Cropped photo of their face for privacy

How is this safe?!

How is it even an option to be able to do this?

Aibu to say these screens are way too distracting?

How can the driver read a book when they have no head?

cinammonfishsticks · 31/10/2024 18:33

You can't use apps like that while driving. It's probably terms and conditions she's scrolled down quickly to accept.

KrisAkabusi · 31/10/2024 17:35

Its either a shopped photo or a stationary car. It's not possible to run apps like that while moving.

Wrong.

You can run the web browser while driving.

DH has a Tesla & doesn't think it's possible.

If it is & you have genuine recent evidence from a dash cam or helmet cam etc then submit footage to nextbase dashcam portal. It will be reviewed by police & followed up as appropriate (warning letter, penalty notice etc). It's illegal and penalty is 6 points & £200 fine

If you've just seen it on Facebook etc it's prob photoshopped to shit stir so if that's the case scroll on.

He's wrong.

You absolutely can browse the Internet on the Web browser while the car is moving.

It's not even a book. Looks like a menu with a list of options. Could be photoshopped.

cinammonfishsticks · 31/10/2024 18:37

And no, still not the safest but no different to someone fiddling with google maps while driving

Hoppinggreen · 31/10/2024 18:38

Wrong.

Can you?
I know I can't watch Netflix unless I am stationary in N with the brakes on so I am pretty sure you can't do anything similar

Iamthemoom · 31/10/2024 18:39

It could be speechify reading a book or pdf.

saveforthat · 31/10/2024 18:41

I don't know about Teslas but on my very average car, if I link my phone to my car, emails pop up asking if I want to answer them. I always thought that was stupid. Could it be an email?

When my phone is synced with my Tesla no emails, texts etc appear on the screen

You can get texts, but not app alerts like whatapp or Facebook messenger, there's an option to sync messages that needs enabling.

I have just had a new car with an infotainment screen. I find it bizarre that I can do a lot of my phone functions, that would be illegal to do on my actual phone.

It is illegal to use the screen when driving, you aren’t supposed to change music or use sat nav etc using the touch screen while driving. You need to set it going before setting off

Blueberrymuffino · 31/10/2024 19:19

I don't have a motive, I was a passenger scrolling on MN and looked up and saw what I thought was a book on the screen, or a large block of text. I was surprised that a tesla would have such an unsafe entertainment screen and thought I would post to see if this was usual with this type of car, and plus when I usually post I get some answers that would be a possible explanation. Also therapeutic to share my surprise.. but maybe I shouldn't admit that ha.

So sounds like it wouldn't have been a book (sorry if I mislead) but possibly an article accessed through the Internet Explorer? It didn't seem like a quick read of terms and conditions she was scrolling too long I think!

No face on the photo because I've edited it out. Why would I be cruel to show a face that could identify her?

It is not illegal to use your infotainment system in the UK.

https://www.cinch.co.uk/guides/ask-the-experts/device-driving-laws

That doesn't say anything about reading digital books while you drive. I strongly suspect it would be at a minimum "driving without due care and attention", possibly straight-up dangerous driving.

It was in regard to the pp who stated it was illegal to use the infotainment system at all whilst driving.

Edingril · 31/10/2024 19:51

It's perfectly safe, and they teach to do it lessons and for test

Do you really think anyone thinks it is safe by your question?

Almostneverunreasonable · 31/10/2024 19:52

It looks like the car’s instruction manual to me.

Motnight · 31/10/2024 19:53

Photoshop fail unless the driver is an alien!

icecreamsundaeno5 · 31/10/2024 19:59

If you google 'Tesla driver reading a book while driving' you get a surprising number of photos and articles, going back quite a few years. No idea if they're all genuine or not but some do appear to be!

FixTheBone · 01/11/2024 11:14

Just to answer this difinitively - this is me (at 2 mph on a private driveway) this morning in a model Y, with BBC news open in the browser.
