hate when people say ‘this’?

TipsyLemonCritic · 04/11/2024 16:18

It’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I get that people use it to agree, but can’t they just say why they agree or add something to the conversation? ‘“this” feels lazy, like they can’t be bothered to type more than four characters. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I think it kills discussion. Anyone else find this annoying, or am I being petty?

OP posts:

loropianalover · 04/11/2024 16:33

I presume OP means on here? I see it all the time on threads, it’s particularly annoying when they quote a big massive 8 paragraph post just to say ‘this!’ ‘100 times this!’ ‘As usual, first post nails it!’

I have a deep loathing for people who quote massive posts, and just say 'THIS!' Or just put a short response. Even if it's a longer response, why the fuck are people quoting an 8 to 10 paragraph post that's 800-1000 words long?! It's also annoying when they quote a long OP, or quote a long post that has only just gone on before theirs. Should be outlawed LOL. 'First response nails it' annoys me too. Especially as quite often, it doesn't 'nail it!'

@cherrysodas · Today 17:09

The phrase you used to another poster “are you okay?” Is much more irritating. It’s a way of implying she’s stupid which is very unpleasant.

Yeah I agree. The OP looks like she doesn't like people challenging her though. Condescendingly asking 'are you OK?' just because someone said something she didn't like. It's so patronising. Hmm See also 'you sound angry.' A Mumsnet response that is designed to shut women down if they speak up, or aren't nice and fluffy, and don't subscribe to #bekind! There was nothing 'aggressive' or rude about @Ablondiebutagoody's response (at 16.31) FGS. Why are people so fragile and so easily offended? Accusing posters of being 'aggressive' if they are a bit forthright!

Even worse though, is when someone says 'you sound unhinged.' Really nasty comment, implying that the person is mentally unwell/not right in the head. Horrible personal attack. (And against the rules.)

GroovyChick87 · 04/11/2024 18:21

Sometimes someone puts it better than I can say myself and there's no need to expand on it.

Stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit instagram feeds then.

^^ this.

i have no need to reinvent the wheel when someone has already typed what I was going to say.

sorry it annoys you, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Suffolker · 04/11/2024 18:26

Yes, it’s definitely annoying (but nowhere near as annoying as “gives me the ick”, which is now so overused it has lost even the slightest whiff of originality or wit)

No, l genuinely asked if she was okay because her response came across quite passionate and intense. She made assumptions about where I’m seeing these comments, saying “stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit Instagram feeds” and repeated “bullshit” twice. Just wanted to check in, since it didn’t seem like a typical response to what I’d posted.

You 'genuinely' did nothing of the sort. You lazily used one of the more tedious of the MN cliches yourself to try to belittle the poster rather than write a rebuttle. Honestly, it's a fair cop, you'll get more respect if you own it.

Thanks for the clarification. I very rarely see it here

It's on here all the time. I find it mildly irritating and rather lazy to be honest.

Did you actually read my comment? It included a rebuttal: “Are you okay? I’m talking about here on Mumsnet. Sounds like you need to take your own advice.” So it wasn’t just a lazy response, as you suggest.

Also, believe it or not, there’s a life outside of Mumsnet. The phrase “are you okay?” has been around for ages and isn’t unique to this site. It’s something I’ve heard since I was younger. It seems like you might be taking this a bit too seriously, or maybe you’re just someone who’s terminally online.

The projection is strong with this one.

Reasons for it are:

  • No visible upvoting option
  • Sometimes someone else has said something so succinct that you don’t feel you could add more what they’ve articulated, so it’s the quickest way to share your view and lend your weight to the conversation
  • It’s an established way of contributing to most online forums, including outside of Mumsnet, so people use it as a part of the vernacular

For all those reasons, no it doesn’t annoy me.

I'm not taking it seriously at all. In fact I'm poking a little gentle fun at you for being so neatly hoist by your own petard. Many phrases are used outside of MN, doesn't stop them being in iver frequent use on here, hence becoming MN clichés. Other examples could include 'you sound very aggressive OP'. But I try to avoid them myself.

This! ThisThisThisThisThisThisTHIS.

On a serious note, I'd much rather they just type 'This' than read the exact same thing seventeen squillion times.

I would much rather people just wrote "this" than tried to reword the same thing over and over.

Wink

A visible "thanks" count would be better though.

Exactly. (Is “exactly” more acceptable than “this”?)
