hate when people say ‘this’?

It’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I get that people use it to agree, but can’t they just say why they agree or add something to the conversation? ‘“this” feels lazy, like they can’t be bothered to type more than four characters. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I think it kills discussion. Anyone else find this annoying, or am I being petty?

It's the shortest quickest way of agreeing with a post🤷 maybe they're not in the mood to type an essay that succinctly says I agree

this 😉

GrandHighPoohbah · 04/11/2024 19:24

I think it's a useful barometer of overall sentiment, given that the thanks button is not visible to other people. There are many other things on MN that I find more irritating than this.

No, l genuinely asked if she was okay because her response came across quite passionate and intense. She made assumptions about where I’m seeing these comments, saying “stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit Instagram feeds” and repeated “bullshit” twice. Just wanted to check in, since it didn’t seem like a typical response to what I’d posted.

You might as well have said 'are you on glue?' as it was that transparent.

I use it all the time and I'll happily keep annoying people. 😂

Yes! (See what I didn't do there?)

I like to see all the Thises and exactlys because it interests me to see which posts have resonated sufficiently posters want to go public with their agreement.

sprigatito · 04/11/2024 20:04

I was going to answer in good faith, but then I read the thread and realised how chippy and passive aggressive you are. So I won't bother.

The phrase you used to another poster “are you okay?” Is much more irritating. It’s a way of implying she’s stupid which is very unpleasant.

Agree.

Is that any better?

Incognitoburrito88 · 04/11/2024 20:25

Doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, if someone quotes me and I get a ‘this’ it makes me feel validated.

SabreIsMyFave · 04/11/2024 20:31

I think a visible 'thanks' button is a dreadful idea. This place gets cliquey enough as it is, with pile-ons, and people having pops at people, and talking down to them, and mocking them, and goading them, and deriding them.

Just like with the hidden 'thanks' button, people will say 'oh, look how much more correct I am than YOU. I have 10 more thanks than you ha ha ha ha ha....!'

Dreadful idea. And this is why Mumsnet will never say yes to it. It will just create cliques, and bullying. I have seen it happen before on other forums.

I actually don't mind it. It sort of validates a point when little else needs saying.

Are you OK though?

You sound angry.

Did you actually read my comment? It included a rebuttal: “Are you okay? I’m talking about here on Mumsnet. Sounds like you need to take your own advice.” So it wasn’t just a lazy response, as you suggest.

Also, believe it or not, there’s a life outside of Mumsnet. The phrase “are you okay?” has been around for ages and isn’t unique to this site. It’s something I’ve heard since I was younger. It seems like you might be taking this a bit too seriously, or maybe you’re just someone who’s terminally online.

Saucer of milk over here!!

This, with bells on.
Is this OK? I added a little bit at the end to make it special.

'this' is also annoying. Aggressive statement that someone is sick/mentally unwell because you don't like what they've said.

HamptonPlace · 05/11/2024 11:37

cherrysodas · 04/11/2024 17:32

Good I’m glad to hear it. Because it certainly came across as very sarcastic.

i don't think anyone believes you about 'genuine concern'
