Neighbour stealing parcel

Littlesandjoolz · 05/11/2024 19:08

So basically I ordered an IPad Air for my daughters birthday from Currys. It was meant to be delivered yesterday, but they left a card saying it was delivered to the nieghbour next door but one. I went round and asked about it and they denied all knowledge. I believed them as they have always been pretty good neighbours and taken in parcels for me previously.

I bumped into a different neighbour and mentioned how I was panicking that I'd missed the parcel and the courier was messing me around when the neighbour said they had seen the courier knock at mine and then take the parcel to the other neighbours and they did take it in! I then went on the tracking details on the website and theres a photo of it clearly being handed to the neighbour. I went back round and the neighbour slammed the door in my face.

I've called the police and they've noted it but basically said they aren't going to do anything and aren't even prepared to come and talk to the neighbohr. What can I do? Will curries send a replacement as I haven't had the iPad? or can they at least block the iPad that the neighbour has stolen? Its £600 and is a lot to lose.

Not a police matter.

Littlesandjoolz · 10/11/2024 21:25

@EatingAMandarinwhat theft? I think it is

Still no update from dpd or currys 😒 I'll be going to the bank next week if it isn't sorted.

Did your partner go round to see the neighbours again? I wouldn't be able to leave it tbh! have you posted a photo of the delivery showing their location on social media or similar?

Sleepytiredyawn · 10/11/2024 22:11

If you have paid on your Credit Card start a dispute, they will hold the balance so you won’t incur any interest until you get an answer from Curries. If you have proof then they usually refund the money and chase it themselves.

I know you never chose a neighbour as an option if you weren’t in but this is exactly why I don't do this as you aren’t covered if you do so this will go in your favour also.

OhcantthInkofaname · 10/11/2024 22:12

Keep updating as I'm interested in how they handle thefts in the UK.

From a consumer protection point of view, your contract is with Curry’s, and regardless of what the delivery company has done with the package (unless YOU designated that particular neighbour as an alternate delivery spot, which you didn’t do), it is the responsibility of Curry’s to refund or replace.

Gemmawemma9 · 10/11/2024 22:27

I would be so angry I would bang their door in and raise hell all over the street. Shame them into returning it. The cheek of them!

Cojones · 10/11/2024 22:32

So sorry you’re having to deal with this OP.

For items like this, don’t Currys and the like say they will only deliver to the recipient? And won’t leave it with a neighbour for this very reason. So if DPD have broken this rule, that’s on them and Currys.

I had some tech delivered (might have been a new phone) and they wouldn’t hand it over until I’d given them the password I had been emailed.

Hope you get it back unopened or a brand new replacement.

Well more fool curry’s then, because the longer they take to investigate it the less chances they have of getting the iPad back. It’s ultimately their property at the moment, not yours. Try not to worry yourself because it seems like you have good evidence to resolve this in your favour, and hopefully before Christmas.

You’d think so but this isn’t consistent. I spent £1500 on an iPad Pro and pencil from Apple directly recently. Probably one of my most expensive purchases. They shipped it via DHL and I ended up meeting the driver by chance on the street as opposed to my front door (he delivered early - I ran up to his van to prevent missing the delivery). All he did was ask for my name and hand the parcels over to me. I thought it was a bit lax considering the value. I also bought an iPhone 16 Pro from John Lewis of a similar value and the DPD driver didn’t even ask me for the password.

And they wanted a signature for a £20 Advent calendar as some of the chocolates had alcohol...

Did Op designate her neighbour to accept her parcel?

not necessarily. the only place I've ever put as a designated safe place for parcels is our bin shed, next to the front door.
thankfully, our neighbour is an absolute star, and they do tend to drop them with him. he's a good neighbour. if he's got excess food he comes round and offers it to us (I think he's got friends that drop him off food, and if it's something he doesn't like, he gives us first refusal)
he takes in parcels all the time (I'm on the Amazon Vine programme, so I get them most days) he comes around and knocks on the door if it looks like it's going to rain and our washing is out or the car window is a bit ajar. or if there's a parcel left on our doorstep, as a lot of them don't even bother knocking anymore. we're very lucky to have him as a neighbour, but I've never designated him as where to leave parcels. so we quite often end up giving him a few cans of lager as a thank you, which he appreciates a lot.

Why don't you keep knocking on their door?? If they shut the door on your knock again, until they decide to have a conversation with you or they call the police. If police is called you tell them to give you your iPad and you'll be on your way. Your aim is to bring the police to their door.

Tessasanderson · 12/11/2024 14:56

If you paid with credit card it is extremely quick and easy to get a refund from your card supplier. Anything like this we purchase on CC even if we have the cash. I wouldn't even bother with the neighbours or the police. Contact CC company and state item hasnt been recived and you want it charged back to Currys. Not your issue who and how it wasnt delivered.

Then bide your time for say.....6 months then do something to make your neighbours regret it so you get some mild satisfaction.

They refused to replace it, so I had to do a chargeback with my bank

A year later, how is your relationship with this neigbour now? Did you post it all over social media? On the estate group? Do your other neighbours know they are thieves?
