Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

Like a pp, a similar thing happened to me from a well known wine merchant. They delivered my Christmas wine order then 3 days later delivered it again. I rang up but they had no record of the second delivery so told me to keep it. I wouldn’t have just kept it though without saying anything. I’m not a thief.

It’s very different if it’s their error and they tell you to keep it.

It’s a bit of a pain for the OP life admin wise but I’d rather let the supermarket know and them say I could keep the order rather than me keeping it and saying nothing.

A similar thing happened to us but we didn’t realise at the time. I took some items off at the last minute that my husband had put on but we didn’t actually need, I wasn’t home when the delivery arrived so it was only a few hours later that i was questing my husband as to why all this stuff I’d removed had arrived (and accusing him of putting it back on 🙈😂) then we realised what had happened and that we hadn’t actually paid for the things I’d removed. Not a lot we could do at that point other than take it all back to the shop 🤷‍♀️

That makes no sense. If they knew to give it to you they had it to charge you for.

HPFA · 07/11/2024 16:57

No. I once got home from a day's shopping and found I hadn't been charged for an item. I went back the next day and paid it.

Chipsahoy · 07/11/2024 16:58

I found out that asda cancelled my order and refunded it. I saw it when I was looking at my orders. This had happened months before and i definitely had the order and no notification they’d refunded.
I then went and checked bank and sure enough it had been refunded. I didn’t call them and tell them they’d made a mistake. I think I would have if I’d had noticed on the day. Months later? Nope.

HappyTwo · 07/11/2024 16:59

You accepted it - they have your credit card so sure they can charge you.
You said you didn't plan it - but you sure planned to try and scam them when the van showed up!

JollyPinkFox · 07/11/2024 15:53

Sure. Stealing is wrong. I don’t believe for one second that 86% of you wouldn’t keep that food though.

Don't judge others by your low standards.

Notreat · 07/11/2024 17:02

No it's stealing
I would have told the delivery driver I had cancelled the delivery. They might have still left it as it had been packed and they probably couldn't take it back. But I would have been honest

Oh give it a rest. I haven't stolen a thing in my life that I can think of. You lot are the judgemental ones, why do you care if OP has 'stolen' one food delivery? Of what consequence is it to you and your life? Get off your high horse bootlicking for a supermarket. It's embarrassing.

Arlanymor · 07/11/2024 17:03

There is literally no such thing as a victimless crime, I wish that saying had never come into common parlance. No, I wouldn’t, there is hardship for someone, somewhere further down the line - maybe for many if prices have to increase to absorb theft - it is theft pure and simple.

Waffle78 · 07/11/2024 17:03

I would have had to tell them. I ordered a kettle in my supermarket delivery once. But I was given 2 by mistake in the rush of getting my shopping in I hadn't noticed until he had gone. The kettles were reduced to £25 so I'm guessing someone never got theirs.

I checked my delivery details and I had definitely only paid for one kettle. I took it to customer services showed them my receipt and said if I kept it that would have been theft.

HPFA · 07/11/2024 17:04

I've always thought that the "it's OK to steal from big companies" line is pathetic.

If you think supermarkets etc are immoral then buy your goods from small shops and suppliers and help them. Or would that involve some actual inconvenience on your part?

Serencwtch · 07/11/2024 17:06

I work for a supermarket & when you place an order the money is placed on 'hold' by your bank. If you have accepted the delivery you will be charged for the items you accepted.

I don't know if other supermarkets work in the same way but even if you did get away with it you would get your account & address blocked for future deliveries.

AngelinaFibres · 07/11/2024 17:07

If I was ever tempted to do something appalling I would hear my mother's voice in my head "Well it's between you and your conscience". Middle class crime is crime nonetheless. My exhusband would have thought it was absolutely fine. You are as scummy as he was.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 07/11/2024 17:08

Didn’t happen. Online grocery shopping (with the exception of the Whoosh/Door Dash deliveries that comes 20 mins after ordering) closes the evening before the delivery day.

Precisely to stop time wasters and piss takers like you.

Butterworths · 07/11/2024 17:08

I am fascinated by how many people think that prices are increased based on how much theft has happened. How do you imagine that even happens? So in a year with less theft the owners think "oh people are buying our beans at £2 but we've made enough money this year so we can reduce the price"?

They charge what they can based on market forces.

Thindog · 07/11/2024 17:10

No.
It is stealing and I am not a thief.

MummyMags3 · 07/11/2024 17:12

I cancelled a delivery after the cut off point because of a family emergency. The shopping arrived as we were rushing out of the door and I explained that I had cancelled. The driver took it back. Some supermarkets allow you to edit or cancel your delivery up to 3am on the morning of delivery, depending on the time slot booked.

Partly market forces but also partly because of their need to mitigate against theft by spending money on a range of deterrents… it’s all here: https://www.grocerygazette.co.uk/2023/10/05/shoplifting-supermarkets-costs/ - do you think they just absorb all these costs without any impact on pricing? If so, you’re wrong, I’m sorry, but you are. I have a friend who does this exact job in Sainsburys - costs ARE passed on to the consumer.

Of course they price to account for theft. We're talking tens or hundreds of millions a year for somewhere like Tesco. All that loss gets built into pricing for everyone else. With shoplifting on the rise prise will have to increase. You think they're going to absorb those losses 😂

I don’t believe in karma. Plenty of examples of twats never getting their comeuppance.

The supermarket made the error.

I’ve never once stolen previously so i can’t be that much of a degenerate

Would you accept that attitude if someone stole your car?

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 07/11/2024 17:15

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:57

No hand on heart I didn’t orchestrate the whole thing but I know my friend had cancelled once from the same supermarket and the van still showed up. So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it.

You and your friends both have low morals if you think this is okay.

The OP said she cancelled on the day - I don't think she meant 3am

I don't think this happened either but well done OP for goading everyone

This!

Maria1979 · 07/11/2024 17:17

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:55

I’m not boasting. Never once stole before. Always try do the right thing normally. I just chanced it. I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it.

That's the thing with high morals (or atleast higher than yours); I wouldn't be able to peacefully enjoy the wine and the meat, and it has nothing to do with me being vegetarian.
