To ask your views on fireworks?

I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

It's fair to worry about the wild animals being terrified and that does concern me. My dad did some great fireworks displays when I was younger but I would never light my own, just in case.

I adore going to or seeing fireworks displays. They fill me with such joy. I don't mind when the neighbours let them off and my dog couldn't care less. None of my dogs have been bothered so maybe my view is skewed but I can't stand when people moan about their dogs being scared of them - you knew dogs were scared of them when you bought the dog. Why expect the world to change for you? Similar to buying next to a pub and being surprised there are drunk people talking loudly in the beer garden. Annoying but expected.

It's not just wild animals being terrified. They can actually die from the stress. Birds & bees that have very sensitive balance & hearing systems have these destroyed by the bangs leaving them disorientated and unable to navigate - they then slowly die.

It’s not just dogs though, is it? It’s horses, livestock, wild animals….

I am sick of selfish entitled people who don’t have any empathy for animals. It’s actually disgusting that so many people exist who don’t give a dam about any species other than their own. A dog died locally a few nights ago due to fireworks. Somebody’s beloved pet. But you wouldn’t care about that, would you? Because your brain needs sparkly lights and bangs for entertainment.

I completely agree. Well said.

Nogaxeh · 01/11/2024 15:39

Fireworks are illegal in the Republic of Ireland. I don't miss them, but given the numbers of people who would do their own fireworks in the back garden back in Britain, it's clear a lot of people enjoy them and generally speaking I'm not in favour of spoiling people's fun by banning things.

The only thing is that the larger fireworks at a professional display are really much more impressive. The ones you can buy in the shops are a bit wimpy and lacklustre in comparison

Ive never understood why people think fireworks are such an issue, those calling for only a handful of days, where do you live that fireworks happen more than that now? Every year this threads pop up the same week in November - the only week all year when there's noticeable fireworks, NYE notwithstanding. Seriously stop whinging and think about people in warzones listening to the sound of terrifying rockets every night.

Theres basically ONE week, maybe 8-9 days, in November when they happen a lot. Depending on the dates of Diwali and Bonfire Night, they are spread out a bit.

They are a traditional part of celebrating these events and if you can't cope with a few fireworks a handful of nights in November you must be such a misery guts!

You’ve inadvertently hit the nail on the head. There are many refugees from war zones here who probably suffer ptsd when they hear the noise of fireworks. Personally I hate them because I see how much my dog suffers. I’d like to see the noisy ones banned and only the silent ones used for displays.

Miley1967 · 01/11/2024 15:49

I currently detest them but this is mainly due to my dog being in a constant state of terror for days now and probably for days to come. Last night we even drove into the countryside and sat in the dark for two hours to give him a break. I have lost one dog this year to heart failure and am so worried about losing my other . he has had some stronger sedation this year. We area of Leicester where Divali fireworks are still going off at 2am. It is dreadful.
Agree they should be designated days only and these mortar bomb types should be banned. from previous years experience these will go on now for weeks. I have no problem with people enjoying them for a few days a year.

FloralGums · 01/11/2024 15:50

I love fireworks, they bring people such excitement and joy.
I think I would have more sympathy for dog owners if they showed some consideration for others but the fact is, near me anyway, they don’t care about their dog being distressed and barking all day long anyway. They also don’t care about the distress their dog causes humans.

tinytemper66 · 01/11/2024 15:51

Too loud. Love the colours though but don't like the noise.

username7891 · 01/11/2024 15:55

I love fireworks. My local park used to have a spectacular firework display every year for free. It's been cancelled since COVID which is devastating as I used to love it.

EllaPaella · 01/11/2024 15:58

I love a good fireworks display and have no objections to people letting some off in their gardens but I do agree it would be better if it was only the 5th November and NYE.

Grmumpy · 01/11/2024 15:58

I would prefer organised licensed displays and a limit per year. They are bad for the environment and even at displays are occasionally dangerous.

WorkCleanRepeat · 01/11/2024 08:27

I love them. They are very dangerous though and I'd prefer they were not sold to the general public. I'd stick with organised displays only.

I don't think this is true anymore though with the modern fireworks. You don't buy the individual ones anymore that you had to light and then run away when they fell over and fired at you!

You buy a big "cake" of fireworks, or look a bit like a box, then you simply light one corner and you get a whole 5 minute display and no need to go back to again. Plus a few rockets of course.

The safety has really improved and of you are sensible at home, it is great fun imo.

midgetastic · 01/11/2024 16:00

I'd prefer quiet only ones

LoobyDoop2 · 01/11/2024 16:13

I love them, but the misery they cause for animals overrides that and I’d support a ban on private sales and use.

CurlewKate · 01/11/2024 18:31

I absolutely adore fireworks. But I would be delighted to support a total ban.

V0xPopuli · 01/11/2024 18:35

People on here seem to complain of fireworks a lot. Ive only heard them here around bonfire night & Diwali. They often fall close together so there's usually only a couple of weekends.

I don't think anyone locally is setting off their own. There are organised displays in each of the two nearest towns and people go to those.

RichardOsmansFreakishlyBigHand · 01/11/2024 18:39

Love them. The louder the better.

If it wasnt for facebook groups people wouldnt be so obsessed with them.

The hysteria on my local one is crazy, with seemingly intelligent people calling for a ban on our town, as id its different to any other town in UK!

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/11/2024 18:40

Organised displays only, and they should be the silent ones. Hate the bloody things, they really upset my pets.

littleHen84 · 01/11/2024 18:42

I understand why people love Fireworks and Bonfire night, but having a child with ASD who is petrified of the noise and won't sleep for days means for me I think they should be restricted. I often imagine people oohing and aahing at the display whilst I'm trying to console my petrified child clinging to me and explain to him in a way he can understand what the noise is.

dixon86 · 01/11/2024 18:42

They should be silent

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 01/11/2024 18:43

Love watching them and trying to take photos of them. Going to the local show on bonfire night. Might stand in my garden with my camera tomorrow night and get some shots of nearby ones.

Why would you want them louder when animals and some humans are scared, could you look a war veteran or someone who suffers like my child does in the eye knowing how much distress it causes.

redkite27 · 01/11/2024 18:44

I can't understand the trouble with pets and fireworks either. We have a sausage dog who is just 1, so last night was his first time hearing fireworks. We tucked him up inside with my DB's 2 dogs and some music on and they were totally fine. I have never had a dog who had any issue with fireworks. If they are scared can't you just cuddle them up and put the tv on? It passes very quickly.

I am so sorry to hear this. Totally understandable that you don't like them and clearly a different league of concern, compared to those who complain about them because of their dogs and cats.

I'd have no problem as life is full of noise. Loud motorbikes and boy racer cars are increasingly making pops and bangs.

My grandad and his generation fully experienced the second world war and we went as kids to many displays in the 80s and 90s. Nobody was crying about veterans or shaking dogs or frightened kids back then. It's a modern affliction to complain about everything.
