hate when people say ‘this’?

TipsyLemonCritic · 04/11/2024 16:18

It’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I get that people use it to agree, but can’t they just say why they agree or add something to the conversation? ‘“this” feels lazy, like they can’t be bothered to type more than four characters. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I think it kills discussion. Anyone else find this annoying, or am I being petty?

This with bells on! 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Annoying!!!

🤭🤭🤭 op, it's just not a big enough deal tbh, sometimes you just agree completely with what someone has written

Pickandmixmood · 04/11/2024 17:23

I find it much more irritating to see hundreds of posts saying exactly the same thing. It is as if they don’t even read the previous posts

Rhaidimiddim · 04/11/2024 17:23

Devilsmommy · 04/11/2024 16:34

It's the shortest quickest way of agreeing with a post🤷 maybe they're not in the mood to type an essay that succinctly says I agree

This!
But not unless the word is followed by an exclamation mark (since we're talking petty prefrrences).

MorrisZapp · 04/11/2024 17:24

Is it preferable to 'couldn't have put it better myself'? Because that's exactly what it means. Why rehash the same points over and over when someone has kindly expressed it succinctly?

Bellatrixpure · 04/11/2024 17:24

cherrysodas · 04/11/2024 17:09

The phrase you used to another poster “are you okay?” Is much more irritating. It’s a way of implying she’s stupid which is very unpleasant.

nope,

TinyBlueHoe · 04/11/2024 17:24

Arlanymor · 04/11/2024 16:54

Reasons for it are:

  • No visible upvoting option
  • Sometimes someone else has said something so succinct that you don’t feel you could add more what they’ve articulated, so it’s the quickest way to share your view and lend your weight to the conversation
  • It’s an established way of contributing to most online forums, including outside of Mumsnet, so people use it as a part of the vernacular

For all those reasons, no it doesn’t annoy me.

This.

MorrisZapp · 04/11/2024 17:26

I'm far more riled by red flag expression creep. More red flags than a Communist rally etc, I'd be happy to see that one die a quiet death.

StarPaths · 04/11/2024 17:31

Everyone writing "for context" before the context is even more annoying.

cherrysodas · 04/11/2024 17:32

TipsyLemonCritic · 04/11/2024 17:15

No, l genuinely asked if she was okay because her response came across quite passionate and intense. She made assumptions about where I’m seeing these comments, saying “stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit Instagram feeds” and repeated “bullshit” twice. Just wanted to check in, since it didn’t seem like a typical response to what I’d posted.

Good I’m glad to hear it. Because it certainly came across as very sarcastic.

Stop scrolling through bullshit comments on bullshit instagram feeds then.

It’s on mumsnet a lot!

This comment was very aggressive in response to what @TipsyLemonCritic said.

I agree with OP, ‘this’ as a response is lazy and jumping on some bandwagon of other annoying ‘THISSERS’

If they have nothing to add, they can just press the thanks button and not say anything. We don't need threads clogged up with quotes and THIS over and over, just press the thanks buttons and don't post!

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/11/2024 17:57

It doesn't annoy me half as much as "first reply nailed it". or "someone will come on in a minute to say ..."

ForeverPombear · 04/11/2024 17:59

nocoolnamesleft · 04/11/2024 16:39

I think people use it on here because there is no visible upvote, just the only visible to the recipient thanks.

Exactly this.

cherrysodas · 04/11/2024 17:32

And you certainly come across as very condescending. It’s interesting that you’re quick to call me out for asking if a commenter is okay, yet you have nothing to say about her very aggressive comment in response to my post.

However "this boy/girl/furbaby" as a comment to a photo is annoying and pointless. Yeah what about them? Yes I know this boy/ girl is your beloved offspring (I hope the furbaby isn't Grin)

You could have an argument in an empty room.

This sort of disingenuous nonsense is considerably more annoying than ‘this’.

This.

SuspiciousAloysius · 04/11/2024 18:12

It’s a way to place mark without reiterating what’s already been said, so it doesn’t bother me. It usually means the person has actually read the thread.

^This!

I use 'this' often. If someone's already pretty much exactly said what I think, I'm not going to spend time writing up pretty much the same thing (unless I really want to)!

SabreIsMyFave · 04/11/2024 18:19

I would do that too.

SabreIsMyFave · 04/11/2024 18:20

Oooops wrong thread!
