Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

What's the point of this thread? To give people tips on nicking shopping? To wind people up? Anyway you've shown you can't be trusted not to nick stuff so I really hope I don't know you IRL.

OneTC · 07/11/2024 14:38

I don't really care about people ripping off supermarkets but I still think they're all thieving little rats.

JimPanzee · 07/11/2024 14:38

It's stealing, pure and simple!
But you seem OK with that, even proud of your deviousness.

Mylovelylittlepetbedbug · 07/11/2024 14:40

It was only groceries? From a big supermarket who can afford it? So who else would you consider fair game. ? You have told us what you are and seem quite proud of it. Disgusting behaviour .

Owly11 · 07/11/2024 14:40

So it's not just theft it's conspiracy to steal. And then you broadcast the idea on social media. I really hope this is fake. This is a different league to finding an extra item in your shopping and not mentioning it. Thinking that others would do it too is also a way of making yourself feel better. It demonstrates your moral compass which seems to be 'I don't care about committing crime as long as I don't get caught'.

This is exactly what I assumed. They are a supermarket not the FBI.

Astonishing that people on here so are holier-than-thou. She cancelled it and they made the mistake - so what? It's not stealing. FFS get a bloody grip!

MrsSunshine2b · 07/11/2024 14:41

I love how no-one on Mumsnet would ever do something like this even though stats on this kind of thing show that almost everyone would, given half the chance.

How much sympathy do you think you, as a regular person, would get if you reported a theft in which you brought the things to someone's door and handed them over, after they specifically told you not to?

Pretty sure Tesco's profit margins will quickly recover from this shocking heist. 😂

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 07/11/2024 14:41

I would totally...

She did it on purpose because it had worked for her friend, it wasn't an accident.

They won't lose profit, they'll just increase the prices for consumers instead. Which affects everyone.

It's not a "mistake", the shopping will already have been packed onto the van. Which is why is can't be cancelled on the day.
Taking things you haven't paid for is stealing.

It's not 'holier than thou' not to steal. 🫣

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

It’s really not about they won’t find out is it. It’s about having a moral compass. There’s lots of things one could do on the basis no one would find out. Crikey.

ImNunTheWiser · 07/11/2024 14:43

Don't judge others by your own, rock bottom, standards.

Clarice99 · 07/11/2024 14:44

Dress it up how you want @Ponter However , you are a thief and a liar.

Of course it' stealing. She's made no effort to pay. So dishonest!

Ponter · 07/11/2024 14:34

I don’t believe in karma. Plenty of examples of twats never getting their comeuppance.

The supermarket made the error.

I’ve never once stolen previously so i can’t be that much of a degenerate

You accept you have stolen but still think it's acceptable because you've never done it before and it was the supermarket's fault ?
I've heard better defences.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 07/11/2024 14:45

Yes, because that will have been the only instance of theft from Tesco that day, won't it?
FFS

potatocakesinprogress · 07/11/2024 14:45

The only people saying "the majority/everyone would do it" are the ones that believe everyone has standards as low as them.

I had a similar thing happen when I reported something from Amazon as not turning up - it ended up arriving 3 months later, I still reported that to them via the live chat. (I ended up making £20 out of it as they originally refunded me and gave me a £20 gift card for the inconvenience on top, they told me to keep it all and it was fine. And I have a clear conscience as well as my £20, so, bonus).

Which stats are those?

Most people are honest IME. Thieving rats like to tell themselves that's how everyone else thinks because they simply can't imagine being honest. Honest people broadly feel the same way about stealing, they just don't understand it.

LunaMay · 07/11/2024 14:46

I wouldn't do that no, no one i know would. I've had extra groceries delivered with mine a few times, i knew they'd tell me to keep them after the first instance but i still always call and let them know cause its the right thing to do? Although i could have down without the 3 tubs of chicken hearts 🙃

isteppedintoanavalanche · 07/11/2024 14:46

I'd probably assume that I'd get charged for it and not even think about it again tbh

tilypu · 07/11/2024 14:48

No, I know for sure I wouldn't. It would just be automatic for me to say to the driver that I had cancelled the order. Afterwards I might joke to people 'dammit, I could have had that for free!', but I wouldn't mean it.

Hoppinggreen · 07/11/2024 14:49

FanofLeaves · 07/11/2024 13:57

Oh so it’s not even necessary items, it’s luxury food and a piss up. In that case no, I think you’re a twat.

Yep
It was deliberate and it wasn't like you needed it
Blatant theft, not necessarily judging as nobody is perfect but at least admit what you are rather than try and excuse it and claim that most people would do the same
