To dislike the increase in dogs in shops/cafes

I’ve recently noticed a huge increase in non-service dogs in cafes and shops. I was in Joules earlier today and there were 3 in there, two of which were barking and growling at each other. I was in a cafe last week with 2 in there. Surely it can’t be fun for the dog having to sit under a cramped table?

I’m very allergic to dogs and the smell absolutely sets me on edge. I don’t understand why they are allowed in? I’m not about to walk in with a cat or a rabbit so why dogs? It’s also the attitude of most (sweeping generalisation!) dog owners which annoys me, no, I don’t want to talk to your dog or about your dog. I don’t care if you say he’s friendly I don’t want it anywhere near me.

Goes without saying that service dogs are bloody amazing and they should absolutely be welcome everywhere.

I can’t imagine taking my dog into a shop, though I do take him into cafes because I usually take him with me on days out. I can’t always take him to work, so he’s alone more of the time than I’d like as my situation changed after I’d got him, hence trying to give him more of my time when I do have the chance.

It must be difficult for people with allergies and who don’t like dogs though, so I understand the changes must be unpleasant for some. I guess it’s the opposite of when smoking was suddenly banned. All the non-smokers were delighted, while those wanting to light up were not. Society changes over time.

Dawn's in trouble. Must be Tuesday.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 10/11/2024 18:35

I think it's because so many people have dogs now that businesses feel they have to pander to them.

Personally I would avoid somewhere dog friendly. That's ever since I was in a dog friendly pub & I watched a staff member petting a dog then a few minutes later walk out with plates of food. No thanks.

Pusheen467 · 10/11/2024 18:36

YABVVU OP. All the Dog Mums and Dog Dads can't possibly be expected to leave their fur babies at home.

PinkiOcelot · 10/11/2024 18:37

I wouldn’t take a dog shopping. Maybe if I was just popping in for something quick, but not actually shopping.

I did take her to a pub yesterday when I met my friends for lunch. She just lay asleep in her blanket. No bother.

I haven’t had her that long and was never bothered by dogs in cafes etc. we’re all different I suppose.

Differentstarts · 10/11/2024 18:38

Yanbu I don't want dogs jumping up me and slobbering everywhere. No I don't think your dog is cute and I don't want to fuss over it. Taking a dog out into shops and cafes is 100% for the owners benefit and not for the dog. Dogs want to play, and run in open fields and beaches not dragged around crowded shops or squahed under tables at cafes.

JackieChansBaddies · 10/11/2024 18:39

Funnily enough, I wasn’t fussed either way about this until we saw a muddy soaking wet dog in Hobbycraft today destroying paper and wool with its muddy fur and paws. Same dog was on an extendable lead and tripped someone up on the stairs.

A lot of destruction was done in about 10 minutes - although it’s clearly owner dependent!

I love do dogs though. 🐶

But if the dog just slept why not leave it to sleep at home

The smell turns my stomach, the expectation that I will talk to / be charmed by your dog is super entitled, and if there's a choice between dogs welcome vs dog-free place, it's always dog-free for me.

Dotto · 10/11/2024 18:55

Oh and I've turned down good job offers where the office welcomed multiple stinky dogs.

Might be no bother for you. Bet your dog smelt and was a trip hazard

whatatodoaboutnothing · 10/11/2024 18:59

Take my fur baby (🤣) everywhere cause why not? She’s small and no bother

In the same way I check where I can take her, you can check where you can go that wouldn’t allow dogs 🤷‍♀️

ps my dog doesn’t smell and sleeps under the table if we stop to eat, so not a trip hazard when she’s out and about

Ok 😁

TrickorTreacle · 10/11/2024 19:03

I don't understand why the dogs can't just be left at home for a few hours like they used to. It wasn't a problem a few years ago, so why has it become a problem now?

Saw a dog on a lead in a shop yesterday that was licking food items on the bottom shelves. Unhygienic.

whatatodoaboutnothing · 10/11/2024 19:03

That came out far more passionately than I meant, I’m sure your house smell beautiful 😂

Dogs smell. All of them. It’s like when smokers didn’t understand why non smokers didn’t like the smell as ‘doesn’t smell’🙄

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 10/11/2024 19:06

I absolutely love dogs. I love to see them and stroke them if they're happy with it.

But i absolutely detest this need to take dogs everywhere.

I have a child that is terified of dogs ever since one "friendly" dog, tried to go for her in a furniture shop (yes people take their dogs furniture shopping it seems). It makes going out shopping or eating anywhere a bit frustrating. Especially in busy cafes or restaurants where the only table is next to a dog.

Leave the dogs at home!

I also hate when people are walking their dog off lead and they run up to you and your small terified child and they casually say "don't worry he's friendly" as they carry on walking. Sure to you he is. But to my small child he's the size of a lion running towards her! Control your dog!

ExtraOnions · 10/11/2024 19:06

You have a whole swathe of dog owners, who have never bothered to train thier dogs how to be left on thier own. Hence why we now have dogs everywhere .. it’s poor behaviour by owners

As an aside I was in a cafe the other week, and a big dog was drooling / slobbering all over the table… the owner was mopping it up with napkins .. it made vile viewing.

I am also allergic .. the “fur baby” types don’t give a shit, their dog should be able to go everywhere and that’s it. I like nothing more then an allergy flare up, as I’ve sat in a seat someone had left hurt “fur baby” sit on previously.

K0OLA1D · 10/11/2024 19:07

My dog smells of dog. Fuck me who'da thunk it.

TeenLifeMum · 10/11/2024 19:09

I don’t take dogs in shops but with all the thefts, I do see why people don’t leave them tied up outside like they used to. Taking my dog to the pub for lunch after a winter dog walk is one of my favourite activities though.

PinkTonic · 10/11/2024 19:10

They do smell and often get in the way. It’s offensive that non service dogs are now allowed in so many cafes and restaurants especially as their doting owners often don’t keep them under control. I don’t want to sit on a seat where someone has let their dog put it’s dirty feet and arse. A country pub, popular with walkers, dogs in the bar is expected. A city restaurant, not expected or necessary or acceptable.

amoreoamicizia · 10/11/2024 19:11

It depends on the café and the shop. E.g. there was a dog in the M&S food hall the other day which felt weird and unhygienic but in a relaxed café it seems OK if they are quiet and under control. I think it was the contact/potential contact with food that felt wrong in M&S.
