Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

Shoplifting puts prices up and they are already high enough. People like you cost us all money.

EdithStourton · 07/11/2024 17:19

No,
Because it means that people with less you (as well as more than you) are are subsidising you.
And it's just dishonest.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 07/11/2024 17:20

No I don't believe the majority of people would do this, I think it's disgraceful.

LadyGabriella · 07/11/2024 17:22

I’m all for not correcting errors on the self scan when they get the label wrong or whatever, but this is just deception and stealing.

Waitingforthecold · 07/11/2024 17:22

JustWicked · 07/11/2024 15:49

Luck?

Well presumably the OP thinks it was a lucky or happy accident, resulting in her having more funds that she was expecting. Not sure why the semantics are being picked up on!

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:59

Well I would just make up that there had been a communication error with husband.

I know it’s a mumsnetism, but you sound absolutely delightful.

Everyone is so righteous, and full of shit.

Nah, some people just have some morals. Who knew eh?

The OP said she cancelled on the day - I don't think she meant 3am

I don't think this happened either but well done OP for goading everyone

I didn’t say I cancelled at 3am. I cancelled by phone the morning the delivery was due as we had had a family emergency. They cancelled the order and the delivery still arrived as we were leaving. I sent it back and wasn’t charged - I can’t comment on whether I would have been, had I done what the OP did though.

Octoberdreaming · 07/11/2024 17:23

No, of course I wouldn’t knowingly steal.

Whichever way you try to minimise it you are a thief and a fraudster, and posting for validation here to try and clear your conscience is unlikely to happen as most people are decent.

Butchyrestingface · 07/11/2024 17:24

No, I'm sure I do other things that would scare the Mumsnet horses but I'm not wilfully dishonest.

I would be reluctant to judge someone on the bones of their arse doing this, although it would probably be Asda or Tesco they'd try this on, rather than Waitrose luxury items. That clear doesn't apply to OP though.

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

Jesus Christ. The fact that you have now admitted doing it deliberately is disgusting. You even lied by omission in your original post.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 07/11/2024 17:28

Good Grief ! you actually let your fingers type that out onto a social media website.

Shame on you, theft is theft.

You admit later on that you knew what you were doing as a friend had done it too. and thus thought / hoped you would get away with it too !!!

A decent person would not have accepted the delivery.

A decent person would be donating the non perishable items to a food bank, and a decent person would be enquiring which charitable organisation could make use of the perishable items...

Maia77 · 07/11/2024 17:28

Definitely not.

AlteredStater · 07/11/2024 17:29

No.

mumedu · 07/11/2024 17:29

Thieving is not ok. The rest of the customers will end up paying for your 'free' delivery.

mumedu · 07/11/2024 17:33

Diomi · 07/11/2024 17:19

Shoplifting puts prices up and they are already high enough. People like you cost us all money.

You are not just stealing from the supermarket, but you are stealing from staff and other customers, who will inevitably shoulder the burden of your dishonesty.

HallidayJones6779 · 07/11/2024 17:33

I think knowingly doing this is something to be ashamed of. I’m a firm believer in you get back what you put out, whether that’s immediately or at a later stage!

Beekeepingmum · 07/11/2024 17:33

As CS Lewis says Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. Personally integrity is important to me.

Breadcat24 · 07/11/2024 17:35

Really awful deliberate theft.
It makes me sad- don't people have any morals anymore?

thebigbrownbear · 07/11/2024 17:36

Of course we all would and the posters who said they wouldn't are lying. Who wouldn't take a free food delivery from a large supermarket who wouldn't notice the loss

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 07/11/2024 17:37

Everyone is so righteous, and full of shit.

Maybe it's about how you're brought up and your moral compass? If I'd done what the OP did I'd lose a bit of respect for myself. It would gnaw at my conscience.

thebigbrownbear · 07/11/2024 17:37

And i won't be commenting to anyone who flames me

LemonSherbertDabs · 07/11/2024 17:37

I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it.

Bit of a contradiction.

You cancelled it but when it turned up and you decided you could keep it without paying, suddenly you needed the majority of groceries.

It's stealing.

AgnesX · 07/11/2024 17:38

No, because I'm not a thief. Add you to the rest of the thievery around and no wonder prices are going up.

Shufflebumnessie · 07/11/2024 17:38

And people wonder why retailers are putting their prices up, some of it's because of the amount of items being stolen by people like you!
I sincerely hope the company realised and take the owed payment.
