a dog in a trolley in TK Maxx today.
🙄

My 3 year old son doesn't like dogs and I can pinpoint exactly what caused this.

We were leaving a pub one Saturday afternoon after having lunch. As we walked to the door we walked past a table of two adults and a dog on the floor. I guided my son past the dog, ensuring he knew it was there and didn't accidentally kick it as it was underfoot and pre-schoolers don't really look where they are going.

My son went past the dog and then walked ahead of me towards the door. A second dog then jumped up from the other side of the table and stood right in his face. The dog was taller than my son. I can honestly see why it was terrifying. The owners had it on a lead, but it had enough slack that the dog could get up and approach my son.

Obviously the dog owner said the inevitable 'he won't hurt you' tinklebollocks. As I left with my clearly terrified son I said 'OK, but it really scared him' and gave her a serious look. I think dog owners expect a 'ha ha/smile/silly me OF COURSE THE DOG IS RIGHT IN ALL SITUATIONS/smile/nod reaction but I was so pissed off on behalf of my son that I wanted the owners to bloody know it.

And now here we are, about 5 months later and my son will tell me 'I'm scared of the dogs' when we are on a walk and he's 50 meters away from going past two little poodley whatsits.

Great idea! My dog sleeps on my bed 😮I imagine that has aromatherapy properties for a lovely night of sleep!

Mine doesn't sleep on the bed... the bed isn't big enough for her and us 😆

This is why I'm single. My cat sleeps on the bed. The bed isn't big enough for a boyfriend too.

The big problem is finding dog free cafes. Unless you are local and you know, or sit and phone all cafes (which is a pain when you are hungry) you could very well be mid-lunch and then one gets brought in.
BTW, Google doesn't work.

If you want a strictly dog free cafe, ask a member of staff when you go in? If you are holidaying or on a day trip to a new area, ask on local Facebook pages. One of the locals will know of some places.

Lidlisthebusiness · 10/11/2024 22:32

I was in a cafe today and a family came in with 2 small dogs, one who made the strangest of noises. Then, another couple bought their dog in, who apparently didn't like other dogs being there and all the yapping started. I had to raise my voice to speak to my children، who were at the same table as me to be heard over the noise. I don't want to have to shout at whoever I'm eating with!

Then, on a FB group I'm on a woman was mortally offended that she was asked to leave Primark after she took her Dachshund in there. A breed notorious for using anywhere but the right place outside to toilet. Then there's the fur، licking, dander, smell. Just no.

I say all this as the owner of 2 dogs, they shouldn't be in these places.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 10/11/2024 22:57

Can't get worked up about it to be honest.

If I want to go somewhere I know dogs won't be then I choose somewhere that the business owner hasn't decided they can be.

I wouldn't go to someones house and expect them to remove their dog for me, similarly if I go to a cafe who's owner allows dogs, I expect there will be customers who have taken up the offer of allowing dogs. I don't have to engage with any of them and I'm also free to choose somewhere else that doesn't allow them.

Was it an open kitchen type of place?

No it wasn't and I'm sure you're going to say how do I know she didn't wash her hands. I don't know, but I did just see her touching a dog so that's where I draw the line.

That wasn’t, in fact, a judgement on the business owners.

I was trawling google maps earlier for dog free cafes as I was trying to find somewhere to meet a friend, and all of them said they were dog friendly in the descriptions. I typed 'Dog free cafes [my city]' into google and all I got were pages and pages of dog friendly places. I tried again with 'Cafes that don't allow dogs [my city] and got the same. Finally I tried '"dog free" and "dog-free" cafes [my county] and only one came up as it was mentioned in a review, but unfortunately it's 30 miles away. All the cafes I already know in my city welcome dogs. I genuinely have no idea how to find a dog free cafe. If you know how I can find one then please tell me, it would be really helpful.
