Cropped photo of their face for privacy

How is this safe?!

How is it even an option to be able to do this?

Aibu to say these screens are way too distracting?

I thought that was the big navigation screen?

Funkyslippers · 31/10/2024 17:33

I'm pretty sure this would be seen as the same as using your phone whilst driving by the police

Hoppinggreen · 31/10/2024 17:34

I have a Tesla and I am pretty sure thats not possible.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 31/10/2024 17:34

How do you know it wasn't reading the book aloud?

I'm sure if they were using the screen beyond checking the satnav they run the risk of being pulled over like someone on their phone

HalloweenHaribo · 31/10/2024 17:35

Audio book?

Bjorkdidit · 31/10/2024 17:35

How is this even a question? Of course it's not safe.

KrisAkabusi · 31/10/2024 17:35

Its either a shopped photo or a stationary car. It's not possible to run apps like that while moving.

ZiaMcnab · 31/10/2024 17:35

That is crazy! Are you sure it's a book, not something else? I can't think what it could be that wouldn't be distracting & dangerous, but reading while driving would be unbelievably dangerous! I get so distracted when I'm reading (on the sofa or in bed only!) that I sometimes don't even hear people talking to me, I can't see how anyone could concentrate anywhere close to enough on driving if they're trying to read too.

It's clearly photoshopped, look at her fingers!

RedFronds · 31/10/2024 17:38

I've got a Tesla and I'd live to get rid of the part that shows the cartoon cars and people but you can't.

You can't watch Netflix when you are driving so I doubt you can read a book either.

avaritablevampire · 31/10/2024 17:41

Well if I had fingers which were that purple I'd be very concerned about my circulation (I get the nails are nail polish) but look at the hand both on the screen and on the wheel.
Also looks like they have arthritis or a very painful hand condition looking at the way the hand and fingers are touching the device.
The more I look at the photo the more it looks like a Halloween spoof!

KizzyDora · 31/10/2024 17:44

Weird hand

lifeturnsonadime · 31/10/2024 17:45

Isn't that a passenger in the passenger seat holding the kindle just in front of the Sat Nav?

i don't think this is a driver reading a kindle. Absolutely no reason to , audio books are available.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 31/10/2024 17:46

Congratulations OP. This is without doubt the stupidest thread of the day.

"Cropped for privacy" Grin Grin What nonsense.

JubileeJuice · 31/10/2024 17:46

You can't do this when the car is moving. You can only access navigation, radio etc.

MiriamMay · 31/10/2024 17:50

Even if this was true, the person taking the photo would have to have done so whilst driving themselves.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 31/10/2024 17:55

You can bring up the full manual on my car’s screen so it could be that, although this is clearly badly photoshopped

Serencwtch · 31/10/2024 18:03

DH has a Tesla & doesn't think it's possible.

If it is & you have genuine recent evidence from a dash cam or helmet cam etc then submit footage to nextbase dashcam portal. It will be reviewed by police & followed up as appropriate (warning letter, penalty notice etc). It's illegal and penalty is 6 points & £200 fine

If you've just seen it on Facebook etc it's prob photoshopped to shit stir so if that's the case scroll on.

Blueberrymuffino · 31/10/2024 18:05

I can assure you this photo is not photoshopped. Not sure how I can prove that but take it face value it hasn't been edited bar cropping the ladies face out. Here is another photo.. we were joining another lane (the lane she was in) and in a bit of traffic but the engine was running, and the car was moving.

I can't say for sure it was a book but big blocks of text and she was using her fingers to scroll as you would like a book.

She was not concentrating at all, I was surprised that the tesla even allowed that whilst driving? I don't have a tesla myself so I'm not sure what it could have been, but it defo wasn't a map!

I should have also said I was a passenger at the back of the car, otherwise that would be very hypocritical of me.

I promise no photoshop, maybe blurry because we were also moving.

We do have a dash cam, good point, I will have a look if it would have caught it on there. The car would have been on there as we ended up behind them, but I don't think it would have caught her scrolling on the screen with the angle we have the camera facing forward.

I don't really understand the point of this thread OP?

And don't say, 'I just wanted to know if I'm being unreasonable to think it's unsafe?'

Because unless you're under the age of 3, you'll know it's not safe while driving? 😳

Flossflower · 31/10/2024 18:18

I have seen many examples of this. A London black cab with 2 cradles. In 1 cradle was a phone with BBC news playing. We were in the next lane. I have seen people reading map. I have also seen a teacher( I assume) marking a pile of books while driving.

MiriamMay · 31/10/2024 18:19

I don’t understand it either.

It’s completely unnecessary and misleading given you can’t read a book on a Tesla screen.

I wonder what the OP’s motive is

ShamblesRock · 31/10/2024 18:29

I have just had a new car with an infotainment screen. I find it bizarre that I can do a lot of my phone functions, that would be illegal to do on my actual phone.

coxesorangepippin · 31/10/2024 18:31

Just like filing your nails in a gas car isn't safe??
