Neighbour stealing parcel

Littlesandjoolz · 05/11/2024 19:08

So basically I ordered an IPad Air for my daughters birthday from Currys. It was meant to be delivered yesterday, but they left a card saying it was delivered to the nieghbour next door but one. I went round and asked about it and they denied all knowledge. I believed them as they have always been pretty good neighbours and taken in parcels for me previously.

I bumped into a different neighbour and mentioned how I was panicking that I'd missed the parcel and the courier was messing me around when the neighbour said they had seen the courier knock at mine and then take the parcel to the other neighbours and they did take it in! I then went on the tracking details on the website and theres a photo of it clearly being handed to the neighbour. I went back round and the neighbour slammed the door in my face.

I've called the police and they've noted it but basically said they aren't going to do anything and aren't even prepared to come and talk to the neighbohr. What can I do? Will curries send a replacement as I haven't had the iPad? or can they at least block the iPad that the neighbour has stolen? Its £600 and is a lot to lose.

I’d leave it there tbh - what if they’ve opened or used it and then your partner managed to get it back - you then have a used item on your hands

I was thinking that. Theres no way they haven't opened it and fiddled about with it. I thinks he's talking about the principle of it all.

I'd fucking shame them. Send a not to every neighbour saying they cant be trusted

This. Absolute scumbag behaviour.

I spoke to the police again, they asked me if id reported it to Currys and i told them yes I had and Currys had put in for an investigation with dpd, so they've said to wait to find out the outcome of that 😒 very frustrating. She also asked me for the tracking info and looked up the photo herself and said yes she could see my name on the parcel but the door and surrounding features looked like the rest of my street, so I presume she also looked on street maps. My partner is away until Friday morning, but I think he's going to go round and demand it back. I feel sick with confrontation.

Ridiculous you have a witness that saw them take it in at TOD. Does your DP know any burly rugby players that could go and demand it back?

I don’t think this is as hopeless as it sounds. The police need confirmation from the Currys/DPD investigation that the item was delivered and to which address. They can’t act without that information as they wouldn’t otherwise have reasonable grounds to do so. When you get a response from Currys, you can let the police know, and give them the name of your nice neighbour who saw the thieving neighbour take in the parcel. At that point the police have enough to act. You have reported a theft, the police ought to act at the point at which you can show there is sufficient evidence to do so. If they still refuse, then complain.

I wouldn’t let your partner go round tomorrow. It will only cause difficulties in any investigation and damage your relationship with the neighbours - obviously you don’t want to be friends with the thieving bastards, but living so close means it is best to not create a ruckus.

But again, as I previously posted, your best bet still remains them thinking the police are going to investigate and it could result in an arrest. I suggested a road WhatsApp group if that exists, but if not, a letter photocopied and sent to ALL neighbours on the street so it doesn’t look like you are singling anyone out, saying that Currys have advised you to go to the police but you want to check in case someone has taken it in and forgotten about it, gives them the opportunity to give it back without losing face. (Though you will always know that cannot be trusted!)

Why weren’t you in for the delivery?
DPD give plenty of delivery notifications, a one hour slot and you can track how many stops away the driver is.
Silly to miss a valuable delivery.

Yeah OP just drive home from work once you get the delivery notification. Doesn't matter if you're mid surgery or conducting a funeral or live an hour away and the slot starts in half an hour.
Or book a day off with an hour's notice.
Do people live in the real world?

Bubblebuttress · 09/11/2024 08:06

Did you partner go round? It’s just awful they stole your parcel

queenofthewild · 06/11/2024 12:48

There is a small chance the neighbour is telling the truth.

Last year a courier shoved a package in my hand and took a photo. When I looked at the label I said "this isn't for me. It's for the house at the top of the street". Courier apologised and took the parcel back. Courier then never delivered the parcel to the intended recipient.

Intended recipient visited me at my house asking for the parcel, but I didn't have it. He now thinks I'm a thief.

I had this once too, luckily they did eventually get it but I felt really guilty eventually though I hadn't done anything wrong!

TossedSaladandSE · 05/11/2024 21:08

Then don't order expensive items to be delivered when you're at work

I genuinely cannot believe people think this is any way the OPs fault. The courier was supposed to take it back to the depot if she wasn't in. Similarly her neighbours are fuckkng scumbags. My neighbours and I take parcels for each other all the time. I work from home and get a lot (not a ridiculous amount) and it's absolutely no bother.

Selttan · 09/11/2024 08:22

I find it appalling that couriers or posties will take a parcel to a neighbour rather than return it to the depot or post office.

I'm in Australia and I am not aware of anywhere that does this. If you don't have an authority to leave on your property in a safe place (if it's allowed some senders do not allow this option), it's taken to the depot or local post office.

CurlewKate · 09/11/2024 08:22

"Did you give instructions to leave it with that / a neighbour?"

This is completely irrelevant.

Do you have a local FB page? If so, post the picture on it saying something like "Anyone recognise this house? My parcel was delivered there."

Clarefromwork · 09/11/2024 08:45

On our local Facebook group, people post stuff like this all the time “my parcel wasn’t delivered to me and I’m not sure where it’s gone, it was delivered here adds photo

People will then say ‘ohh that looks like so and sos house’ or ‘its number ** house’. This might then pressure them to give it back if they have it.

CosyLemur · 09/11/2024 09:47

Littlesandjoolz · 05/11/2024 20:57

No I didn't.

Unless you checked the don't leave with a neighbour box then you actually did.

There was a post on here the other day about "I'm always taking parcels in for my neighbours and it's annoying" they were told to tell the neighbour they hadn't got it and hold on to it for a few days to make the neighbour sweat!
This was your neighbour wasn't it - seeing as you admit they regularly take in parcels!
You knew an expensive item was being delivered and you still went out because you knew the neighbours would be in; and they've got pissed off with being the local post office!

If it looks like all the other doors how do you know it wasn't the helpful neighbour who told you where it was that took it?

Actually with DPD when you get the tracking info it will tell you that if you're not in then they'll leave it with a neighbour or in a safe place. You have to reply to the tracking if you want it taken back to the depot.
By not replying that you want it taken back then leaving it with a neighbour then forms part of the contract; so it was her fault for not reading the contract correctly and acting if she didn't want it leaving with a neighbour.

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/11/2024 09:59

Put a note through the neighbours door.

Dear Neighbours

I have reported your refusal to hand over my parcel to the police as theft and have a crime reference number.
I am giving you 24 hours to hand over the parcel and provided it has not been opened I will contact them again and ask them to close the case. Otherwise I will leave the authorities to deal with the matter as they wish.

Regards

Neighbour at no 10.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me when DPD delivered my switch to a neighbour (also ordered from currys!)

4 month investigation later, they refused to refund or replacement because my DPD app stated it would be left with a neighbour at 27 if I wasn't in, as apparently I had requested this for a delivery 2 years previously with dpd so they had this saved as a preference!!

OldScribbler · 09/11/2024 19:06

Spirallingdownwards · 05/11/2024 19:16

Raise it with Curry's. The onus is on them to ensure it is delivered to you. If you did not give instructions to leave with the neighbour they have no delivered it. Indeed you have proof of delivery elsewhere.

They should send you a new one. It is for then to pursue the neighbour direct or via police. If the police gave you a reference give that to Curry's too.

That makes sense

Craftyclaws04 · 09/11/2024 19:19

I've had the same when Evri deliver my parcels, they never deliver to me, but to the nasty woman next door. They courier dumps my parcel on her doorstep and I've never designated her.
I'd contact your bank to see if you can get a refund, or complain via www.resolver.co.uk

Any update, OP?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 05/11/2024 19:14

Is it possible they are sick of bringing in parcels for you and assuming it's a cheap one to hold on to and 'teach you a lesson'? (I don't agree with this but have seen it suggested on here!)

I'd drop round a note saying please check with all members of household as their details have been passed onto the police as there's been proof of delivery. They don't know the police aren't likely to do much and you may find it makes it's way back!

All you have to do is refuse to accept if you're the neighbour

Hididi11 · 09/11/2024 20:01

I knew someone who had this happen to them

They strategically played dumb and acted like they had no idea what neighbour had received the parcel
And
Posted the picture that the postal company had sent them making it very obvious who it was.
Then posted that pic on all the neighbourhood WhatsApp and Facebook group.
Then
Everybody commented on how it was number 44 as they had the same door colour and the same paving stones as the pic.
