hate when people say ‘this’?

It’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I get that people use it to agree, but can’t they just say why they agree or add something to the conversation? ‘“this” feels lazy, like they can’t be bothered to type more than four characters. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I think it kills discussion. Anyone else find this annoying, or am I being petty?

Stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit instagram feeds then.

Falalalalah · 04/11/2024 16:33

You're being petty. In terms of the annoying stuff some people do on here, that doesn't even register.

I presume OP means on here? I see it all the time on threads, it’s particularly annoying when they quote a big massive 8 paragraph post just to say ‘this!’ ‘100 times this!’ ‘As usual, first post nails it!’

Are you okay? I’m talking about here on Mumsnet actually. Sounds like you need to take your own advice.

Devilsmommy · 04/11/2024 16:34

It's the shortest quickest way of agreeing with a post🤷 maybe they're not in the mood to type an essay that succinctly says I agree

Edited

Thanks for the clarification. I very rarely see it here

nocoolnamesleft · 04/11/2024 16:39

I think people use it on here because there is no visible upvote, just the only visible to the recipient thanks.

You do see it quite often in other places even where there is a like/upvote option. People do it for additional emphasis.

This.

@HonestPayforHonestWork 🤭😁

Ella31 · 04/11/2024 16:50

I actually don't mind it. It sort of validates a point when little else needs saying.

This.

Put your phone away and go to the naughty step 😆😆

Arlanymor · 04/11/2024 16:54

Reasons for it are:

  • No visible upvoting option
  • Sometimes someone else has said something so succinct that you don’t feel you could add more what they’ve articulated, so it’s the quickest way to share your view and lend your weight to the conversation
  • It’s an established way of contributing to most online forums, including outside of Mumsnet, so people use it as a part of the vernacular

For all those reasons, no it doesn’t annoy me.

cherrysodas · 04/11/2024 17:09

The phrase you used to another poster “are you okay?” Is much more irritating. It’s a way of implying she’s stupid which is very unpleasant.

Excellently articulated. Was going to type 'this' but didn't want to rile all the people it does annoy😂

The icing on the cake would be if she ended it with ‘HTH’.

No, l genuinely asked if she was okay because her response came across quite passionate and intense. She made assumptions about where I’m seeing these comments, saying “stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit Instagram feeds” and repeated “bullshit” twice. Just wanted to check in, since it didn’t seem like a typical response to what I’d posted.

This sort of disingenuous nonsense is considerably more annoying than ‘this’.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 04/11/2024 17:20

This! ThisThisThisThisThisThisTHIS.

On a serious note, I'd much rather they just type 'This' than read the exact same thing seventeen squillion times.
