To find it hilarious Labour claim to be the progressive party when they’ve only ever elected white men for leader

We now have the fourth elected (by the party) female Conservative leader. She is also the first black female leader and second person of colour.

Whereas the Labour Party have never voted in a woman or person of colour to be leader in their history. (Acting leader doesn’t count.) And yet people think they’re the more progressive party. I genuinely find it funny.

Well. It's strange to find it hilarious, but I suppose humour is subjective.
To me, it's less important what sex or background the leader has, than what values the party stands for, and is prepared to implement.

Exactly.

This is just another tedious Labour bashing thread. I don't care about the sex or ethnicity of public figures.

Well as the Labour party can’t define what a women is, or indeed what a working person is it’s no surprise is it really

They are too busy self identifying as Orwelian pigs, taking free clothes from Farmer Jones.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/11/2024 14:00

I don’t think it matters what the characteristics of the leader are, rather their actual policies!

How convenient

Why convenient? It's a point of view many people share.

The great thing about the Tory Party is that they change leaders so frequently that everyone gets a chance to be leader. I myself am booked in to take the top spot from 8th-10th January 2025.

🤭 Love it!

Wouldbedriver · 02/11/2024 14:02

I laughed ruefully at this on Twitter. Anyone who’s read anything about Kemi’s past performance in any job she’s ever had won’t be feeling optimistic about what she’ll be able to do as Conservative leader.

As a lifelong leftie, I agree this is an uncomfortable truth.

BooToYouHalloween · 02/11/2024 14:03

I do find the “whataboutism” on this thread fascinating rather than any willingness to engage with the actual point being made. If it were the other way round (Tories being the ones who’d never elected anyone but a white man as leader) Labour supporters would be crowing about it from the rooftops. Because it obviously reflects something within the party.

Well given that the Labour Party don’t know what a woman is, I suppose it’s unlikely that they would appoint one as a leader.

THIS.

iamtheblcksheep · 02/11/2024 14:05

As a conservative who has been called racist many times on here because I vote conservative, I find some of the responses on here from labour supporters hilarious.

Im glad Badenock won over Jenrick. I think she’ll have a firm hand.

True. It is great that Kemi has broken that glass ceiling, against many who likely underestimate her.

ClaudineMallory · 02/11/2024 14:06

"whataboutism"?.
Your entire point which followed was "what about if it was the other wat round..."
So. Whataboutism., @BooToYouHalloween

I am deeply left wing and would describe myself as progressive (more left and more progressive than current Labour).

I agree with OP @BooToYouHalloween that Labour have a significant issue with diversity in their "talent" pool. Why are they not developing and supporting candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds? Why has it taken so long for Labour to get women in to the top cabinet jobs, never mind the leader role? Looking at the way Diane Abbot was treated, I don't see how you can support progressive politics and not see that Labour has a really bad record on this. I'm really shocked so many posters are minimising the issue.

👏🏻 💯

I have never voted right wing.

But I don’t see how anyone can pretend that Labour doesn’t need to take a long hard look in the mirror and get to grips with why they only elect white male leaders.

It is a problem.

And the Tory’s poor record for improving life for women and diverse communities generally isn’t a get out of jail free card for Labour re this.

Charlottejbt · 02/11/2024 14:07

Labour have had a Jewish leader in recent times (Ed Miliband) who beat another Jewish man to the top job. All of which had to be erased by the Tory press to push the "Labour are antisemitic" narrative. In fact I think even Sir Keir is Jewish by marriage/conversion. Yep, what a bunch of antisemites.

Hilarious?
Again, humour is subjective I suppose. We shall see what Kemi Badenoch does as a leader, and judge her on that.

OneAmberFinch · 02/11/2024 14:08

I'm a Conservative party member and I've got time for Kemi Badenoch but I really dislike this idea that circulates (even within conservative groups) that it's somehow improper or unseemly or a "bad look" for a white man to be head of a political party in Britain. Kemi is at her best when railing against this kind of identity politics so it annoys me when even her supporters spout this line.

M0ssGreen · 02/11/2024 14:09

Well considering the Tories have just voted in a leader who has made it very clear how ableist she is, ignorant re what is autism and begrudges Sen children having support to go to school I’d say they are clearly have no moral high ground.

Hoardasurass · 02/11/2024 14:09

HecatesBees · 02/11/2024 12:59

Totally agree, I mean when did the labour party last have a man as bad as Liz Truss?

Jeremy Corban

Hoardasurass · 02/11/2024 14:09

Jeremy Corban

Corbyn. Fortunately, never became Prime Minister.

M0ssGreen · 02/11/2024 14:11

She’s shockingly awful and they’ve massively shot themselves in their own foot voting her in so there is a small positive.

I guess we should ignore the fact we have a female labour chancellor.🙄

100% agree on this about Kemi.

The problem is, neither does Labour particularly about autistic children, either. They refuse to define their plan for SEND reform.

Charlottejbt · 02/11/2024 14:11

@AnonyMouse80 Very true about Diane Abbott being poorly treated - although she was the first female MP of colour. I think her misfortune was to be a left winger under a right wing leadership rather than to be a POC though.

I bet once she's dead everyone will be paying tribute and saying how loved she was, conveniently forgetting how they hated and pilloried her during her lifetime. It was the same for Michael Foot.

She's shocking awful too sadly.

Wolfpa · 02/11/2024 14:13

The last two female leaders of the Conservative Party have put women in leadership roles back by decades. Let’s hope that they have chosen better with this one and don’t feel the need for a sacrifice any time soon.

mitogoshigg · 02/11/2024 14:14

It should be about who is best for the job because they have the skills needed, sex nor ethnicity comes into it.
