I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

People on here seem to complain of fireworks a lot. Ive only heard them here around bonfire night & Diwali. They often fall close together so there's usually only a couple of weekends.

I don't think anyone locally is setting off their own. There are organised displays in each of the two nearest towns and people go to those.

Another one who needs to step out of their bubble and realise that the experience of others differs from theirs.

I can't understand the trouble with pets and fireworks either. We have a sausage dog who is just 1, so last night was his first time hearing fireworks. We tucked him up inside with my DB's 2 dogs and some music on and they were totally fine. I have never had a dog who had any issue with fireworks. If they are scared can't you just cuddle them up and put the tv on? It passes very quickly.

My friend's dog has a thunder jacket but has always been really distressed by fireworks.

What is a thunder jacket? It sounds epic!

I have no words, maybe part of the reason is attitudes and awareness has changed and moved forward ?

My child has disabilities he is not just a frightened kid, can't imagine having such a selfish one way attitude to life and those around me.

FasterFa · 01/11/2024 18:54

I like them. We lit some for Diwali today. Good fun with the family.

I'd have no problem as life is full of noise. Loud motorbikes and boy racer cars are increasingly making pops and bangs.

My grandad and his generation fully experienced the second world war and we went as kids to many displays in the 80s and 90s. Nobody was crying about veterans or shaking dogs or frightened kids back then. It's a modern affliction to complain about everything.

So no one was distressed then? Fireworks are a lot louder than they used to be, and their use over several days and weeks is a phenomenon that wasn't so widespread years ago.

You cant just ban a whole industry and people's enjoyment just because a tiny minority of people are stressed by noise. And as above, WW2 veterans didn't cry about them!

I expect she calls people snowflakes too.

What a limited view you have.

littleHen84 · 01/11/2024 18:58

Didn't suggest a ban just a restriction, possibly back to something that resembled the 90s as you mentioned where it was only on bonfire night nye or festivals such as Divali not from Oct through to Jan, and public displays only, might take some pressure of the nhs around this time with injury's also.

My dogs are ok with fireworks but a previous dog was petrified of them despite following all advice. I also work in a rescue and lots of the dogs are frightened of them. Just because your dog is ok doesn’t mean all other animals are. Open your mind.

On the contrary, in 1997 a load of "antisocial fireworks" were banned, to stop kids setting them off and terrorising neighbourhoods.

Mini-rockets, bangers, firecrackers, fireworks of erratic flight (including jumping fireworks) were banned in 1997. In 2004 the definition of mini-rocket was further restricted, and airbombs were also banned, in an effort to stop anti-social behaviour involving fireworks.

TheBestBear · 01/11/2024 19:00

I think they should be limited to public displays only. I would prefer low noise as well, I'm not sure how a ridiculous loud bang like living in a war-zone is 'fun'.

Even as a kid I hated them. Loved looking at the pretty colours but the bangs petrified me so I'd end up petrified for 20 mins. I don't know why I never told my parents I didn't want to go as I was scared though 😅

littleHen84 · 01/11/2024 19:01

Ilovesooty most probably.

I wish we lived in a kinder thoughtful society why should animals and people suffer because some like to watch something go bang in the sky? Even as a small child I could take no enjoyment from it if I thought something or someone was suffering* *

I mean organised displays - to avoid any confusion.

@TheDogsPaws I am sorry to hear that any animal is scared of fireworks but this can be mitigated by doing the right things and ultimately they are animals, if they have to be scared for 10 minutes then so be it.

Lots of pet owners nowadays don't seem to even try and train their dogs, they are treated like babies and it creates a lot of problems.

What about the use of fireworks over a period of weeks? They've been going off near me on and off since early October, often till the early hours of the morning.

ScarletWitchM · 01/11/2024 19:04

my opinion is probably controversial but I don’t think that fireworks should be sold to the public at all. I know a lot of authorities have stopped firework displays recently, but they are still available in many places.
If fireworks must be sold to the public then people should have to get a licence to buy them from licenced suppliers and have to do a course (online) to understand how to use them responsibly.
but in general, people don’t need fireworks at all

strangerontheinternet · 01/11/2024 19:04

I like fireworks and I like the noise too I’m not in favour of silent ones. But I think we should ban the sale to the general public. Organised events and displays only and with licences for displays.
wedding venues that want to use them on the weekly could have a venue licence then if people with pets choose to live beside those then that’s up to them. Still require an external company with a licence to come in and do the display.
no need for Joe bloggs to be doing his own bonfire and display in their 10ft x 10ft back garden!!

They should be used within the law, which is up to 11pm apart from on exceptions like bonfire night at NYE.

In theory people could set them off every day of the year up to that time. It'll only be a few here and there. Its not like a machine gun going off non stop. It's not a crime!

Jesus Christ this thread is quite depressing! As a Veterinary Nurse I can assure you that sometimes regardless of trying and techniques to help the animal cope sometimes it doesn't work, it doesn't make somebody a bad owner just that that animal is scared if that particular thing. "If it has to be scared for 10 mins so be it", bloody hell have you ever seen a dog scared with fireworks it's not a fleeting thing where they consciously think oh loud bang done back to being ok, they shake pant dig pace for hours sometimes, even the smell of fire on non bonfire days would frighten my old dog on association that a firework might happen.

BusyCaz · 01/11/2024 19:06

I love the pretty ones, can't see the point in the ones that just make a bang.

No it can’t always be mitigated and it’s not just 10 minutes. Out old dog and lots at our rescue are affected for days after the fireworks. They’re nervous, don’t eat etc, and fireworks seem to be on and off from October to January here. It’s wildlife too.
