It's 3pm and already we've had people trick n treating. I've now brought pumpkins inside until 5ish. Anyone else?

Maybe take the hammer off the door then?

Again it’s once a year. Either put some earplugs in or why don’t you just go out for a couple of hours if all of these “hammering” 4 yr olds really disturb you that much.

I’m sure a local pub could be persuaded to host a “joyless gits” evening. Then again you’d probably all sit around looking for something to complain about nursing a glass of tepid water.

They aren't 4. Yours might be 4. These are older kids.

What time is ok for trick or treating? I would have taken my 5 year old at 5.30 but his dad is coming, so it'll be more like 6.30. I assume 6.30-7.30 is ok?

Yeah fine I think 8pm is usually the cut off for most maybe 8.30 at a push

As I said before. Some of us have anxiety. Some of us have PTSD. Some of us feel vulnerable. Be kind.

Any time between 5ish and 8ish seems standard.

Yep agreed! Although today the majority have come between 5-5.30 and not a soul since then!

VeilFlowyLace · 31/10/2024 17:58

Very small village and no one yet. I have lights out, pumpkins lit and outside ( battery powered candles)

pestowithwalnuts · 31/10/2024 17:58

Saw some at 4 ish. This was on a main riady

GoldMoon · 31/10/2024 17:59

We are the equivalent of 'bah humbug ' when it comes to Halloween . We don't usually draw our downstairs curtains but they are today & won't open the door if anyone knocks .

Noodlehen · 31/10/2024 18:00

I have a bucket of mini bags of sweets and nobody has knocked yet.
Looks like ill have to eat them myself 😉

to be fair, we live in an area that has a lot of Asians, I don’t think a lot of them celebrate. And it’s also Diwali so they will have their own things going on but I thought we may get a couple.

Genuine question- why don’t you just pop out for a couple of hours? No one wants to cause anyone any suffering but honestly, it’s not like Halloween comes as a surprise every year.

And I have explained to you that I give plenty…but no that’s not good enough. You’re too miserable to even accept that!

Stop name calling.

Differentstarts · 31/10/2024 18:01

Right iv got a little witch and a spider fairy all excited and ready to hit the streets. Hoping for some nice treats. Have a happy Halloween everyone 🎃 🧙‍♀️ 🪄 🧹 🍬 🍫 🍭

Hippiechick162 · 31/10/2024 18:02

I love Halloween! Love seeing all the little excited faces...we've even had a few party tricks already (they get extra treats). Our street goes all out. My kiddos go out after tea. It's usually all done by 8
Edited to add
Happy Halloween 🎃

No one should have to leave their house because other people think their kids are entitled to knock on doors.

VeilFlowyLace · 31/10/2024 18:02

In our old house, some years ago we were deluged !! Thousands of children came.

Hurrah, just been visited by all sorts of witches demons and goblins 😈

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 16:51

I think it was if you like the countryside and farmers then you have to put up with their kids hammering on your door demanding sweets

👍

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 31/10/2024 18:04

I've already had about 40-50 kids through, all very polite and dressed up for the evening.

I think it's nice. Much prefer seeing and interacting with children enjoying themselves and being sweet then a lot of other poor behaviour that's frequently seen around here.

If trick or treaters start coming at 3pm (thankfully not where I live, but clearly happens where the OP lives) and you WFH, going out for a couple of hours isn't going to be an option.

This is why trick or treating people's house during normal working hours is pretty thoughtless. I don't blame the kids, but it's really thoughtless behaviour by their parents.

(And I also agree with the PP who said nobody should have to go out because other people feel entitled to knock on their door.)

Auburngal · 31/10/2024 18:06

Is it half term where you are? Obviously parents taking advantage, but some people may not decorated their homes, sorted out the sweets etc. yet.

I would be worried if kids were doing ToT'ing at that time here as half term was last week here and schools finish 3:15pm.

Fartooold · 31/10/2024 18:09

I'm still waiting😟
Candles in porch window, Dec's up to welcome them, I'm dressed to scare and have a cauldron full of crap.
I'm usually sold out by this time of day, but nothing this year.
Am sad 😔

I’m not saying they have to, but to me it would seem sensible to consider it, if people genuinely find a couple of hours of door knocking and silly costumes traumatic. Especially given that no one is going to stop trick and treating and it seems like kids in @purplebeansprouts area don’t seem to follow the conventions that most kids do (no decorations= don’t knock etc).

Fumblebug · 31/10/2024 18:09

It’s half term where we live, so the timings seem more spread out than when Halloween is on a school day and all the kids come out later. We’ve had a few arrive around 4pm rather than after 5 when it’s dark. There are a lot of families with young kids round here but also a lot of older couples whose kids moved out years ago. The etiquette has been only to trick or treat at the houses with pumpkins and decorations outside, and if there are sweets outside the door to take what you want and not knock. Seems to have worked well for quite a few years.

Superhansrantowindsor · 31/10/2024 18:10

People need a bit of empathy. Where I live it’s cute primary school kids out with a parent or guardian. Where I used to live it was older teens banging on the door, the window, throwing eggs at the house, screaming through the letterbox regardless of whether you had a pumpkin or not. Halloween is vile in some errors and really scary.

usernother · 31/10/2024 18:10

OP has a dog training issue, not a children knocking too early problem.
